This is ACTUAL criminal justice reform….. teaching people who tear down communities to build it back up. Good on them. I hope they learn how good it feels to do the right thing and save a life and they use how good of a feeling that is to walk the straight and narrow.

The only thing bad with it is they don’t pay you for your work it’s just another way to use you for the government fr. It could however be good for them like your saying but the sad truth is that’s not what they intend what they are doing is making money off the inmates in two sources now.

@ they aren’t forced to firefight…… maybe don’t be a f*** up and you wont be property of the state as an inmate. People voted on this as just treatment as punishment for a crime. If you don’t like it change it.

@@TheDudeWithEmpathy19473 It's effectively education. Rather than spending years sitting in a cell and hanging out on the prison yard, they are serving the community while learning a new career that will keep them out of prison in the future. I've worked with dozens of inmates who would give anything to have an opportunity such as this. They walk out of prison with their head high, having redeemed themselves in the eyes of the community they once betrayed. And they get to sleep in a comfy fire station rather that a 6 x 10 cell behind bars. Not a bad way to suffer the consequences of bad life choices.

I'm a firefighter in an area with inmate firefighters in Georgia, it surprises some people when I tell them I completely trust having them around and literally my life in their hands on occasion. They worked hard to get where they are and none of the ones ive ever met would even think about doing anything to jeopardize the opportunities and freedoms being an inmate firefighter has given them. They are always glad to be there and always ready to get in a situation and get dirty no matter whats happening or how bad it is. Some of the inmate firefighters I've worked with in my area have even gone on to make great careers in the fire service.

I remember working alongside inmate firefighters for the first time in the forest service, greatest group of firefighters I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Committed, never complained, did solid work and I could always trust them to have my back on the line. These programs I truly believe have saved lives that would otherwise be destroyed. Super unfortunate though that they get as much pushback as they do nationwide.

@@CyanoticFuture And for the safety of the community those offenders shouldn't be. But I bet there are in house programs that could be created where they could still serve their time, gain some dignity and pride, and turn their lives around. Like what if they were professionally trained as counselors and therapist for example. They could use their life experiences plus the counseling skills they learned to provide mental health and counseling to other offenders. Maybe they aren't getting out but could help someone who is to get their lives together and not end up back in prison. Taxpayers doesn't have to pay for therapy and if successful, saves money on reducing repeat offenders. That honestly just popped in my head but that's what I'm saying. If we could just come up with some ideas. IDK 🤷‍♂️ Maybe it's just wishful thinking.

That simply means their is no law specifically prohibiting them from being hired. It will still be up to each and every individual department to decide who they hire. So if it comes down to where it is between a qualified candidate without a record and one with a record ..the con has virtually no shot. ..well for a full time dept at least. There may be exceptions here and there sure...but not many. Most individual full time depts can and do still have policies preventing the hire of felons. Now as far as rural vol/ part time depts that likely are in need of manpower...yes...that is likely will a felon can be hired after their release

As a former Correctional Officer, I think having a program like would be beneficial to many areas... OBVIOUSLY you have to dig into the perspective inmates background and character to make sure they won't try to use the knowledge and tools to escape later. But if they are cleared and prove themselves by making it through the training, it gives them both a purpose, and job skills that would make them stand out above others searching for a job after their sentence. Most departments around me jump at the chance to hire candidates with prior experience...... From Lansing, Michigan. Wishing everyone (including the inmates working on the departments) a great weekend... Y'all stay safe out there.

I thought for a moment about how this could be taking jobs from others, but the lack of people working as firefighters makes it work. Then, they get skills to be "turn key ready" after they leave (hopefully they get hired/transferred at another station when they get out. I know it is hard if you have any criminal history). It's a step in the right direction, doesn't matter which party did or didn't do it.

Also, as mentioned in this video it is rural areas that utilize this..areas that rely on volunteers. So that will likely be the extent of their pursuits. So them pursuing a career afterwards in this field on a fulltime department will be futile for the majority of these folks, as while the state may have allowed the hiring of ndividuals with records, each and every single dept and municipality can..and likely do..still have ordinances and policies preventing the hiring of felons. The bottom line is if a department is faces between choosing between a candidate wirh a record and qualified one without a record...reality says 99% of the time the one without the felonious record will be hired. Because if it gets out to the public that a dept hired a ex felon over a qualified candidate without a record....like it or not that will likely be a PR nightmare without end.

These were my thoughts exactly. I understand that prison labor is a systemic issue, but it becomes even more egregious when they risk life and limb. I think it’s a great program, but just the ability to be a firefighter, in my opinion, is not enough compensation for what they’re doing. They will get out, they will be convicted felons, and every department they apply to in the future will shred their application without a thought.

I don’t think the pay is the issue. Firefighters have a very high on the job injury rate both short and long term injuries. If one of the inmates receives a life changing disabling injury on the job then what happens. For most fire fighters they have disability insurance provided by the department. Typically 2/3 pay plus continued benefits. Are these fire fighters just SOL. When released will they have to go thru the struggle to get social security disability. I think the bare minimum that should happen is the inmate fire fighters receive market rate pay that’s then put into a group disability fund so if the receive a long term injury they will be taken care of

Are there some inmates/people/monsters out there that are unable to be rehabilitated, Yes....... Are there inmates/people that just screwed up and sometimes were never given a chance to succeed in life, Yes I'm 100% for this and also believe records should be expunged......

Problem is getting a job and your state certification when you get out. Most services disqualify felons.

Georgia altered the laws so that these men get state qualified training and may be hired after release. Many have continued on in the fire service post release too.

This is a good program. The goal of prison should be rehabilitation over punishment.

Imagine trying that with people before prison... America has to extract some slave labor before they'll help you.

THis is an excelent idea. Why not expand this programme to other emergency services, such as the police? /s, But for real I think this is a great idea. Its giving people who may need it a sense of direction and setting them on the right path while filling a vital role in the community.

Being a former C/O I like this idea, for qualifying detainees. They should be offered a position with full benefits and pensions when their time is up. If they screw then they lost that chance

Now THIS is what brings down re-offending rates in the country, not shoving them in a microcosm of the streets they were on before that reinforces the stuff they were doing before as positive actions. If we weren't so obsessed with the idea of treating all inmates like Satan and locking the door and throwing away the key as being "justice' then maybe our country wouldn't have such high crime. More of this in the justice system, please.
