Fun fact, this show was filmed primarily at the University of Cape Town in 2019, when I was attending the institution. I was a doing an Honours in Directing course, and was ironically a tutor to the second year acting students. One of which is the main character of the show! The insane thing is that I had first seen her perform at the beginning of the year, for a class test, and thought "She's got talent, she's got that thing". And then a few months later, I see a film set on campus all the time, a bunch of high school kids in uniform, but I didn't know that it was a show, I thought it was a movie. Halfway through the year, the main character girl (i really forgot her name, apologies), disappears from class, I stop seeing her on campus. 2020 pops around and they're teasing the upcoming release of Blood & Water, and I see her in the trailer. I'm like "Oh my god, the fuck? When did she audition for this? This is what they were filming? This is why she disappeared! Damn, had I known about the auditions for this show! But power to you girl, congratulations! Damn! Halfway through your acting course, and you snag this, yes girl!" Life is crazy : )

KB can't rap to save his life....My God, he's horrible. Wendy is such a hater. She always want the spotlight instead of focusing on making her activism authentic. I want to like her, but what she does at the end pushes my hate for her over the top. Does anyone think she's in love with her best friend? I hope that becomes apart of her storyline. Chad deserves prison for messing around with Filkile. I hated the way the Headmaster dealt with that situation putting it all on Fikile. The reason this story is different because most of South Africa is black and while they have a huge race problem; black people have always been the majority. Colorism does exist in SA; however, South African people have not dealt with centuries of slavery and it's effects seen in the US society. Therefore, SA experience each other as human first before black. They don't put oppressive stereotypes on each other and immobilize each other. As a result, we see stories like this. To American black viewers, it's strange. However to South Africans, other Continental Africans, black West Indians, West Indians in general etc.: this is normal. They experience their own people as people capable of diverse stories.

This is by far the best review for Blood & Water! The honorable mention of Puleng's horrible Detective skills had me cracking up! I felt the same way! Can't wait for Season 2.

This has quickly become my favorite show! I’m obsessed with the characters and the story!! I love the different representation and the fact that not all of the characters are super toxic and annoying. The story is fast paced and unpredictable and very well acted. Plus the actors are so pretty ☺️

Having lived in South Africa when I discovered this show, I can tell you that keeping secrets is a very African thing. Especially family secrets. It's very problematic, yet quite pervasive.
@njml41783 жыл бұрын
Just to add, we don’t superimpose biracial girls as black girls. Black is unambiguous in Africa and biracial is biracial.
@seivorsichtig3 жыл бұрын
Also what most don't know, the show is actually based on a true story. There was a case where a South African girl found out her high school friend was actually her lost sister.

A lot of High school students don’t really like talking out their issues, just gossip and more gossip...and so it becomes a big deal. Also she realized, that the secret is bigger than her, a lot of illegal stuff going down.
@lolhi96633 жыл бұрын
Well i dont think there are gonna put Puleng and Wade as endgame because Wade know her and KB are going strong i guess. And if they did put them back together it would be weird or feel forced.

The unique thing about this teen drama is that it's actually loosely based on a true story of Zephany Nurse!

I watched it when it first came out. Loved the whole thing! You’re so right, it doesn’t focus on the things American media touches on when it’s a black cast. I didn’t really notice Becos I don’t deeply think when I’m watching shows. I really enjoyed the storyline and the mystery!

I loved this show because of the beautiful dark skinned women and their teen drama but revolving around race, guns, drugs, and being poor. Check out Selah and the Spades. It came out last year about black boarding school kids.

All the positives you mentions are precisely the reasons why I like the show so much. It really was refreshing to just see black teens be teens. Nothing specifically about race. American media could never... I can’t wait for season 2

Thanks for addressing the whole Black Trauma in Film topic. At this point I love watching African shows and films on Netflix, South African specifically because I simply cannot stand watching the same "black" stories again and again. Also I like to check who the directors of a show are, I loved seeing that majority of the people behind Blood & Water are black and not white South Africans. Coming from a black/mixed race German btw

Great review. You've just gained a new subscriber. I really enjoyed Blood & Water, and can't wait for season 2. Lmao about the bit about their music collaboration; just to add on, the actual rapper & singer were Nasty C (the other guy that was in that scene with them) and Rowlene. They are two amazing artists from SA (South Africa) that I'd like to recommend people to check out. I look forward to future contents from you.

Okay hi I'm Anne and imma kinda explain what happened in that raping scene. So the other guy that was there helping them record the song is actually Nasty C and he is a huge artist in South Africa. The song is actually his and featured by someone else. And they used the song in the show that is why it sounds so different. Oh and this is also me sending love from South Africa.

Appreciate it. Yeah you're right.

Yeah but we shouldn't know as the audience that the song is not the original, we shouldn't know that's Rowlene. It was too obvious that's it's not Puleng singing and Kb can't rap to save his life yoh! 😭😭😭

The reason why it was only 6 episodes is Netflixes fault. Every time they have an African show they don't want to invest too much money just incase it flops. We always get like 6 episodes for the first season.

FYI this is actually based on a true story. A baby was kidnapped from the hospital. Later her sibling who went to the same school recognized that they looked similar & the girl was born in the same year. Unfortunately this story doesn't have a happy ending cause the kidnapped sister is still supporting her kidnapper & want nothing to do with her bio mom. She has a frought relationship with her bio dad. She refers to her real parents as " those ppl". It hurts my heart whenever I hear her In interviews calling them that even though I know the whole situation must be very traumatizing to her. The only parent she has known is now in prison.

I think Puleng was right not to tell Fikile earlier. My thought was that even though Fikile is the victim of the child trafficking, her parents might have told her later and maybe she was on board with it. In this scenario it would have been really dangerous for Puleng to bring it up

I do agree with a lot of what was said about the show and I also agree that the drama in the school could have been handled and written differently. But I also think that we're forgetting that these are teenagers and we're viewing them with an adult lens. Even though teenagers believe that they are smart and wise, they tend to be more overdramatic at times and very childish. The way that the drama was handled in the school encompasses that. As for the show itself I also agree that it felt rushed, but honestly speaking I can't wait for the next season🤞🏼😁

Please watch Kings of Joburg. Its another South African Netflix series. I'm really interested in what you'll have to say on it. They speak a lot of our South African languages, but there's a good balance between those languages and English.
