the reason Weekend thought it was "too feminine" at first is because it was originally written by a woman, but he didn't like that so he eventually got her to leave the project and that's why Sam The Creep Levinson is on now. It went from a female-led perspective to a male gaze fantasy

I hate that Abel said that too, but HE wrote the original script, not a woman. Originally there was a female director tho, and after Sam took over he also rewrote the entire series. People have said that the original script was way better and that The Weeknd didn’t touch it since Sam hopped onto the project. Just something that the person said in the rolling stone article that people seem to look over.

I felt the same. Some ppl might argue that this is a good acting but here’s the thing. The Weeknd doesn’t seem affected by his character. We know his character is kinda a r@pist, manipulative and overall an intensely crazy character. So many actors who play intense roles like joaquin pheonix as joker, kate winslet in the reader, evan peters as jeffrey dahmer, zac efron as ted bundy, etc, they’re all affected and some are traumatized by their crazy characters. Cuz obviously its hard to act as something that serious and something you are FAR not…… But the Weeknd as Tedros felt real, he’s comfortable in playing the role, he seems proud of it and he seems….way too natural.

its like to the point where its actually triggering like okay you can make these "toxic" dominating manipulative male characters but at least imho there needs to be a little bit of an element of unrealisticness. like christian grey couldn't exist, he isn't real. you can watch it because you have some solace in the fact that he cant really hurt you. tedros can, and does. and so many girls have had to deal with it. its lowkey triggering like its too real. he gives "is it bubblegum pink" vibes and it just makes me so uncomfy especcially since the show doesn't actually seem to be putting in the work to demonize that and actually draw the line and paint him in the bad light he deserves to be painted in --- it seems like its actually glorifying it. its just so icky and ew and shudder-inducing

I've never been a fan of Levinson. I got to the line in Euphoria where Maddy "pretended" she didn't remember hooking up with that one nerdier kid to make Nate jealous and I stopped watching. A topless underage girl being nonconsentually choked and doubling back implying she liked it then another girl lying about sex because she regretted it, it was a slimy sexist's victim blaming tweets played out on screen and no one seemed to notice. Then y'all let him get so big for his britches he wrote Malcolm & Marie. I really hated how the internet just let a movie about the struggles of a black artist and a black couple written but only a white man skate by. I totally agree that Levinson adds sexually explicit writing in his shows when it doesn’t necessarily add to the plot. I don’t think the Maddy “pretending” she didn’t hookup with a guy to make Nate jealous was a bad idea. Throughout the show these characters make undeniably reckless decisions, but we as the audience are able to see the consequences of them. Maddy selfishly lied about that situation and an innocent guys life was ruined. We also see how Cassie’s constant need for male validation leads her down a path of betrayal to her closets friend. He has some really cool ideas that have the potential for a great story. I think where he goes wrong is he uses an absurd amount of nudity to attract viewers rather than solely relying on good writing.

As much as I love the weeknds art he is a literal narcissist. Go listen to any song off trilogy and it screams I mentally abuse women to get what I want. He’s literally playing that out in this show. The topics are very real and definitely need to be addressed however there is a way to go about it without it just becoming unnecessary. If you can remove a sex/nude/violent scene from a piece of media and it doesn’t affect the overall story, then it’s unnecessary. There were sooooo many unnecessary scenes in the first episode, regardless of how artistic it is. It was giving me major blonde vibes. Cinematography wise it’s amazing but the way the story is being approached is interesting to say the least, especially the way the script has been written. A large portion of his audience are younger and hearing things along the lines of I like the fact a man is rapey is terrible, even more so when worded like that

@@faevalentine9187 honestly when I was a teenager I knew no better and thought it was great. The birds hes mentally abused a woman he’s seeing but dismisses it with the fact he’s broken, then cheats on her and actually has the audacity to say ‘I told you not to fall for a n*gga like me’….. then his music videos where he’s clearly referencing his exs, and the live performance with his ex crying on a voicemail is played out loud. This man is a top tier narcissist bordering sociopath. I honestly found it so funny when I read he’s playing a cult leader who manipulates a pop star, and then I read that he thought the original story was too feminist centred and about the female lead, and should focus more on the exploitation of pop stars. Even if her life was like that, we as the audience didn’t need to feel like we were there watching her abuse play out. The way directors to this to make the audience almost feel complicit completely desensitises the viewer. Blondes plot was soooo bizarre, even more so because it’s based on a fictional book. The funny thing is, it's just generic porn brained narcissism from both of them. It's not edgy or shocking, it's just the same old run of the mill degenerate fantasies shared by every other porn addict. Sam and Abel are just using their position as cultural influencers to aestheticize and normalize their personal kinks. That's the goal. It's not art, it's propaganda designed to convince women to have the type of harmful, pornified sex they want with them. These shows are supposed to teach girls everyone sends nudes, anal is pleasurable for women, being choked by your partner is hot and romantic. Blah blah blah. It lures in teenagers with a glossy sheen and celebrity cameos, and pretends to be portraying "real life". But it's just grooming, really. "This is sex, this is the adult world, better make yourselves comfortable with it, girls! Remember, nothing's hotter than when YOU want it, so he doesn't have to be a creep and ask you! (And it'll be harder to make people care if it goes wrong. Huh.)" And as we see with Euphoria, a generation of wannabe Cool Girls will buy right into it and happily objectify themselves for the male gaze. They've been so brainwashed by sex positivity, hookup culture and choice feminism, they can't see what's wrong with it, or how they're being used to further the agenda of two Hollywood sleazeballs we will all have to pretend to be shocked over when they are inevitably exposed as sexual predators in five years time. When are we as a society going to stop worshipping obvious creeps like this as auteurs? Are we really so wowed by pretentious filmmaking and the same predictable collection of fetishes? Stop handing these guys power, ffs.

I hate the “you just don’t understand their vision” argument. Like the Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde, I know what the director is doing, but I also think torturing a woman for almost 3 hours is not an interesting thing to watch. “See how sad her life was? Let’s add more things that didn’t really happen to abuse her even more!” We all know Hollywood sexualizes women and full of creeps that will take advantage of people. But if the show is a serious of raunchy shots of women’s body parts, it’s using lampshading to do the exact thing it’s supposed to be criticizing. That quote in the RS article says it all, “It’s become the thing it’s satirizing.”

About Sam Levinson's tendency to nudity: Kennie Jd actually said one thing on a video about Euphoria and i quote "you can't just do things for the sake of being 'real'. Like, everybody shower naked. But u don't have to actually show someone naked in the shower for the audience to know they showered. U know what i mean? U dont have to show n*pples or the genitalia, you CHOOSE to do so. And in Sam's case, as well as most of the portrayals of nudity in the media, is useless. It doesn't add anything to the story, it doesn't actually play into portraying the character. (For example: if she's free spirited and all that, doesn't realise she's being exploitaded, a better way to convey that sense of "oh i dont mind nudity i am comfortable with it" would be her not minding about the picture that much, UNTIL she sees the actual results in her career and repercussions of it online, and be "OH. People are being sexist to me and all because of that f*cking picture." It would have more depth than just getting her naked all the the time. Its such a lazy way (not to mention problematic) to portray that. Same thing with Euphoria (and there its even more concerning and yikes because they're portraying TEENAGERS and that's disgusting, even if the actors are 25 years old). All of Sam Levinson's work falls into this abyss of "oh but its the reality, his shows are genuine and REAL". Like, does he actually need to be so graphic about Tedros being so fucking disgusting and r*pey to say "well, be careful ladies, because this is our r*pe culture in society and u must be careful and we must fight it"???? Like, do we really think this is it?

I personally think that the offensive elements in the show isn't the main thing that makes it bad, it is that THE SHOW IS SO DAMN BORING! The only watchable non-boring parts in the first episode is the conversations/dialogue among Jocelyn's team themselves - they bounce off each other well, and it actually feels realistic. The other parts of the show feels like there is no substance to it, no plot, no purpose, just a long, boring, beautifully-shot music video.

The viewership ratings increased knowing that Jennie is really putting herself out there in a role she's not used to portraying onscreen. My most optimistic, good-faith hope for this show would be that all the grossness of the first episode is being set up to actually show Jocelyn as a victim and to show her psychological state. That all the oversexualiation is on purpose to show how mistreated women are in the industry. But... yeah some of the lines are really bad and don't support that good-faith reading. I feel like the show has a semi good meaning, I enjoy the parts where it shows Jocelyn struggling, and her team taken advantage of her despite how mentally unwell she is because it displays the reality of the industry and what a lot of artists go through, but to me, the worse parts of the episodes are when The Weeknd’s character comes on. Like I don’t think he adds anything to the plot, in fact he ruins it and cheapens the story. I think this could’ve been a really heavy and deep show without all of the unnecessary weird porno stuff. And I think they could’ve really touched on the way the industry does things without the whole cult storyline. To me it’s extra and adds nothing. I can tell The Weeknd wanted to be a main character but in all reality it takes away from the plot. This is just my opinion! And I say that as a Weeknd Stan.

And yet they still released it. There are ways to talk about the dark spaces of life without getting all rapey about it and there are even ways to tackle and talk about the sexualization and romanticizing of mental health issues without coming off, again rapey and creepy.

The comment about intimacy coordinates made it seem like Sam has a beef with intimacy coordinator. In the podcast the watch they said it was def a call out to Sydney sweetie. I didn’t watch the full episode after the mental Illness comment

I know Hollywood is very dark and the people behind the scenes are shady. The plot sounds promising but I don’t think you need to be so vulgar to make your point. You can be suggestive and it can be just as effective.

My sister and I were like did you watch the idol it's horrible. She was like yeah I'm still gonna watch it though.😂 I can't help but wonder if they new it would be ridiculous enough for people to still tune in so they can make fun of it. It's a genius plan either way.

im not gonna try or pretend to know everything. i havent watched this film and euphoria and i started to type this even one minute after your video started. im not surprised at all and actually it numbs me i feel a bit “apathetic” bc ive seen many stories especially articles and docs about hollywoof works. what the director put out there in his work is probably a portrayal of what would happen irl (or his fantasy) and its juts funny to me that people are surprised about abel’s performance when all of his music reputation precedes him

Abel Tesfaye, a man, saying that show has too much female gaze....(what i mean is he's seeing things in male lense, what does he know abt female gaze?) Also the fact that this show is showing the dark side of Hollywood with a female being the mc and the writers of the show are men? What do they now abt what women in hollywood go thru? its literally sooo different ....all these just made me wonder if theweeknd is a pimp in real life......

Zendaya is the co -producer of Euphoria why she's okay with that shit on Euphoria ? Sam is even her friend. She's feminist or not ? I side -eye her now. And she loves to say that she's rooting for black women but in this show i see barely a dark skin principal actress. (sorry for my english)

they obviously using jennie for publicity cuz for one blackpink have a huge fanbase plus jennie herself has a lot of fans, also as a non blink myself i love that she's making her debut as an actor i just wished she chose another work i mean you go girl but they're just using her to get views and i find it really disrespectfull since she's more famous than a lot of people that appeared on the show

I only knew of this show because BLINKS were going insane over Jennie being in this series; didn't undestand why they hated the idea until I heard Sam Levinson's name and I was like "ah. that's why..."

The show is basically a car crash that I can’t keep my eyes off even though I don’t want to see it …like it’s so icky at times but I still want to know what happens next. Hopefully it gets better but honestly it’s just a well shot mess

People are really saying “it’s just the first episode” but look at how much of a mess it already is, lacks substance as I expected & the script is just atrocious and cringe which makes it so hard to even care about any of the characters.

I just have to laugh at the panel session where Sam said ‘I think we have the hit of the summer’ after his wife showed him that critics were being negative about the show. Yeah… In some causes critics being critical of media and books does cause people to check out what is controversial. And other times, the critics are just humans letting us all know ‘we took the hit to our eyeballs so you don’t have to, it’s bad’.

Over gratuitous media can be really interesting however it should be ‘niche’ as opposed to broadcasted on TV because the reality is it then becomes accessible to EVERYONE. Do teenage girls and boys really need to see kinks take place in front of them, or women talking about liking predatory men. No.
