I recently landed my first software developer role and would like to give my 2 cents. DO NOT get stuck in tutorial hell. Instead of the tutorials, focus on getting really good at one thing (frontend, backend, database design, etc). Build projects even if you don’t know how to start, break the project down into small problems and build each piece one at a time. The more projects you build, the better you get and more comfortable with adding complex features. If you do it this way, you can break into the industry faster, in my opinion. It took me 2 years until I “felt ready” to apply for jobs. In reality, I could’ve started applying after 6 months. I found a job for 80k within a month of searching. Moral of the story, specialize in one thing and build projects around that, then start applying. Good luck to everyone.

Thanks for sharing! If you don’t mind me asking, what did you specialize in and is your job something you can do working from home?

@@namimm3366 I am a full stack developer but I spent most of my time focusing on frontend technologies. In my opinion, the barrier to entry is lower for a frontend dev and there are a ton of jobs available. My job is remote for the time being but will be in office when COVID becomes less of a problem.

This coronavirus lockdown made me push harder to find a viable career alternate. Since past 2 years I was failing to even continue to a basic HTML tutorial because I was in the comfort zone of a normal 9 to 5 finance job. Now with the lockdown, its been like a week and I have already applied a few of the basic HTML commands and made my first web page.

Meanwhile, I have friends who have no GitHub or side projects at all and failed tech interviews and not cs majors but found jobs. It’s actually depressing knowing I could’ve majored in English , thus giving more time during school months to code instead of working hard for that high gpa and got a job.

As I'm sitting learning html, I get this video in my suggestions. Data base developing sounds like a plan. I want to learn, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Phython. If getting my foot into the door with that realm, I'm all for it. Thank you for giving clarity and realistic expectation. Many people who promote coding through youtube, say 3 to 6 months or even a year of learning those coding languages before you land a job. It makes sense if you do not have a computer science degree to begin in Database. Thank you!

Good video. My advice to people that are just starting or don’t have technical backgrounds is to build things and not just read and memorize stuff. That will not work in this field. You can’t just read a book on programming you must program often and create things. Build an application through the entire stack, everyone has an idea for an application just build it. Pick one scripting language, pick a framework, pick a database and get started.

The problem is our current software provider for our Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (aka CAFR) is significantly raising their prices. Thus, my motivation to learn software development, so I can write our own software. I already developed our basic financial statements using Excel (programmed in VBA), but it's not a full blown CAFR prep software.

It's an awesome video, and the points are completely relevant. But living in Africa, Nigeria specifically, the tech climate here is a little different. Employers don't want and would likely not give a job to someone who knows only a subset of the general work most developers they have already do. They want someone who can build a feature from the database right on to the client side button that needs to be clicked. So I had to learn Java, SQL, HTML and CSS before (GWT let me avoid going in too deep) before I started my first coding job. Later on I added Python and JavaScript to my toolbelt. It's really great advice, but sometimes it doesn't fit perfectly into the tech climate in some geographical locations.

@@jackjohnstone7841 right now it isn't. And it's not at all easy getting out. Sometimes I wish it came down to just my skills, then I'd get a shot at leaving. But the name Nigeria scares the rest of the world. It's like a label we can't seem to take off. But we do what it takes to survive, even if what it takes is learning a bunch of languages and frameworks to earn a living.

I have plenty of time on my hands and can knock them both out within the 3 month period you mention. Also, I was hoping to see if you have any tips for me as far as getting my foot in the door for a Junior SW Developer job or which path you would take if you were in my shoes. I am passionate about coding and really enjoy the outcome of writing and creating content through coding. Thank you and continued success!

0:25 or what if you were smart and never went to college. I’ll tell you how to become a developer very simply. Go to some meetups and find a friend/mentor. Then take advantage of the billion resources online (for free). Ask you mentor to help you figure out things as you progress, and when you’re ready, start building things. Then get a job/intern.whatever position - just get your foot in the door and that’s it. Don’t let anyone ever tell you you need a degree to be a developer. The end.
