So, a couple weeks ago I commented about having a ludicrously poor framerate despite having done all the tricks already. Finally found the solution thanks to a reply on my Steam thread on the subject. I went into the launcher options and forced the game to launch with DX9 instead of 11 or 12. I instantly went from 3-8 FPS to 60 FPS. I forget the exact command, but it should be easy enough to search for.

The FPS Booster option "lower framerate when app loses focus" seems to be directly tied to your cinematic cameras as well. so although it is intended to be lowered while you tab away I actually leave it at 60fps so that i can get smooth cinemas.

It is not tied to cinematic camera to my knowledge. It only affects when you “tab out”.

BIG agree with page file when talking about RAM. Even with a VERY modest list of mods (Mostly a single pack of roads and the "standard" suite of mods), I used al 16 gigs of RAM at about 80k population in my most recent city. On a hard drive, using the page file as much as cities would need to when exceeding the limit will CRIPPLE your game to a near unplayable framerate, with stutter and lag galore. It's borderline impossible to play. On a SSD, it's a much better experience, but it's going to rip through the lifespan of your drive and is VERY unrecommended for long-term use. Really, he is telling the truth when he says that you either need to trim your mods or upgrade your RAM. It's unfortunate but there's no way around it

I have a mid range desktop gaming PC with a Nvidia 2060 super. No issues there. I upgraded from 16 MB to 32 MB of ram and noticed a significant difference in game performance. I also feel that I could move up to 64 and might not use that but would improve the overall gameplay.It still takes an eternity to load the game initially but once in game I don’t have any issues with FPS unless there was something that didn’t load properly. This is a great video but I think it proves that a new version of the game is necessary So that more people can enjoy the Modded game. If I was on Consol or didn’t have a PC that could handle any mods I would be pretty disappointed to play the vanilla game when you see all the customization that can be done to this game.

Great tips! Another thing that affects frame rates is where you point the camera. Point it away from high activity in your city (like the more rural areas) and watch the frames increase. Point to your downtown and it will decrease. When I want to see the best frame rates I find the best compromise in camera position.

9:29 How much fps do you get from using the FPS Booster? I've seen some comments on FPS Booster steam workshop saying that the mod improves twice as many fps before. Personally, I use the mod but I didn't get that much of fps boost probably just around 15-20% of increase (In my case, Visibility Control LOD settings affect more performance). Also, the game (after the mod) does not seem to utilize 99% of all the gpu anymore (usually around 60-70%~) causing it to averaging around 35fps~ when completely new map/saves instead 50fps~ when vanilla (the 99% GPU Utilizations is only when the camera pointed, located, or zoom out away from the crowded cities). Do you have any thoughts on this?

Even with these mods I still get less than 20 fps downtown. My system is older (i7-6850k oc'd, gtx 1070 oc'd, 32gb ram xmp) but at this point I think my game is slow as the main world thread is doing to much. My gpu just sits there at maybe 50% load which is a sign that the cpu can't feed it fast enough, even at 4.5ghz. This game has terrible optimization XD

Good advices when it comes to improving performance. As a curiosity LOD objects are often combined and rendered as one object which greatly improves performance. Unfortunately it has some drawbacks, like e.g. all objects needs to use one texture, so game needs to create big texture atlas with textures of all LOD objects. If game can't fit all textures in full res in the atlas, all will be downscaled. With regards to 11:20, increasing fps at loading screen might significantly speed up loading process because some parts of loading process are divided into chunks and processed each frame, so more frames per second, less time spend on those type of tasks. Some of the mods also spread their work across multiple frames to not block loading other things. If you are waiting 2-3 min to load savegame probably won't see much difference, but if you love assets and PO the difference might be even 30-40% of loading time. I'll add a note about that in the upcoming update ;)

A few more: Bypass Paradox Loader - Not an actual mod but a reconfiguration to load directly into the game. Less Steam - Suppresses calls to Steam for faster loading. Load Order Mod removes the advertising panels on the title screen but I'm not sure if it removes the actual calls. Skip Intro - Save a few more seconds while loading. Stacking the above together along with Loading Screen Mod significantly reduces the time it takes to get into the game. Instant Return to Desktop - Save time while quitting. Monitor It! - Doesn't cover everything but is a convenient in-game performance panel with utilization figures. Dynamic Resolution - Ostensibly for increasing detail via supersampling but can be used to decrease as well. Useful for potato PCs. Transfer Broker - Moves traffic AI to its own two threads. Helpful to squeeze a little more utilization out of higher thread count CPUs.

I watched this after experiencing major lag when I hit 65k population (metropolis milestone). I only have a few mods...81 tiles, move it, TMPE, and a few vehicle assets. I tried these mods and your advice and nothing worked. 3x speed was like 1x speed, terraforming was a joke in some spots. I pushed through after reading up on this issue and seeing most people talking about it being the game and not optimized. I didn't notice any difference in performance after trying out these mods and settings so I turned them off. I hit 80k population and the final milestone. It was literally like a switch. Same as when I hit 65k, everything went to shit. Then hit the final milestone and it was back to normal. 3x speed, terraforming, like nothing ever happened.

I don't have the best computer speed wise, it's not a gaming setup. I changed my gameplay settings from high to medium resolution to help with my frame rate. My current city is using the realistic population mod and I have a great transit system. My traffic is at about 78%, I have a population of 330,000 and 6% unemployment. The fps seems to be quite good and smooth scrolling, I only get the odd slow down or stoppage when it does a save which is around 5 seconds. If I was to change back to the High settings I know it wouldn't even load as I get the cities.exe is not responding notice. I try not to have to many mods running but I have enough to enjoy the game.
@JPEaglesandKatz Жыл бұрын
Just another thing just in case anyone is watching this in late 2023. What people forget is that capping your fps or reducing it from say 100+ to 30 or 60 fps is possibly a major, major power saving on your energy bill.. Overhere in my country electricity and gas is so expensive now.... Like truly silly (especially compared to the US prices)... If you shave of 40 frames a second... In a months time that could save you 30 euros a month... Another thing if you have an overly powerful system with say a 4090 or something and the game itself is actually bottlenecking you at a pretty low framerate... Make sure to power limit your GPU itself so it doesn't still go full power usage even though it only spits out half the frames. Again, major, major power usage and cost saver.

5:12 - You need to be corrected on that statement. The orange assets being listed as being missing is caused by the fact that you are loading a MAP from a creator that also had a list of assets in his/her inventory. Now probably when that person made the map 95% of the assets he or she uses were NOT used in creating the map. But when the map is saved it somehow reminds the presence of those assets. In other words, you would not even need them. Can anybody tell me here, who loaded a freshly loaded map from the Steam Workshop, added all the components listed also to the right, that after loading some elements were missing????? Despite seeing a lot of assets missing in the loading screen mod? They will not. So trying t o read that report and try also to add all those assets manually is completely nonsense and not needed. Only when items are red, then you should look at it, but orange items can be ignored.
@YUMBL3 жыл бұрын
If you make a save and then unsubscribe from an asset that is used it will appear as orange because it is missing. I’m not talking about map creators. I’m talking about the person not having an asset that they put in a map.

I use to play SimCity 2000, great game... Guess I will give a try to this one in 2025 if they even release some new version that help around multi-core performance. I wouldn't bother playing if big cities are so much a problem, I love complex things and this game seem to struggle a lot on this old engine at end-game. I actually think you have building LODs turned a little too high. You'll notice that when you're zoomed out, all the little windows and details look kind of nasty, with jagged edges and such; that's because there's just physically not enough pixels in your screen to squeeze together all that detail. The next level of LOD uses lower resolution textures and models, which means all those details become a bit less... detailed, which looks better at a distance. So LOD has a secondary purpose as well, it's not purely for performance. Of course this is all down to personal preference in the end, and it also depends on like, the resolution of your monitor and such; there are also other things you can do to make the visuals look better, like anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering.

Wonder why the simulation has no optimization whatsoever. I'm sure there are aspects which could be further simplified or follow a more hierarchical structure to reduce the amount of calculations the CPU needs to perform per clock cycle especially if it's not pertinent to the gameplay or analyzing of the simulation data. It would also help with reducing the amount of RAM required to run the system. I'm sure the traffic simulation could be significantly optimized by not having to keep track of all realtime agents everywhere on the map and just instead rely on general traffic density routing data and compare it with the effective capacity of the road to estimate traffic congestion. This could be triggered based on the FOV distance and camera location. I'm sure it could also make it much easier to have more 'active realtime agents' whenever the camera is within an adequate FOV distance of a location that you could have hundreds if not thousands of simulation agents within view of the camera and not utterly decimate your CPU, GPU and RAM utilization and would give so much more life to the city without really breaking any immersion because really it doesn't take much to depict lots of activity if your smart with where specifically it's implemented and how smooth the transition is.

I have followed your advice on several of your videos and it has assisted greatly - thank you!!. Although loading time and FPS have greatly improved for some reason it takes me ages to open my landscaping tab, if I select trees via the find it mood I have no issues?? Any advice from your side?? Thanx for awesome content!!

Could be for older or les core CPUs I noticed my gpu and cpu had a problem with not doing anny thing in the game.. Cpu 25 % 8 cores, gpu rtx 3070 8gb using 97 - 99 vram.. With no mods or assets.. It hogs more virtual ram rather the physical ram me having 16 gb ram it use at max 11..ok well windows does take 4 or 3 gb so it takes it.. But after forcing my game on Nvidia to run in Resizable Bar (expanding the cpu to gpu buffer) letting it work more efficiently) and applying msi tool message signal based interrupts... My fps went up 25% utilizing my system and that optimized my system

Went and subscribed to these mods, but learned the hard way that the FPS Booster mod isn't compatible with the latest macOS version (I'm on 11.4 "Big Sur"); for unknown reasons, the mod throws an error on game start when it tries to load the latest patches, and the error logs basically say to disable / unsubscribe from the patch loader and FPS Booster. The developer's notes on the mod do say it's "mostly" Mac and Linux compatible, so I'm guessing it needs some kind of update to work correctly with the latest OS. Posting here so any other folks playing this on Mac are aware. Please no comments about my choice of platform. I'm 51 and you're not going to make this tiger change his stripes at this point. 😉

Oh, when subscribing to mods do so individually. Reading and understanding each one before implementing it. You may find you dont need some. I have a huge collection in my links and people are hitting “subscribe to all” without looking at them. Be careful!

@@YUMBL I’m not so indiscriminate as that. 😜😅 Out of your list of 30-something mods used for Twitch and KZbin, I think I only subscribed to 10. I just look for “quality of life” mods and relatively easy enhancer mods like Node Controller or Intersection Marking Tool. Just stuff that lets me maintain my “zen garden” style without going into all kinds of über-control or OCD.

You should follow all instructions from the dialog once you enable PatchLoader. If you skip that part you will see that error every time you start the game which basically says that FPS Booster is not working because PatchLoader (core dependency) has not been initialized correctly at game start (game needs to be started in slightly different way and I can't automate that process). If you haven't seen that dialog with instructions, open content manager in game, go to Mods/PatchLoader nod and then re-enable it. I don't have MacOS so I can't create a clip showing the process in details. You may also ask why you need to do some manual things - because of a Unix(MacOS/Linux) way of handling specific libraries the mod requires to run, sadly.

@@krzysztofg7677 Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I already tried modifying that JSON config to point to the CitiesLoader.sh script instead of default ../MacOS/Cities with no better luck. After doing that, even with a restart or disabling/re-enabling PatchLoader, the PatchLoader mod gives an error that it couldn't find a config file. I'm guessing this has something to do with the ever-increasing security lockdowns happening in MacOS. It *might* also be due to the fact I keep my Steam installs on an external HDD instead of my built-in 1TB SSD, simply to save space with all the massive Steam downloads I have, but that seems unlikely. I appreciate the effort to help me debug this. If I find down the road that I'm starting to see FPS issues I'll take another look at this. But right now, I'm still working on getting a city over about 2,500 population without losing track of all the essentials that need to be in place and the city dying a horrible death. So FPS worries are probably still a ways off for me. 😉
@krzysztofg76773 жыл бұрын
@ClanOMoraign to bad it doesn't work (I assume you didn't (un)subscribe mods while game was running). The other reason for that error might be "wrong" order of launching apps. Somehow to make it work you need to start Steam first and then the game. Maybe that was the issue? Anyways, I've got reports from other MacOS users it works but looking into their logs it seems like they are still on 10.x so you might be right about OS version, sadly.

In my experience it don't matter how much ram you throw at this game. When I had 16gb the game would use 12-13gigs. I upgraded to 32 and now it's using 26-28gigs no new mods whatsoever.

Disagree with the page file point. I use a dedicated 500GB SSD as a page file, and that has absolutely allowed me to expand my asset collection far beyond my computer's RAM limitations. I would have recommended that people use a hard drive *not* running C:S to set up a page file (using the same one as C:S causes crashes).

You should buy more ram.

So how come Cities Skylines is dumping assets in my page file (located on a fast m.2 nvme ssd though), instead of ALL my ram? I have 64GB of ram in my system and when I load up my city it take 38GB of physical ram and 42GB of the page file. Why does it not use more physical ram, for example 58GB physical ram usage and then only 22GB in the page file? I agree with you saying, don't use a page file, but add to it, "on a hard disk". A sata ssd is already somewhat better, but still limited due to the latency over sata, and of course an m.2 nvme ssd is the best choice since those have a direct link to the cpu and can give you the highest IOPS (Input Output (operations) Per Second) that any storage device currently can give you. With the newest PCI-E 4.0 equipped motherboards you can even get m.2. nvme ssd's that go up to 1,4 million IOPS in read speed, and as far as I know that is roughly HALF the speed of your average ram. My current m.2. ssd does 700,000 IOPS, but that is still over PCI-E 3.0 on 6 year old ASUS-X99-A motherboard. It's also wise to simply check ALL the background processes before starting the game, the less CPU usage of any program or service whatsoever, the better. Check that out in the right corner how many 'agents' you see, and use task manager (or CCleaner) or disable all those services you don't need. Many of them are for example services that constantly check for updates, which is not necessary. You don't a daily update on your GPU driver, or Adobe Flash or Java, or Anti-Spyware programs, this you do all manually when you see fit. Every one of these items might be small, but add up pretty well if you don't do anything.

All that matters is that the “top number” in Loading Screen Mod doesn’t turn orange or red. That means you have enough ram.
@eltolent99003 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm confused with getting all missing assets shown in the loading screen mod. Wouldn't the inclusion of those assets (mostly small props in my case) be an extra burden on your computer resources?

Perhaps, but not having those props used within assets may cause issues. Maybe try getting them and see if it helps/hurts
