The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is one of two extant subspecies of Equus Ferus. It is a herbivorous odd-toed ungulate mammal belonging to the taxonomic family Equidae. Humans began domesticating horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC.

I heard an interview with Robert de Niro a while ago. There he said, that improvisation does not happen on the set while the camera is rolling. They are improvising when practicing a scene to figure out what the best way to play is. Then when everyone is fine with it, they do exactly as agreed in front of the camera. And if they have to, they do it over and over again till it seems to be perfect.

I think this is true of some actors/actresses, but others (like Robin Williams) would just spontaneously improvise.

This is probably true, I've done quite a few skits before, and this is a good description of "acting on the fly". We don't follow the exact order of a story or follow a script while practicing, then keep the change and the skit turns out hilarious.

When we are shooting with my friends we do the same, we have the synopsis for the certain scene and we build up the main senctences, and dialouges in rehersal together(but mostly the actors)until we have realistic script, in my experience it makes it more natural, and also creates a fun vibe on the set which is also important, but I highly doubt the would do the same in a big budget movie, paying all the cast, renting the scene and the equipment, while figuring out the dialouge, it isnt cost effective, in my experience everything is planned to the point of exelence before starting the actuall filming process, there will be enough random shit that might screw up the shooting, such as bad weather or bad traffic, so they wouldnt take the risk of figuring shit out on the set

enima Taken from IMDB: "When Leonardo DiCaprio's character Calvin Candie smashes his hand on the dinner table, the actor accidentally crushed a small stemmed glass with his palm and really began to bleed. DiCaprio ignored it, stayed in character, and continued with the scene. Tarantino was so impressed that he used this take in the final print, and when he called cut, the room erupted in a standing ovation. DiCaprio's hand was bandaged and he suggested the idea of smearing blood onto the face of Kerry Washington. Tarantino and Washington both liked this, so Tarantino got some fake blood together."

The taxi scene isn't actually full improv. What happened was, during their first take on the scene a taxi drove onto the set, granting a spontaneous reaction from Hoffman. But this wasn't used in the movie. What they did was they replicated it, this time with the taxi actually being in the script. So the scene we see in the movie isn't actually improvised.

That isn't entirely false. The cab driver was allegedly an extra who messed up by running a red light. Hoffman said the line and Schlesinger made them redo the scene that way several times. It wasn't rewritten into the script, they just kept redoing it until Schlesinger was satisfied with it. So yes, it was improvised.

Wikipedia also says that a scene where Ratso pretends to be hit by a taxi to feign an injury was in the first draft of the script. It even has a link to it... where he does slam the taxi with his fist, but it doesn't have the famous line. So maybe Hoffman improvised the dialogue etc. but it's total bullshit that it was ever an unplanned scene? Hoffman might be misremembering the level of improvisation.

Interesting look into improvisation. I've done one acting role in my friend's crime film. The director put me in a position where I knew my lines from rehearsing but I felt like they didn't come off as real as they should be. Then the filming happened. It was 10pm, we were filming outside, in very cold temps, and I had to smoke cigarettes and drink whiskey during each take. By the time we were half-way into it, I was pissed off from being cold, my lungs hurt from the cigs, and I really just wanted to get the fuck out of there. I channeled that into the acting and to me I thought I kinda sucked. Roll forward 5 months and he shows me my takes. We finished filming my scenes around 2am that night btw. Holy crap, I didn't realize how much I improvised my lines and emotions. Watching myself I felt like I was watching someone else. It was unreal and much better acting than I remember. I like your video, I suggest slowing down your analysis, but from this video alone it looks like you have promise. I watch Every Frame a Painting and I love the way he simply, yet effectively, gets his points across. Just a suggestion so no offense of anything.

That was very well put. The button is important. 100% completely improvised rarely works, but the button is was gives it just that tiny bit of structure that gives it resolution. You were talking about how improvisation is common in Jazz and that is true, but Free Jazz takes this concept to a completely different level. Most of the song is improv at that point instead of just solo parts, and instruments collectively improv in a chaotic way in Free Jazz too, it's not just one person improvising at a time. But usually in a Free Jazz piece it will start and end with an established melody, this make you feel like you got to the end of something when it's over even if the entire meat of the song had no structure at all.

I know it's not Film, but in many of Larry Shue's plays, he has one or two lines which is suggested to be improvised each night to increase the hilarity of it, as well as keep the reaction real. My favorite example of this (because I was in this play) is in The Foreigner, where Froggy makes something up in this made-up language and Charlie turns it into an insult, which is different each night ("I sleep with a cucumber?" "I have smelly ears?" etc.). I feel like sometimes that happens in film too, the best example being the clip you showed at the very end, with Robin Williams. He can do whatever he wants in the middle, but he has to end it with "but you have to keep it in here", and continue on with the scene. This allows for those incredible moments where the actor feels real, but keeps "the button" available for the end. The same happens with Key and Peele sketches, they always knew they were going to end with Dan Smith, but they were allowed to screw around for a bit in the middle with it still making sense.

Very good segment. I love primo improv in film. Another example: F Lee Emory in "Full Metal Jacket" - he improvised a lot of his drill sergeant insults. Kubrick would sometimes not understand the insult/joke, would yell cut, get it explained to him, and then he'd refilm it. People that have never seen the full movie use quotes from Emory in FMJ. Another great example of improv is Andy Robinson in "Dirty Harry". The killer (Robinson) has a gun trained on Harry (Eastwood). Robinson orders Eastwood to withdraw his weapon slowly. When Eastwood pulls out the famous .44 Magnum, Robinson cooes "ooo, that's a big one." That was improv and had the whole crew laughing. A great example of NOT-improv is William Macy's incomplete sentences and ideas in "Fargo". I heard all of that pseudo-stuttering was scripted by the Coen Brothers.

In a film, improv only counts for one of the shots. Unless they have multiple cameras on different angles (and they don't) they can't film both the speaker and the reaction of the listener. Hence, the improv will be repeated in the next shot to fully complete the scene. Which was the true improvised action/line? The Joker clapping, or Gordon looking at him surprised? Hannibal's line or the authentic creeped out reaction Jodie Foster makes? Nicholson pulling out the gun, or DiCaprio looking at him scared? (The Departed)

I think using improv not necessarily for comedy, but rather for sad/disturbing scenes. Picture it: two characters are walking down a dark corridor. The actors are told they're, at some point, going to meet a new character - they haven't been shown who this is or how they'll meet them, so they just have to improvise and pretend to be the unsuspecting characters. After a few minutes of walking, the actors begin to show their dread: it's dark, and the suspension of who this new character is begins to show, when all of a sudden an accrobatic, insane jester comes down from the rafters and pokes his head in-between the two people. The shear terror the actors would be feeling at this masked madman would give off a very real sense of terror, making the scene very believable, because the reaction they gave *was* real. I might be mistaking this for something else, but the same rules still apply: they had no prior knowledge of how or when they would come across this mysterious character, and in the fashion he did made the scene realistic. That's just my opinion, though.

Greatest improv movie moment: The Dark Knight hospital explosion. The explosion was supposed to go off right away. But it didn't. And Heath Ledger decided to continue acting and toying with the detonator after which the explosion finally went off.

I wouldn't be surprised if that awful scene from Pixels was actually in the script. I bet Adam Sandler thought it was hillarious.

I recommend the German Version of the series "the Office" called "Stromberg" (there is also a mobile). Watching this (in German) is the Most improvised Thing ever.

There is footage from Gary Oldman doing improvs on Leon The Professional that are amazing also Ian Holm has the tendency to say things differently every time he has to repeat a scene.

Improvisation in film is like a very hot spice, best reserved for when you need a little extra kick of flavor but at the same time you need to be very careful not to overuse it or misuse it. Stanley Kubrick, for all his notorious control, understood this and allowed for small peaks of improvisation within tight boundaries to create some of the most iconic scenes in film history.

it's funny you would use Key and Peele as an example of good buttoning, because a lot of times when i watch their skits they feel too long and end 'randomly' like there's no punchline. oh well

The best way to improv vs script is to have them actually improv then rewrite the scene clean up the structure

I genuinely forgot for a second that MacGuyver was the name of a show before it became a verb meaning to improvise with limited or unintuitive resources. That's a pretty good legacy with for a show with opening music that bad.

I kinda really wish Matt Johnson was somewhere mentioned for his directing style blurring real people without knowing they're filmed to a scripted structure. All his dialog is improvised since he acts as himself. Everyone check out THE DIRTIES and OPERATION AVALANCHE for a really strange but unique take on improvisation.
