If the tip has been used and is dirty, can I get it hot and clean it with brass wool _then_ do this process or will I have to start with a new tip? Thanks a bunch for sharing this info with us. Two other questions- when you do this on a tip is it set for the life of the tip or will the tinning paste wear off over time? And is the cleaning sponge supposed to be dry or wet? I always have used a dry one but I’m very new to soldering.

Thanks for the video. I have 2 questions. 1. I just discovered that there is a product called 'solder paste.' It seems it could achieve the goals of this video, of coating the tip before heating, but without needing to apply corrosive flux which are found in tinning fluxes, and without needing to wrap solder wire that falls off in chunks. What is your opinion? I also always heard warning not to put flux on your solder tip? so it seems the solder paste would help? Thanks. (My idea is to coat the tip with solder paste, while also holding solder wire to the tip as it heats). 2 Also, I am wanting to use a solder that has nickel in it. So I would expect I should use a different type of solder for tinning the tip. I heard to use 63/37 as you want high tin content?
@IMRROcom Жыл бұрын
I will just boiler plate this from another source too lazy to type it out. "tinning flux contains ground-up solder flakes, known as tinning powder, that clean, tin and flux most commonly soldered metals, including copper, brass, zinc, galvanized iron lead and tin or copper-coated metals." I'm not a fan of Solder paste as I do not have the control I need or want with a hair of 63/37. As for acid issues I'm still using that same tip in the video and that was 6 years ago. the import thing is to keep the tip clean, make sure it is coated so oxygen can not get to it, AND NEVER TTOUCH IT WIT A WIRE BRUSH, File etc. use a bras sponge and it will last forever so to speak.

Just use it to coat the iron again etc.

This was some excellent information. I do a lot of soldering and I never knew this. Thank You! Looking forward to more of your soldering tips.

Do not let the Tip oxidize. As the Tip heats up the solder will melt and wet the tip befor it builds up any oxide.

Cool. It needs to be a thinning flux?

Yes, Tinning has metals in it that helps a lot over regular flux

@@IMRROcom Thanks. I checked my current gear (I just bought a cool soldering station, called the KSGER T12, it's now a favorite tool, along with a digital caliper by General), I remember buying a cleaning substance in a tiny metal container, whereby you need to dip a hot iron (260 Celsius maybe- what's your temperature for tinning btw?) into it and I think it's an acid (but it's not pure rosin), will that compound tin the iron as well (is this the tinning flux- the labels are in chinese, can't read it). By the way, why isn't the very edge of tips, copper. Why's it iron plating? Isn't copper a better conductor? Also my old tip has been eaten a bit at the edge (like a phase of a moon) even though I always clean it with damp soldering sponge after every use. What caused that pitting? Thanks again stay safe. I can't wait to solder some more and repair all my gadgets if possible (it affects my focus on my main project, if somethings's not working).

That's something really learning. This is the same method our tutor at *** defense labs taught us.

Say what? How many people joke about the guy doing the video, be honest. What school and class?
