They have a PTR open for their Vanilla > TBC > WoTLK server, and Warmane has been around for almost 15 years I think or longer, their servers are never empty. It depends on the private server, imo, I don't think it's a stupid idea. I'm new to WoW myself and I love Classic never got to experience the progression and I would love to experience a full progression through expansions.

i think Hardcore, and the ressurgence of classic era servers in general comes from the fact that people realized that's the one and only iteration of WoW where leveling matters, meanwhile in subsequent expansions leveling basically becomes a chore because it's both longer and not the focus, which is why heirlooms exist and xp nerfs exist.

not to mention it was really more of an rpg, leveling skills, needing to have totems in the inventory as a shaman etc. Many examples that the vanilla wow world design was better in so many ways, not to mention classes actually are different. Now a days every class has a cc, every class has a slow, every class has a stun. No class feels that much different.

I don't think having CC and maybe one healing ability on each spec is the one thing that makes them similar but rather the feel of how they play and their rotations and so on. Hard to find a unique niche for a class/spec when there's like what 35+ specs in the game..

My guild eventually gave me the pass for not needing world buffs, since I'd usually accidentally blow something up for like 5 - 10k burst out of nowhere, I got 1 shotted 5ish minutes into the raid every time. 😂

What about three servers, one for each expansion locked in the expansion they got. You can create a char on every server but if you feel like heading from classic to tbc, you speak to an NPC and the char gets transfered to the next server. You cant go back, but you can go to wotlk-server from this point. The only problem i see with this, is stable guilds, but otherwise, you can take your time, go raiding and when you feel tbc looks nice now, just go to the next. You don't like tbc, jump to wotlk. I bet there would enough players on every server, that only want to play this expansion especially, so there not empty. But you have to live with people who are fully geared, at the time you arrive.

Started playing WoW mid Vanilla after I slept over my buddies house and saw him playing it. I was so fascinated with the games graphics and imagery. He was open world PvPing in the Eastern Plaguelands as a maxed out Lvl60 Undead Warlock. I went and bought WoW the next day. I stopped playing during MoP. I think about this game all the time 😭 I want to get a PC just to play it again. No other game has given me as much satisfaction as WoW did.

Reading the comments here and playing the game made me realise that there are a TON of people who'd love to have free time to play but are busy with life and that's okay of course as we have grown up but I gotta tell you guys that I'm pretty happy to see that we will be the first generation that will be crushing raids in our old days when we are retired and don't have much to do. "instead of doing expansions again" is the key point here, the issue with retail wow is the constant resetting of progress and introduction of powercreep that basically invalidated all the time you have put previous to that point, there's a reason WOTLK was the first time wow stagnated and that was because people were burnt out and sick of feeling like all these items they worked for are now basically worthless, raiding also became a loot piñata. if and when they decide to do classic+ i really really hope they don't go down the same path again.

This! What made classic so great, is that gear from each tier could work in the next phase, or even the whole game. I feel like in Wotlk, all the gear I worked "hard" for in phase 1 was like greens and not worth anything at all. In classic you could carry druid tier 2 into Naxx and be very successful if allowed to rejuvenate people. Even tier 1 three-piece to buff thorns if you min-maxed enough.

So true. Originally, end-game loot felt impactful and memorable because getting an upgrade was so rare. I hate how it has become a loot treadmill. The power-creep too makes the open-world feel like a joke. There is no sense of danger or adventure. You practically have to pull half the zone before you could die in combat.

@@mckeznak I think they are, the well majority of changes in the Classics and now with hardcore have been great. Yea now they have the fucking token and adding LFD, but almost everything they've done has been great. They busted boosting, put lockouts on dungeons in HC, they understand the community aspect and explicitly said their main pillar is community. As long as they keep the leveling difficulty and combat(non homogenized classes) true to Classic and they center their design around strengthening community, there's no way they can fail as an MMORPG.

Back on Vanilla Classic servers having a great time grinding out that old school character progression. Guild has almost a thousand members, SW was packed for Ony Buff with a literal griffon chain afterwards that lasted nearly a full minute of departing players freshly buffed. It is glorious.

the balance in vanilla spans over leveling, raiding and pvp. the game is balanced even though every class cannot be top dps. making druids better for example is not the solution that will make people happy. I actually think that, for example, making mages worse is a better attempt at balancing since they excel at all three categories of play. I also think that if they choose to balance vanilla, they should only make the world more difficult, and again, not alter any particular class or ability. Perhaps through manipulation of the games environment there can be new reasons to play classes who do less dps.

I gotta say having some really odd, interesting and powerful items in places you wouldn't expect is something I like about the game. Having other parts than the high level areas be relevant for these kinds of reasons makes the world more interesting. It gives you the feeling that you could randomly stumble upon something that could be really helpful, even much later in the game. Back then only a few people would even know about some of these items. Obviously nowadays all that knowledge is much more readily available, but I still think it's fun. I remember randomly finding the magic dust when I played classic without knowing about it prior and reading the effect and having that "no way this item is that good"-moment was really cool.

I also loved that some prebis and BiS items were obtainable and equippable before level cap. It helps give that feeling that leveling is actually building your character for endgame, not just a roadblock in the way of endgame.

At this point, with so much happening in Classic, I feel it's kinda of silly that we don't have TBC servers. It's the only Classic version that is not available. I feel that people would enjoy it much more for what it is this time around, as during its official re-release it ended up being a WotLK waiting room.

I'm new in classic and now playing hc (only played shadowlands) each class feels different and even if you are weak you can always get engineer ,place dummies, buy swiftness potions.. you have tools to make your survival to 60 more likely to be achieved. I'm not doing dungeons bc I never played them once and I would feel bad if someone dies bc of my incompetence, I would love to do them in vanilla but not in hc. I'm having a blast and I love that people help each other doing elites or hard quests. Probably going to jump and play vanilla after my hc adventures 😅

Im having a blast playing all the expansions again, and the big part of it is my guild. We had one big guild meeting in 2022 where 25 ppl showed up and it was amazing. As for the expansions itself i would say the should have made dual spac much earlier, Second in tbc rework group and raidbuffs. And third in Wotlk rework caster/healer items.

I think this is SUCH an important point that gets overlooked. Your guild is your life line. I had TERRIBLE luck in Vanilla with my IRL friends all fizzling out pretty early. Then Id find guilds that were awesome, but would fall apart quickly until finally found one I loved through Aq40 and Naxx. Then they disbanded due to some petty bullshit and I was left alone again in TBC. Found an awesome guild for Kara and TK and SSC, but the difficulty of those last 2 broke the guild, and many quit, or left. I floated for Hyjal and Black Temple doing PuGs. Then Wrath hit and I FINALLY foubd the right group of players that were the right mixture of "clear coms" and lets have a good time and we've been solid since Naxx. Its reinvigorated my entire playing experience in WoW, and they have become my buds. I just wish we had formed in Vanilla

TBC was just Vanilla but made by people who actually cared about making the classes even a little bit comparably powerful. Wrath was the start of "everyone has to have every skill" and slid back into the class imbalance thing hard. TBC was so good, IDK why its not the most popular version by a landslide.

Because it's in the middle of Vanilla and WotLK and doesn't trump either of them in the things they're best at. Vanilla is best at giving the player the feeling they're running around in an alive world and giving them the feeling even the littlest thing matters, while WotLK is best at giving players actual more interesting class gameplay opposed to the myriad of one-button rotations that Vanilla, AND TBC, are known for. So if you're someone looking for a world that feels like it's alive and like it matters you will play Vanilla. If you're someone looking for actual fun mechanical gameplay you will play WotLK. TBC unfortunately offers watered down versions of both of them which is why it's less popular than Vanilla or WotLK since currently both of them are accessible to players. A truly perfect oldschool version of WoW would be Vanilla but with WotLK class rotations.

TBC could also be fairly demanding in terms of getting attuned for raiding. Not that classic didn't have it too but it really ramped up for TBC. So it can be a big commitment to make progress.

TBC is not "just vanilla" dude. Completely nerfs the entire open world by buffing your talents and removing elite quests, far more focus on the endgame grind. That's why it's not popular. You don't need a group for anything. No player interdependence. Singleplayer game.

Hardcore breaths new life into the Classic Experience... It puts so much more tension into every fight, every dungeon, every boss encounter. everything is High stakes, and one wrong move can literally be the end of your character... its amazing! They can EASILY turn this Hard Core into a "Seasonal" run... full wipes at the end of the season, and Ultra Rare Mounts for the Top Player(s) Thus giving those truly gifted heros a status symbol they deserve. I get that Hardcore isnt for everyone, but I find myself ready to drop a sub to play it after watching it some. A chance to be that rare hero who doesnt die, Raiding with the HIGHEST of stakes, to get that special loot that most never see because they are too afraid to delve the depths and risk death.

The economy regulates itself by people dying with gear and gold, farmers die, it's preeeeettttty much fine for the most part. And have you checked the price of gold on HC, it's fkn expensive even a month later, like a dollar for 3 gold. 20 bucks to buy 1 great blue on the AH lol. If someone wants to spend 25 fucking dollars on 1 blue they're going to replace in 7 levels max that gives them like a 5% max increase in stats, then fucking go for it, dumbasses. 99% of people ain't got that kind of money or aren't stupid enough to spend it like that.

I've been hanging in there to kill Arthas since I found out we were getting TBC (bc of course Wrath would follow). I just quit raiding after BG3 dropped, though. I realized I wasn't having fun in WoW anymore - just chasing gear on solved fights. I rememberd that games can being me real joy. I lost the joy of WoW somewhere in the raiding progression, probably bc my guild has become grumpy. Cheers to everyone still enjoying raiding, though.

I loved cata but i do hope they leave wrath servers up. I'm a bit of a chronic alt maker and being stuck with cata leveling zones for years before classic servers came in really makes me hope to never see the original zones inaccessible again. Ever since they started using bronze dragons to allow different versions of zones to exist at once in retail I've hoped for the return of classic zones (but yeah so long as theres always some version of pre cata up I'll be happy).

After dying at lvl 25 in hardcore and quitting, i started on whitemane us and im lvl 50 have the most fun in wow since i first started in 2005 as a kid. Its slow but i enjoy the dungeons (can find groups at all hours)

If I remember correctly, Dragon soul isn't a bad raid besides the let down of the final fight with Deathwing. The biggest problem I can recall with cataclysm and MoP was content cadence; with blizzard diverting too many resources into revamping the old world and putting out fires with rebalancing classes constantly. In classic I feel like this is largely solved, since the content is already made, blizzard will likely skip the infamous content droughts that plagued the final patches of the next few expansions and potentially focus on making tweaks to adjust the game for modern players. love the work you do, cheers.

It wasn't 'THAT' bad, but it did drag on for far too long. The Deathwing fight was disappointing sure, but the biggest let down was that it dragged on for an entire year, with nothing but Dragonsoul. By this point in Cata, the HC dungeons had already been nerfed to the ground and were heavily outgeared so they weren't even worth it, and the hour of Twilight dungeons sucked too (Not you Well of Eternity, you were a fun little dungeon)

@@DisgustedAsmon unironically if they condensed the 3 raids of WoD to release in the span of a year it would be a good time. What dribbles of content WoD had, it was pretty solid. I can imagine by 2030 (if wow is still relevant then) wow classic will catch up to retail since they're going through content at double speed.

To each their own. I've done Classic. I've done TBC. Doing Wrath now. I'm not going back to any Era any time soon. Why? We just did this for 4 years straight. Also, a lot of people have invested a lot of time and effort into their toons. I certainly don't want my 100 mount achieve to get deleted next year. I look forward to Cataclysm and I've been playing on a private server for past 3 weeks now. And I absolutely love it. Gameplay wise, it's very similar to Wrath. Cata is closer to Wrath than Wrath to TBC or to Vanilla.

As a vanilla enjoyer from the start (I quit retail during original TBC), I'm glad there's so many people realizing how great vanilla was and what made it so different from expansions, even though it's been bashed throughout the years for how unbalanced and slow paced it was. It was rough around the edges, asymmetrical, slow and that's actually what made it rewarding. There was no obvious questing route, it took you all over the place and traveling was an undertaking in of itself that had to be planed. It really did put the 'World' in 'World of Warcraft'. Since TBC everything felt like a on-the-rails theme park. Pretty colorful zones, balanced factions, flying mounts, guided questing routes with plethora of rewards. Go to a questing hub, pick up a bunch of quests, finish them, get a bunch of items, move on to this next questing hub, etc etc. Leveling felt like a mindless chore you had to do to get to the endgame, even though it was much shorter than vanilla.

It was surprising to me that you need to level skills in vanilla. Modern WOW has too many system interactions replacing world interactions. You needed to go buy spell books, train on a weapon... These may sound boring, but they pile up to build a narrative that doesn't exist now. Your growth is highlighted when you have to do these things. These details were missing when I started playing, so I never managed to enjoy the game as much. IF your leveling is an empty achievement, then why would you even bother to carry on in end game and beat everything the game offers? There is no investment and there is no desire to see things through when the leveling is just an empty shell with an overblown story. If an MMO doesn't make me want to rip the throat of their raid bosses almost as if it were personal, then it failed already. It's similar to the sunk time fallacy, but in a good way. If the MMO can't make me WANT to waste my time to achieve the endgame goals, then it failed.

Vanilla was great, the leveling experience was great, but nowadays investing 150+hs just to level your character is a bit too much. I always thought that every new xpac that blizzard releases should have 10-12 hours of leveling, but making the new zone/world/whatever harder, and not just a walk in the park while killing 20 mobs and not losing any hp in the process. I wish it was a good mix of Vanilla feeling of danger while walking towards a new zone, looting a green and feeling excited for your +2 int gloves, with the gameplay and challenges that comes with the newest expansions.

​@@gabochoxUT They need to make the leveling experience cohesive. Their current idea is not bad, but the foundation is shit. Right now you can choose an exp pack to level up with. The problem is that the entire game is already corrupted by the "convenience" stuff that made the game feel soulless. Classes have almost no identity, no real downside and uniqueness to them. Just look how warlock plays in classic, it's crazy interesting. Leveling skills and other progression stuff need to come back. Having a quest to unlock a skill or minion needs to come back. It adds to the roleplay and makes you feel like your character is advancing. How can we feel more powerful if we get a skill just by leveling? There is no solution if they don't change the foundation and bring it back to classic in several aspects. Make leveling interesting. Then they should make the progression from endgame to a new expansion feel more like a continuation of the leveling experience you had before. They could add changes to the classes and instead of just pushing them, they could add them as progression. For example, if they had the kind of system from vanilla where you learn certain skills through quests, why not make it so you go through quests while leveling to upgrade your skills? That would help a lot with the feeling that you grow weaker while leveling. To quote one of the best movies from the 90s: "Something given has no value.". If you earn your boost in power through active effort you will have a better feeling of accomplishment. Leveling is boring because there is no accomplishment while leveling in wow. As for the length of the leveling, look at the other games in the genre. GW2 has around 100 hours of leveling. You can always rush, but we should look at the average player. You can speed level in lost ark and get 15 hours but you will still have more than half of the story to play through. This kind of speed run would make you backtrack later so it's not good. The game has the endgame start in the middle of the campaign so it's a bit of an odd one. How about wow's biggest competitor? Final Fantasy 14 has hundreds of hours of content if you are playing through the story. You could probably rush and be done in 80-100 hours but FF14 is brilliant in the way they do classes. Instead of doing the entire story to level one class you can switch to a new class and continue the story because all classes (jobs) can be learned by the same character. This makes the leveling experience dynamic and interesting, and it removes the need for alts. You reach lvl 50 in your first job and sudently you can become a badass death knight and keep going with the story. That's so good. Even someone who skips through the story can have fun leveling in ff14 when compared to wow. There is another aspect of FF14 that makes me worried for the future of wow. You can put literally hundreds of hours in the demo version of FF14 before you feel even the slightest need to buy the game and start paying sub. This is a huge thing. If you like the game, you will start paying the sub and you will thank them for it. They let you learn almost the entire game and go through a lot of content, including most classes. Imagine if wow had their trial version go up to level 50 and let you do the content of most early expansions? It would be great for the game.

Try focusing less on your min-maxing, less on your addons, less on your "optimal leveling route" and focus more on the world and OTHER players for a change. I often just wander around duskwood or elwynn forest and help other players out even when it doesn't benefit my leveling progression because (get this) IT'S FUN! It's fun to shoot the shit with other people and possibly roleplay a bit. Or are you too busy in your discord channel while playing? If you don't enjoy Vanilla WoW as it is, then you are NOT the target audience, and this genre is NOT for you. Sorry not sorry.

I mean that what's seasons are for. I suspect some sort of change is gonna happen for the next season. Might not be a change to all classes but changing certain items would already change a lot. If Ret had a dedicated max level set, the class would be way better. Or if Feral Druid had a weapon as BiS that wasn't from Gnomeregan it would be way better too. At the same time we have weapons in the raids that are basically useless. So changing items would be the easiest fix while being relatively small impact on actual mechanics.

They can improve a lot of the imbalance indirectly with itemization, put lots of mp5 on leather/mail caster gear to help hybrids, feral weapons that give (more) bonus AP in forms like in TBC/wrath. Make tier set tokens you can turn in for your different specs instead of being locked into one set per class.

for classic + to be a thing, first and most important of all, they should bring TBC versions of talents into it. I think TBC is where the balance between classes was the most perfect. Not everyone could be top dps or top healing or the better tank, but each build could be played to some extent. Balance druids, shadow priests, shaman enhancement and elemental, retribution paladins, they all become viable without being top dps. Every class/spec had their job to be done, and it was clear. Also, professions on TBC were the best iteration ever on wow history.

Nah. TBC talents make leveling way too easy. They could tweak a few spces to be slightly better and add some actually relevant gear for those specs.. but even 1.12 talents make the game too easy.

@@QPoily In my opinion WOTLK got talents that stole the identity of each class/spec. With TBC we are in a spot where the 'meme' specs are viable and desired but not too good to replace the DPS specs. When i say this, its because in my mind makes all the sense the hybrid classes that want to dps, are support to the main dps classes, like mage, warlock, rogues and hunters.

To some degree, yes, but the cheesiest came from other changes that TBC made, like, less elites and elite quests in azeroth, best itemization from old items, and the 30% less XP required to lvl. But also WOTLK didn't steal the identity of each spec, it further fleshed it out, just because TBC talents were more balanced doesn't make that statement true. And it didn't homogenize classes. I think it's widely regarded that WOTLK was the best state for classes and talents.

@@slmmvi2788 Legendary drops were fine by the end of Legion. If they ship the game with the droprate and currency in place, it won't be a problem. I tanked the entirety of the first tier with a fury legendary belt due to bad luck. I also had spectacular luck with my fire mage. I still have a screen with me opening two chests I had and get the two best legendaries for the spec (belt and bracers iirc).

I kinda fudged myself in my classic journey, when classic launched I had leveled an undead mage and undead priest on Skeram, TBC classic launched and i transfered both toons to TBC without cloning them. Before i knew it , they had shut TBC servers down and switched them to WotLK while my guild was still progressing sunwell. Feeling lost, I decided not to play WotLK because those servers will be shut down too for Cata, went back to Vanilla and had to start my journey all over again. Currently level 52 human paladin on whitemane and Ive decided that Vanilla is hands down the best version of the game

I mean, what if they did a take on the dragon isles/Emerald Dream that's more like what they originally had planned? But there are some original employee left (Chris Metzen returned in 2022) But yeah, an important understanding that this is a niche market and should be considered volatile to tampering would need to be adopted. The ppl that made Turtle WoW kinda already figured this out, if their servers weren't jank and overflowing with the Chinese market demand it'd basically be what I'm talking about.

Blizzard should merge servers with low to medium-low populations across the eras and have a couple normal and hardcore servers for each expansion era. The most important thing is merging so people arent subjected to the dead server experience, which ruins the game for the most part

The easiest way to sort the LFR issue is to have 2 different loot tables on it. LFR can have it's loot table so the casuals can gear and get nice stuff, Guilds can go in and get different stuff with their mates. Non LFR raids should drop much better gear.

Honestly I have played every expansion besides Warlord of Draenor and WOW Classic HC is giving me the best feeling ever from all the expansions. I used to think that WOTLK was my favorite one which indeed was back in the day while I was one shotting people with Enh Shammy but Classic HC is something completely different. 1 benefit Blizzard has looking back at the history of WoW is to do thing different even just slightly. And it seems to work, as I have seen several statements saying that currently the playerbase for classic surpassed that of current WoW. I think this has always been true, but due to the nature of all consecutive expansions, we have all had tunnel vision regarding the acquisition of end game loot as fast as possible. Sad this happened but the expansions were designed that way... That is why for me and many others, FFXIV was also so popular. The journey is ultimately the reason why you want to play.

my hopium for whats next after Wotlk-classic is that either: make a season 5 similar to season 4 of shadowlands by scaling up all raid tiers to higher ilvls and loot as well (just a little bit) and add affixes to the raids to spice it up. Or option 2, move on to cataclysm but retain the current talent system, give us 5 more points and regulate / scale all content to compensate for power gain. Imagine the new builds that could open up potentially.

A lot of you will hate this idea, but... For those of us that love the social aspect of the game, I would LOVE to see a server where every open world mob is elite. It removes the ability to solo for the most part and makes every time you log in need to find a gang to quest with, which wouldn't be difficult given everyone else has to as well. Think of the kinds of friends, enemies, and dynamics you make in Vanilla dungeons and apply that to every inch of the open world.

Classic+ with High Elves and Ogres please. I want to play a High Elf mage and dance in SW in my underwear. On a serious note, HC Classic is an amazing experience. Nothing beats it. Wrath feels so boring because you dont feel the threat of dying. But I will say Wrath certainly had the best talents and I really loved the Fire Mage iteration in Wrath. It felt so good to do double Flamestrike into Blizzard and watch mobs melt. Of course, Living Bomb spam was also kind of boring but nothing can be perfect.

I am a full blown classic leveling Andy, so hardcore is heaven for me. the methodical and plodding nature of just checks a lot of boxes for me. I worry it will die out but it but I hope they evolve it, add SSF mode, PVP realms, etc.

The raiding and PvP in MoP was pretty good though, even if you didn't like the areas.

I need Wrath servers. My favorite part of WoW is leveling the different classes but i also like having somewhat balanced/interesting builds. My biggest complaint with Vanilla is that most of the classes are just damn boring to play, especially Paladin. I do love HC mode too but Wrath was the peak of the game for a reason too. I really hope they don't force Wrath players to move into Cata where the talent trees got crapped on.

You are absolutely right, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria are still my favourite expansions because thats when I got into the game and fell inlove with WoW. Please take us back even if they do a + version.

Ultimately the reason leveling became a chore instead of fun was because there were never enough players out in the world to make it enjoyable after a few months of the xpac being released. I think much of that could be solved by having full cross realm connections for everyone below level cap. And then restricted per server at Cap.

I expect Blizzard to actually finish content that was scrapped at this point. Give us the expansion as it was supposed to be, the Abyssal Maw raid, Path of the Titans, etc. Problem with Firelands and Dragon Soul were their size more than the raid themselves... 7 or 8 bosses was not enough, especially in Firelands where the difficulty curve was exponential. Also, to avoid LFR would mean to implement the "normal mode" earlier in the game than the end of MOP.. raiding was too hard for a lot of the player base once they made 10 man as hard as 25.

Vanilla will always be the greatest time period. Specs aren’t great, but the class feel is 100% present. Every class is unique. Every spec is different from the next. They should never change Vanilla.

I played a ret paladin in vanilla and it wasnt all that. Maybe thats why i have no nostalgia for the extremely long grinds

If they release Classic Cata, I'll certainly check it out, and for the exact reasons you stated. Cata is when I really got into the game, so there is a lot there for me. I do think they should keep Wrath servers live indefinitely though, as it scratches the "Classic" itch far better than anything else. Classic Vanilla is just too unfinished of a game to be enjoyable for me, so I'd love for them to keep Wrath open.

i started in cata officially, but have been playing since wotlk, and i will deffo say its nice there's more then just classic, im really enjoying tbc/wotlk servers. takes me back to when i started personally

You absolutely nailed it, I hit max level for the first time in cata and am really hoping they do end up saying they will continue through the other expansions. Would love to raid MoP and so on.
