Something that has really helped me. Instead of trying to force myself to stop shopping or trying to want less, I've started to recognize how much I value space, peace, and ease in my life. When I simply focus on that, it makes not bringing more stuff into my home feel effortless.

I was a keeper of “smalls”.. books were my thing starting when I was 5 or 6 years. Had wonderful teachers that encouraged me to read… so more & more books. As time passed I found comfort in the collection of things .. things for decor, buying thrift store clothing because I used these items to remake into my wardrobe for school. My father only saw the need to provide a minimal amount of clothing.. sewing was a wonderful hobby for me. I tried to collect things that I could use for sewing & crafts but had to hide them in my room.. usually under my twin bed! Once my father discovered my stash he took it upon himself to clear out my collection by using a broom to haul everything out, hand it to me to place in the trash as he watched. If I collected more things and he would find I was scolded and physically abused…slapped and push around! This caused me to hide things elsewhere.. some at home or at a friend’s house… or the belt would come out! Needless to say when I graduated from high school at 16 ( I had great teachers and saw my potential) and I was free of my father’s ruling. Soon after I met a wonderful loving young man ( 5 years older).. he was just out of the Army.. having served 4 years. He was the most lovable, adoring & caring person. We married, me at 17y/o and shared a life together that ended in 2018 when he passed after suffering from ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease at age of 66. God blessed me with the most wonderful loving person I could ever ask for. He was so generous and never complained of my collections 💕💖

Oh, this has me in tears! Thank you for sharing. My mom had a similar upbringing and her father found all of her handmade dolls and threw them away. She loved those dolls and she made them from corn husks . They were dirt poor and those were her only toys. Her father was a drunk and he did awful things to his kids. She never forgot that moment even as an old woman she would tell the story. It made me tear up every time. What a blessing you had in your husband. ❤️❤️❤️

I'm so sorry for your upbringing with a father like that. I'm also so happy to hear you had a loving and understanding man in your life, and I'm sorry he isn't on earth anymore. I hope your precious memories of him comfort you. I think many of us are triggered to be gatherers by things that we grew up with. It's an ongoing struggle.

Take it from been there done that....we spend the spring and summer of our lives finding our mate, feathering our nest and raising our young. The better the nest, the better we survive in comfort. Then comes time the fledglings are gone and the nest needs to be cleaned and repurposed. You are evolving as nature intended. You have reached that time in your life to de-feather the nest and repurpose. Don't fret yourself. You are right on track.

Guilty as charged. From a young age to now. It’s hard to break. If u can’t afford certain purchases then u start buying little stuff. Millions of people have this problem because I think that it gives us a good feeling n then next day you have to start over. Struggle is real.

Debra, you are so right! I don’t have the money to make huge renovations in my home so I buy little stuff to “decorate” and then end up not using the items. If I saved the money I spent on the “little things” I would have had enough money to do the renovations. Thank you for sharing, Debra. ❤️❤️❤️

I came to the same realisation last year, although I don’t have a lot of extra stuff, I had too much and every piece I had that wasn’t being used was taking up my time. So I started ‘curating’ each room. I put up the art work, I dressed the beds, put in the furniture and accessories to finish each room completely and I got rid of everything else. All the extra bedding, throws and lamps, most of the decor (I kept one bin of favourites to be able to change them out seasonally). I now only keep 1 small bag of cosmetics and 1 set of hair care products in each bathroom. I now only buy personal care products when one is about to run out. I can’t tell you how much this has changed how I live. Every single thing in my home now has a place and I have nothing extra cluttering up my cupboards. If I decide to refresh anything in a room I will donate what I take out. The impulse to buy does decrease with practice and now I only shop for what I need. It’s a very satisfying experience and I hope you learn to love the journey.

Thank you for sharing. My Mom's thrifting addiction has prevented me from going to her house for ten years. She lives 5 minutes away from a Goodwill and 15 minutes from a large Salvation Army. Her motto has been, "it's such a great price, I couldn't leave it there". I am grateful for the thrifty finds she has given to me, as well as my daughters and grand kids. That being said, a four year old does not 20 pairs of shoes or 100 stuffed animals. I feel like my Mom never fully dealt with the trauma of losing her Mother, also an avid thrifter, and after she retired, her adventures became her job. I love to thrift, but if I'm not going to use it, it stays. I went a bit nuts with clothing and have more than I need. Now, if something new comes in, 2 go out. One day at a time dear.

I am still watching this. I am brainwashing myself in all different parts of the house. But, I must start with all the paperwork clutter that has accumulated for over a year after the death of my husband. I was an IT Specialist but not someone that could break in to his laptops, figure out logins and passwords and try to figure out what accounts are active, inactive, suspended, closed, what we owe and don't - it is a nightmare! But the same rules apply. Closed and get rid of what you don't need, keep the necessary accounts, figure out how they will be paid, and purge, purge, purge. Thank God I am watching you. Thanks Sherri, ♥️ XO Janet

I used to do this too. The thrift stores have so many pretty things and clothes for a fraction of new. I rationalized that it was so cheap to just buy it. I realized though, that there is no way I could use all these things and it just created more work for myself. I decluttered several times and now just have a few things that bring me joy. I no longer go to the thrift stores. I have plenty of clothes and pretty things.

Hi Sherri. I’ve learned that the cycle of buying from any kind of store is a matter of rewarding myself… for something I’m dealing with or have gone through - a temporary kind of ‘fix’.. it’s a matter of some kind of depressive condition that makes the ‘find’ feel so good that it becomes addictive-- we crave that feeling of accomplishment and happiness in the find…. It needs to be healed and given over to the Lord.. confess it - release it - and lean on the Lord when the need to thrift or buy arises …. Don’t let it bring you down :)).

You are describing my situation exactly. Thrifting is my favorite activity. I like beautiful things, and if I can get them at a bargain, so much the better. I was going through my china cabinet today. I have so much crystal that I can’t display nicely because there’s too much. So I am picking out my favorite and things I actually use and I’m going to give away or donate the rest. My peace of mind is worth it. Thanks for being open.

Last year we moved into a house with no basement and only one storage room. I was forced to do a major declutter. It was hard but I forced myself to let go of things that I wasn’t using and I really wasn’t that crazy about. What a difference it has made! Now I have an organized storage area where everything is in labeled bins. I can easily find anything I’m looking for. I do still go to thrift stores and I do still buy but I only buy it if I have a specific place or use for the item. If I don’t then it stays in the store. I periodically go through my clothes and donate what I haven’t been wearing and make room for new items. Thank you Sherri for being vulnerable before us. Please don’t beat yourself up. Maya Angelo said “When you know better, you do better.” You’ve called attention to it and you’re making positive steps to improve it. You can do it! 💪🏻

I think the older we get the less we want to be a slave to (idols). Collecting things is mentally preparing for the better life we wish we lived, but, not always what our reality is. Trauma and loss is related to consuming, hoarding, and ADHD. It can be an avoidance and escape technique as well. Thank you for your complete honesty you have helped alot of your viewers this last year, myself included. Thank you.

I went through a traumatic last 4 years of a long marriage. If I have an excuse not to let people in ,I am safe. My daughter insisted that she come help me. She will be here with me for one afternoon. I'm a basket case. I am out of money, and am working on starting a resell business. I am excited about it, but worried I will lose my home. I am 65. I made this bed, and either can lie in it, or climb out. Thank you for your inspiration.

Wow this hit so close to home…I think, for me, it’s seeing all the new “trends” out there (think Pottery Barn) and wanting that style to incorporate into my space. Also, getting the look for less makes it even more enticing for me to over buy it and It’s so easy to fall into that trap. I swear it’s a cycle I need to break too.

For anybody worried about the cost/value of the items, there is only one real time that that matters to ask yourself and that's before you bring it home. Once you bring it home, it's a sunk cost. Time is more valuable than money. We will never have enough time so you should not waste your time on the perceived value of clutter. This is a lesson I'm working on myself.

I am practicing the one in one out rule. I did a massive declutter of the entire house in January. Thrifting brings me so much joy, the thrill of the hunt. Now I am only allowing myself to “trade up.” I have been able to enjoy the hunt just as much but have been content with leaving the treasure behind for someone else to enjoy if I can’t decide what I will trade out BEFORE I make the actual purchase. I have also been returning the clothes within the 7 day time frame if I don’t love it instead of just living with it because it was a good deal. I also am holding myself to finishing current projects before I start a new one…..wish me luck on that one. It is proving more difficult. Ha!

I needed this motivation to get started. My mom is in the end stages of dementia & my dad passed away in 2018. When we cleared their house to sell it, the amount of stuff we had to go through was mind boggling. I don’t want to do that to my kids. It’s so unfair to them. Thanks again

Sherri, I completely understand where you’re coming from, started declutterring with you last year at the same time, it’s difficult sometimes ~ especially in my case when I work in the belly of the beast ( I work for an auction company) my example is Dept 56, I collect it, it became a lot to store and display, decided last year I only want to collect a certain line of Dept 56 (Christmas in the City) we’ve had 2 MAJOR auctions of Dept 56 and I found myself jumping overboard again 🤦🏻‍♀️ thank goodness I was able to just watch before I bid….i feel like your not giving yourself enough credit for all the hard work you did after your mom passed, at the least give yourself some grace, you had/have goals for fixing things in your house, so you got off track a little, BUT you recognized it before you went over the edge! So do what you’re doing, drop back, reassess and refocus! We’re here for you, and we’ve got this 👍🏻💪🏼

Sending my love and good thoughts to you. I can so relate. I'm an artist and could not say no, to any kind of craft supplies for many years. We moved a year ago and I was sickened at how much I had and how much I had to let go of. It's a good slap in the face. Needless to say, I woke up!!! Love you girl. ❤

Thank you for your honesty. We grew up with very little & I tend not to throw a lot away. I hate te clutter. We redid flooring in our upstairs several years ago & the contents of those rooms are in my living room which was unused. I feel it can all be discarded or donated as it’s not been used for many years. Also I need to declutter when hubby isn’t around, he likes to hang onto stuff!

Thank you so much for this video. It is so helpful. I am also trying to figure out what to declutter first. To help me, I've assigned each room a month. Hopefully, I won't need an entire month per room, but it helps focus me. If not I will find myself in every room doing a little bit of nothing.

I understand completely, I love to thrift and my basement is overwhelming!! It is my goal this year to declutter my home because I need peace and I only have one child who is 31 and definitely has no interest in any of it and I don't want this burden on him. I also lost my best friend 2 years ago and thrifting became an escape, trying really hard to change that and now do gardening and love it!Thank you for being so vulnerable and prayers for you!!

You are so right, Sherri, to allow yourself Grace. Grace allows us some space, self-acceptance, and room to take a hard look at things which then prompts some form of action. It seems to me that you are well on your way with the emotional aspect and are moving forward beautifully toward your goals. As always, thank you so much for sharing…

Good evening Sherri! Peace and contentment is everything! It takes effort, determination, time and pushing forward to remove the “toxicity”. Believe me, I understand and know the journey you’re on. In my perspective, I want to be the one to remove the unnecessary and excess clutter from my home while I have the ability to and not put the burden on my husband or next of kin. I don’t have children. So for me, it has become a perpetual thing! You will feel so relieved every time! May God bless you! 🙏🏻💕

I feel your pain. I have been feeling this way all winter. Don’t focus on the failure. Just dust yourself off and tackle it one zone at a time. We have a bin at the back door in the laundry room that collects unwanted items. I bring in empty boxes and once a week I head to the charity shops to unload the car. It feels great. I sell soft goods on eBay and saw I should get $100 for my “rare” Chaps bedroom floral drapes I was going to donate. Why pass up that kind of cash?? You’ve got this! We’re cheering you on girl!!!!

We all have things inside ourselves that we are trying to manage. Sometimes, especially us thrifters, we find a kind of solace in these beautiful things that we are so attracted to. It can be difficult to find the balance and like you are doing now we need to check in with ourselves and acknowledge what is truthfully going on for us and this is good and healthy. It's hard though isn't it? I know it is for me.Thank you again for your wonderful videos, I enjoy each and every one. Much love to you x

Dear Sherri I started watching you a few years ago and had a connection with you because I too love to cruise thrift stores, resell stores, antique stores etc. Finding inexpensive unique items for my home and I’m not a reseller like you. So I too accumulate too much! My best friend and I are alike in that way and are going through exactly what you are right now and feel the same way you do! I want to declutter because I don’t want to leave my son my mess and my husband and I are considering relocating, since we are retired, and I will not be taking all my stuff with me! My best friend is decluttering because her and her husband are going to remodel their home! Don’t be hard on yourself. I know there’s a lot of us out there that are in the same situation❤ Thank you for opening up and sharing ….we feel for you! I know you can do it and I know my friend and I can too😊

It is too bad and I feel horrible about the money spent on things and so much stuff I have in many death piles that hasn't been listed. I needed to hear this as well. I have grown children love the pretty stuff too. I do NOT want to be a burden to my children with too much stuff to go through clutter. I needed it this too I will be 60 in two months and I need to stop this as well and get a handle on it > I buy stuff to craft and fix with ideas the just go into new piles. thanks for sharing will be following your journey and will try to do this along with you.

Then I had a garage sale and sold barely anything because I live on a street that is out of the way. I thought to myself, I'm wasting a whole day to make maybe $ 50, my time is more valuable then that. so now I have no more garage sales. I donate things I can't sell on ebay .. Just know you are not alone,. God Bless

I was talking to a friend who also resells and is the manager of a thrift store and we both said that if we pass over something and decide not to buy it, we usually end up finding the same thing later down the road. So, why worry if we don’t buy it. The thrift store will always be full of more stuff. ❤️❤️❤️

Homeless shelters will take unopened bath products. Also what helped me was to put the date on products when I start to use it. Then when it’s empty I make a note of the date it’s finished. That shampoo took me 3 months to use up. So I have 3 bottles which gives me almost a year of shampoo( or whatever). I now buy 1 item (backup)when one item is open. So one in use and 1 spare.

Wonderful theme and upload. I think this is the year many of us are doing the same thing. I have been better about impulse shopping. Cleaning, decluttering and enjoying what I have will be the theme for this year. And I don’t know if we should regret and be hard on ourselves- instead consider it defeating an unseen enemy- with COVID and telework we have been separated from what keeps people normal - interacting with other people. Instead we have stuck ourselves in social media of different types that all lead to online shopping somehow. No buys and low buys will set us straight again. Spending time with people will replace the high from Amazon deliveries. But I have to say I love your projects. ❤. Take care.

Your channel came up in my feed and I'm happy it did. The confession was just what I needed. I have been decluttering in a way out of necessity we are doing our floors and I'm forced to face my stuff. You are so right about having to be sick of the stuff and needing to get it removed. My enough moment came having to shift all the things into one room to be able to do the other. I realized there was so much that we never used and honestly forgot. I am beginning to feel so much lighter and like the fog is finally lifting.

As for products. I use the saying, “I pay to learn”. We try products and we don’t like them but we can’t let them go because we paid good money for them. However they are just that, consumables, products. We tried them. The key word tried. We paid to try them. We didn’t like them, so we have to give ourselves permission to throw them out. Don’t even try to give them away. Trash. We paid to learn we don’t like them. Give your shelf permission.

💯I don’t have a lot of money so I purchase inexpensive items to make do. For example, I needed area rugs but couldn’t afford nice ones that I really wanted so I bought $38 ones from Wayfair. I end up with several cheap rugs that I didn’t really love. I have THREE comforters for my bed because I got each one inexpensively. I don’t really know what my personal style is so I keep all three. 😞
