Since 2022, the politics of Pakistan have been rocked by a struggle for power centered around former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan, who was ousted from office by a parliamentary no-confidence motion in April 2022, has alleged that his removal from office was orchestrated at the behest of the US government. This January, Khan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking government documents as part of his effort to prove US involvement in his ouster. Khan's saga has ignited mass protests across Pakistan over the past two years. Despite being imprisoned during national elections this February, Khan's political party, PTI, won more parliamentary seats than any other political party. Journalist and policy analyst Raza Rumi joins The Marc Steiner Show for an in-depth look at Pakistan's political crisis in the context of its long and turbulent struggle for democracy.
Raza Ahmad Rumi is a Pakistani writer and a public policy specialist. He is the director of the Park Center for Independent Media, Ithaca College, and founder of the digital media platform NayaDaur Media in collaboration with Pakistani diaspora in the United States.

It seems to me - that Iman Khan was looking to have Pakistan join the BRICS process in 2022. In 11/23, Pakistan formally applied to join the BRICS10 - anyway!

Thanks for doing this show Marc! Please also invite Ryan Grim of Breaking News on the show who's also a white house journalist, and Justin Podur of the Anti-Empire Project. Both of these gentlemen are very well-versed in internal affairs of Pakistan, especially Ryan who did the diplomatic cables exposé.

Marc thanks for an interesting interview. I don't think Raza really could give you a balanced view on the mess in Pakistan. He conveniently side stepped a number of questions. Hope you can get someone like Dr Moeed Pirzada who can give you a different view on Pakistan and the political circumstances the country is facing. What we are seeing in Pakistan is something never before seen. Raza is a fine journalist and someone whose point of view needs to be seen in perspective.

Perhaps they should create a works program that pays a bit better than the military, and offer the jobs to military personnel first. I'm just thinking out loud; perhaps they've already tried that.

_This_ is how you need to vote come November: We must fully resist and _always vote_ against (& less authoritarian than) both the Democratic *and* Republican Parties- including Trump, Vivek Ramaswamy, Rand Paul (He’s _no_ Ron Paul), and all other Republicans. For _all_ public positions. And this same strategy applies against the two-party monopolies in _all_ countries worldwide. Real libertarians will never be Republicans or Republican loyalists. You can always _write-in_ an anti-authoritarian person if no candidates for a position fit that bill. This will continuously reduce the power of _both_ authoritarian parties in the two-party monopolies. Until our task is complete. Repeat strategy for all new authoritarian parties that emerge.

In the U.S. - it's effectively a one party Uniparty. In 2025, an independent leader must initiate a 1933-like Bankruptcy Reorganization, which would firewall out $2 thousand trillion of gambled-up claims in the IMF system {Actually, this must be done now, before there's a reverse leveraged blowout.}!

Google, LCI, BBC, MSNBC, DW, FR24, FOX, Predator satiation. When predators are inundated with potential prey, they can only consume a limited amount. By producing a very large quantity of individuals, prey benefit from protection in numbers. This strategy is a widespread adaptation in a wide diversity of prey, including many species of plants, sea turtles, insects and fish.

Whether Pakistan political leaders alone can keep the country intact is doubtful. In Baloch state there is a strong independence movement and other regions in North West frontier are very much tribal areas with tribal laws. Its a country with not only poverty but lacks education. A country where vaccination is not believed in and health workers are at risk. A backwardness that more than 75 years of independence and self rule has failed to deal. A fractured nation. A mistake of birth. The founder of Pakistan wanted it to become the refuge for all Muslims in South Asia which it didnt. Corrupt politics, uneducated, fractured on ethnicity and caste. Very similar to Myanmar though there the British colonial period is more to blame.

I can't believe how some Western journalists would see a brown self-proclaimed media person from Pakistan and just assume they it's too far-fetched they could be a tool of the CIA and Pakistani military establishment and totally ignore the red flags. Having Raza Rumi who now runs his Naya Daur establishment mouthpiece is the equivalent of asking the chief correspondent of CGTN about political opposition to the CCP.

The truth is that one man show of army chief, who are very unpatriotic, greedy for wealth with their lacks of world views, education and big EGO, low achievements made the worst decisions for Pakistan. The last ex chief Bajwa, who did treason against his own country for personal greed for extension, and this Bipolar army chief, who wants the army to do farming and suffering from delusion of being king , this man has thrown Pakistan citizens votes in dust bin, because Pakistani elected IK and PTI! This army chief sold the election to 2 mafia families of Pmln, and PPP , who helped them in looting Pakistan for building their wealth in UAE , UK and USA ! IK is the most popular leader across the board, must be released !

As a Pakistani I appreciate Raza Rumi's objective and unbiased perspective. I most definitely don't agree with him about normalizing relations with India. Muslims are under oppression in occupied Kashmir and India in general and we should be supporting them in anyway we can, there are other countries we can trade with.

Please make sure you invite eminent and neutral journalists like Dr. Moeed Pirzada, Imtiaz Gul, Ahmad Noorani, Cyril Almeda and others, who believe in objective journalism. Thanks
