The Curated Life

Күн бұрын

In this candid video, I open up about a habit many of us fall into: the clutter shuffle. You know the drill - moving items from one room to another, convincing ourselves we're decluttering when, in reality, we're just rearranging the mess. But here's the truth: I'm guilty of it too. My impulse buying and hoarding tendencies have led me down a path where decluttering feels like a never-ending game of musical chairs.
It's time to face the music. I need to confront the root of the problem: my impulse buying, hoarding, and the emotional toll it's taking on my life. Join me on this journey as I strive to break free from the clutter shuffle and regain control of my space, my mind, and my life. It's not easy, but it's necessary before it's too late. Let's take the first step together.

This is so relatable. I appreciate your honesty and putting to words how I think many feel. I recently just told my husband that clutter is like radio static in my head and it makes it hard to do other things until it's resolved!

I cannot tell you how much I love this series. It’s not that I just love it but I can so relate to it. Bringing everything home that you see because it’s low cost and it’s beautiful and all the reasons we tell ourselves and then it sits there. Your series, this series has helped me so much, bring home less and appreciate what I have. I saw a set of eight vintage HFM dessert plates, they were green glass and just beautiful. They also had the matching eight dessert dishes. I loved them. I only needed two but they sold them in a set of eight. I put them in my cart, walked around the store and then eventually put them back. It was hard to leave them because they were beautiful, but I did. I hope that somebody else finds them and enjoys them and all their beauty 💚 This series has been a blessing to me and you are a blessing to all of us. Thank you very much. Mary from Chicago.

Mary, I love beautiful things and with them being so cheap at the thrift store just makes them even more tempting to buy. But, I know I need to be more realistic about what I pick up. I had probably 20 beautiful teacups but guess what…rarely do I drink tea! But they were pretty and cheap. And now they’re back at the thrift store. 😂

My husband and I have been purging our house of all the stuff from living life together for 37 years. We donated to habitat for humanity and another local agency that helps low income families get what they need. We have sold so many tools that my husband used through the years too. It feels so liberating. Once it's gone, it's forgotten and I stop feeling guilty for what I spent when I was younger at the thrift store.

Thrifting can be an addictive behavior. You are so right that too much stuff can steal your joy. The more you own, the more it owns you! I am a minimalist at heart, but not in practice. I love beautiful things! But decluttering can be so liberating. Yes, it is hard to get rid of what you've spent hard earned money for, but consider you were just renting that stuff for a brief enjoyment. Or it was money spent towards a valuable life lesson!

Eleanor, I have had a lot of life lessons from my impulse buying and realized that the joy I received was only temporary. Then I’m left with the burden of doing something with the item I just bought. It’s a vicious cycle. ❤️❤️❤️

Oh my word! This has made me anxious for so long because sure I didn’t want to deal with it. But what will say is just jump in and once you get your groove you’ll get it done. Grouping like items is what I usually do and remove trash and then group as donate, keep, give (to family and friends) and sell. You got this! ❤❤❤

I’m happy to see you store your keep items where they don’t look like clutter and you have a plan about those items. The storage in your laundry room is ideal for this for now. You really can just “shop” your own items! When you spoke about “The One Thing” I really felt that!

Oh my! This hits home. Last year we wanted to downsize homes since we are empty nesters. We were moving into a home with only 1/4 of the space, it was drastic. I packed, sold, donated, gave away so much stuff. It was, is it worth packing? If I said no or hesitated, it was not kept. After two months of this, we had it all ready to go. The people purchasing our home had the buyers of their home back out so that snowballed on to three contracts. I call it a god thing. Why? It lifted the burden of our stuff off of us. Yes, are living in a large home, but with 3/4 less stuff. The feeling is amazing. I thought moving would give me this feeling. Nope, decluttering did. Note, I am not a minimalist, far from it! lol. I am happier and content with less to manage both physically and mentally. You will love the freedom. Think, the theme song from Frozen, Let it Go!

I have been watching both of your channels for over a year now and enjoy them. However, your last video cut me to the quick. I watched it twice because I knew I needed to hear it. It read my mail. Then your 2nd video popped up today. And I was barely into it and I started to get angry. Because I knew you were telling my story. And the admission that you can't move forward in life until you deal with the one thing was a word fitly spoken. To me. The cycle of thrifting and clutter is my one thing. It is time I take charge of it as well. Someone commented that thrifting can be an addiction. I recognize this must be so because I derive less and less pleasure from it. I hear myself saying, "I really don't want to be here". Thank you so much for being vulnerable. You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free. God wants us to be free.

Sherri…being accountable can be so hard, but so life changing too. I have been watching you for a few years and have learned so much from you. I decluttered the year you did and it felt such a relief to let things go. Last year with being sick for most of the year and I couldn’t craft as my craft room was upstairs and I couldn’t climb the stairs at all. My hubby bought everything down stairs for me to go through it. I couldn’t believe everything I had in my craft room. Talk about overwhelming to see everything. I donated everything but my cricut and sewing machine. I have been relieved of stress and so much stuff. I think what hit me the most was my girlfriend telling me what she told her hubby before they traveled here last Fall. He was worried about being comfortable in my house and she described it, that their home would fit inside of mine because we’re a two story and hers is a single story. Plus my home she told him was either homemade or thrifted. I honestly felt uncomfortable about them coming. I never looked at my home that way. I have many pieces that my father has made, quilts mom made me and on the walls displayed etc. I have always been told my home has been comfortable to every one else that has visited. I don’t have a lot on my walls and when they visited, her hubby loved my home and said he wanted to live in it because he felt at home. I felt relieved and didn’t feel like a thrift store. But I am still going through decluttering each room again and I think I always will be doing that. I don’t go to the thrift store much anymore, other than to donate. I truly enjoy your videos and I feel very much at home with you and can truly relate to you. God bless you, girlfriend! ❤

Oh my, thank you so much for sharing. It can be so overwhelming to actually go through the stuff we have and come face to face with it. But, how wonderful that your friend’s husband felt at home during his visit. But, I’m sure a lot of that was more about who you and your husband are and not your home. Your words come across as a kind and caring person and I’m sure when people visit, they feel this. ❤️❤️❤️

I found I had clutter when I didn't have a clear, cohesive vision of what I wanted my home to look like and function as. I realized it's first and foremost our shelter, and structure and tidyness was key. Then I wanted it comfortable and cozy. I chose a style that suited those criteria and that I loved. I don't choose eclectic because that makes me feel tense and scattered. I want my home to be our home, and not a mixture of each style in each room, if that makes sense. I still have a few things to clear out, but I'm almost there.

I try really hard to get rid of stuff and I have, but I struggle because I put things in a box to donate and I think to myself “but I love this”. So then I take it out of the box 📦, it’s a real struggle. And when you call yourself a part time, part time reseller, I consider myself a part time, part time, part time reseller. 😂🤣.

Sherri, I think when we were all under lockdown with the C19 mess, it really did a number on many of us. Then when we were released many of us including myself began thrifting almost to a hoarding sense. I thrifted prior to C19, but something changed and I almost couldn’t stop. Yes, joy at the time of purchase then regret, remorse then anger. Anger because what was I thinking???? It almost became an addiction for me, and I’m sure many others can relate. Now, I can barely stand to shop for anything. I have been purging my things, but my hubby oh my! He really needs to get rid of so much. Who needs 6 sets of golf clubs????? It is so freeing to drive up to a thrift store & empty out the back of my suv. I drive away feeling so much lighter. Keep at it. If you must bring another item in, something MUST GO OUT. Hang in there. 😊❤😊🙏

I have not been in a Thrift Store in over a year and my home is so much better off, because I do not have room to store things, especially things I do not need. I am now decluttering my home again and have quite a bit of things to be donated that are in my Foyer ready to go. I cant deal with it any more so I am hauling car loads to the thrift stores where locals and charities can benefit. We moved to a more modern home and brought some pieces with that don’t fit but we spent up for them. Im having a problem parting with them but they drive me nuts in this house. I have no problems giving up regular furniture so why cant I give up these pieces?? Ugh! 🙄

The dog surveying the room is like “ Mama, I may have a fur coat, but you have waaaay too much cr-p.” Cute puppy - their looks always say it all :)
