I was actually way more traumatized by the bird that gets shot than Bambi's mom. It still haunts me.

I think the way they have Bambi's mom die is so much worse than showing it. Him walking around saying "mother? mother?" is the most heartbreaking way to handle it. It pairs the heaviness of her death with his innocence, not even realizing what has happened, sweetly calling for his dead mother as if she's just around the corner, about to walk into view. To me that is SO much heavier than actually showing her die. It's not the death of a deer that's so powerful, it's the death of a mother in relation to her small child who can't even comprehend the fact that his mother might not be there.

In Felix Salten's story there was a day when all the animals were running for all the hunters. Bambi was separated from his mother and when the day was over, he got together with the other animals who had survived, including his Aunt Ena and her daughter Faline. Bambi asked if either of them had seen his mother and they said no. The last sentence in the chapter was,"Bambi never saw his mother again."

I've never thought that the scene where Bambi's mom gets shot was as scaring as many people make it out to be. Even when I watched Bambi as a kid.

Little April Shower is such a beautiful song. It makes me so happy. Even though you don't see the mom getting shot I think the fact that Bambi starts yelling "Mother? Mother?" Is just so heartbreaking 😭

"Little April Shower" is definitely an example of what geniuses Disney's early songwriting team (Frank Churchill and Larry Morey in this song) were -- They took what might have been a simple, repetitive ditty, and made it so complex and beautiful with rounds, modulation, and other techniques.

I think Bambi deserves a lot more recognition than he actually gets. I have been searching the net trying to find out if he's represented at all at Disneyland. So far all I've found is that there's a picture of him in World of Color and of course a little merchandise in the stores. We're going at the end of this month and I was hoping there was some kind of statue or something that I could take a picture next to. But oh well maybe I'll find a giant plush to take a picture next to. Bambi is one of my all time favorite Disney movies and he became even more of a favorite when I found out that his voice is a distant cousin. A few years ago another distant cousin posted an article on Facebook about it and pretty much every Dunagan shared that article like crazy. It was pretty cool. I wish I could meet him, maybe someday.

Always great to learn fantastic facts about Disney films! Bambi was my favorite movie as a child and would play the VHS on repeat to the point that my mother would constantly have "drip drip drip little April showers" stuck in her head. Bambi will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you for doing it!

Disney Legend: "Man is in the forest" is rumored to be the phrase used among animators any time they wanted to let other's know that Walt was in the animation building and headed their way..

The forest conservation message may be why the understated death of Bambi's mom is so impactful. Man is never seen, but his impact on the movie is huge.
@pollyflores418

I think part of what makes Bambi's mother's death so understated is that the animators had NO CHILL and immediately played a spring shot of little cute animals with a cheerful "tralalala" song

Oh my gosh so much stuff about Bambi lol I loved it! Yeah I never watched it as a kid even though we had it. It wasn't until I was sometime in junior high I think when I finally watched it and then when his mom died I was like "oh, that's it? That's what everyone is torn apart by?" Hahaha it was sad but not like everyone makes it out to be, that's for sure.

This isn't necessarily a down to Disness movie idea but I think it would be really interesting to make a video that showcases all the disney movies that were based off of other stories and ones that are original disney movie ideas. I felt like for a long time I knew this, but I don't think too many do.

I really don't like Bambi- I appreciate it and I know people love it but there's just a few films (mainly from that era) which I just don't like and Bambi is probably number 1. You should do Black Cauldron for October given its darker themes. I look forward to this series every month!

I dunno, I rewatched it a few years ago and still found the death pretty painful! I think the fact that it IS so understated and that you don't actually see it happen is part of it. All you hear is a gunshot and then Bambi running around all sad and lost. :'(

Please consider doing Sword and the Stone! It was referenced just briefly in this video, and I got a bit excited! Definitely my favorite non-Disney Princess movie, although it always left me feeling odd at the end. Like Merlin gets angry at Arthur and abandons him, then Arthur pulls the sword and is overwhelmed by the people who suddenly want to worship him, and Merlin just....returns and is all good? I dunno. Felt a bit unfinished to me, because the movie ends right after he is crowned, but I've always loved the episodic feel of the movie with Archimedes, Madame Mim, and both Arthur and Merlin transforming into fish or squirrels. :) Thanks for considering!

Great discussion of Bambi, truly a beautiful looking film! The scene with Bambi's mother dying might be a case of us being desensitized to scenes like this in later animated films. In particular, Littlefoot's mother in The Land Before Time and Mufasa in The Lion King had death scenes that really stand out to people today. I'm old enough to have seen Bambi on VHS before Land Before Time and before The Lion King was even released, so that was the first time I'd seen anything like it; it was very affecting at that time!

In the book, there was a huge invasion by hunters in Wintertime-probably the beginning of Hunting Season. Bambi's mother told him to just run and they were eventually seperated among all the animals. Then when the day was over, the surviving animals-including Bambi and Faline-got together in the forest grove. Faline's mother joined them, but no one had seen Bambi's mother. The last wrods in the chapter were,"Bambi never saw his mother again."

Don't you think the fact that Bambi's mother's death is understated that it makes it more impactful? I wouldn't say it's traumatizing but it was the first movie I can recall watching in which a character dies. And I think it's important that we feel so deeply for Bambi and his mother because it aids the message of the film. I learned lots from this video! Thanks for doing it. One thing I would love to add is that even though this movie doesn't have the best soundtrack and is pretty slow, I think it's one of the most quotable. Thumper is one of my favorite Disney characters for this reason.

One of my co-workers (female) is named Bambi, although the character is male. The film is the only instance where I've heard falling in love referred to as "twitterpated." But those scenes do seem to represent a transition from opposite-sex parent to spouse/partner. Those of us who are heterosexual tend, for good or ill, to partner with people who are like our OS parents, as said parents were our model for how the OS should behave.
