It's not just in Bali but across Indonesia as well. I'm saying this as someone who was born and live in Indonesia for my entire life. Having mental illness is like a failure, and it brought shame to your own family if the neighbors know. You even have to hide when going to the psychiatric or else people will says bad things to you Most people in Indonesia don't take mental illness seriously, they would just say "you should be thankful for your economic condition right now. You have everything what could you possibly want more?" Or "that's because you don't have enough faith in allah/god" since we technically live in the biggest religious country so people will automatically connect it with religion. It seriously still hurts me till this day.i just wish somehow they will understand how painful mental illness is, i never received help after that and I don't want to receive help , it's better to deal with it alone lash out at yourself as long as i don't hurt other people...

I live in east Java Indonesia. One of my neighbors actually lived like this, he was locked for decades in a room hidden behind his family's house. only 50 meters from my house. I've heard him screaming, cursing, but sometimes he sang and praying beautifully (like in Islamic way). When I was a kid I asked people around me why was that man locked like that, they say "he's possessed by Jinn." He assaulted people and nearly kill someone in the past, when I grew up and learn about psychology I feel sorry for that man, and it makes me realize the roots of this kind of problem is education, most people here don't understand what mental illnesses are, they never actually think it's treatable. And I don't even live in a remote area, this is a regular city In Indonésia, and most of these people does not have awareness about mental health. Sadly that man passed away last year in that same cage. Yes mental hospital exist, but the society think people who went to that place is "permanently broken" , corrupted, and will never be normal again. That's why families choose to hide their child with mental health problem, they feel ashamed if someone in the family have this problem.

So sad to hear. But what good you gained so much insights. Yes education and trust is the key. Maybe they can offer in i hope the close future an treatment at first, or for a part or complete at home. I don't know internet is common in Indonesia, Bali, Java etc ? But maybe especially for this kind of situations they can teach the parents and offer some therapy and coaching via the internet if the distances are to big, when there's not much money for help at home. Or maybe they can learn how to put up more local hospitals and care / family community's with beautiful gardens (with an fence, and the possibility to go out (first with their prof helpers and family) more and more once they're healed) and enough care and security. I think the whole world must help each other with projects like this. We can change this step by step together. First Awareness, than aid so these kind of video's and discussions are very good. 💖🙏🏼✨

After living in Indonesia I can appreciate that although this looks horrendous, and it is, people don't do this out of malice but out of sheer desperation. They are incredibly poor, not well educated and tradition reigns strong. Instead of calling people animals and judging them from our own better living standards, try to at least understand, not necessarily accept or approve, that the reason this kind of thing happens is because the government could do so much better for their own people there if they weren't so corrupt. I hope one day things improve there. However, despite the tropical flowers and rich culture, I hated living there because these sights were unavoidable and left me with more bad memories than good.

I will say at least this village/community doesn’t just disown them and send them off on their own and are just doing what they know and think is right. I don’t personally think anything they are doing is out of harm or spite or even to be mean they just honestly don’t have options do they do what they can to keep others and the patients themselves safe. Your post was very insightful and makes people stop and think. You can also tell these people are very nice people they are just uneducated on many things especially mental health.

I also was saying that by comparison to the way the mentally ill are treated in the modern medical community in America, this is not as terrible as it first appears. Nobody really has the answers on how to help the mentally ill, least of all professionals. A PhD does not make you a useful or compassionate person, and neither does a blood relationship. So many people on here have no clue how they would behave if they were given the responsibility of caring for this man. The sad truth is that most of them would end up treating him the exact same way. Or maybe they would opt for a more sterile and clinical approach and just scramble his brain in an approved medical procedure. Either way, the treatment would ultimately be for easing their burden of keeping his physical body alive, and not for the healing of his mind.

Multi Dimensional - who said you’re supposed to trust at all? EDIT: ugh, I sound so cynical. But really, you shouldn’t trust what someone is saying by the expressions on their faces, anyway. I think my original comment was mostly my observation that pain can be seen in many forms. Having said all this, when I see a stranger walk by and they smile, I’ll assume the person is happy or maybe just polite. But when I see a man chained in a cage surrounded by his own shit and he cracks a smile or those defending his abuse crack a smile 🙄.... obviously the discrepancy is real.
@UlyaMaulida6 жыл бұрын
@Multi Dimensional Hannah is right we can't just trust people by their facial expressions, the chained guy might be actually happy that they finally find someone that actually wanting to talk to them, but their families well that one is pretty complicated, they might smile to be polite. And yes we don't define who we trust by their smiles it's more about what they said and how we feel about it, I still find it pretty complicated, that's why I don't trust so many people. Psychiatric meds should be cheap and given free of charge to those who can't afford one. Mental illness I think is worse than physical. I have a paranoid schizophrenic twin sister and even a day without her taking meds, she'd go freaking berserk with all the paranoia that we really fear for our own life. She takes multiple meds and they're all very expensive, not to mention the cost of paying to see the doctor every month. It upsets me how companies profit so much off of people's tragedy
@dihe13926 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good plan but they do need to pay the factory workers/chemist/managers/alot of people who studied really hard to make those medication..i think you want medication to be subsedize so that the government uses peoples tax money to pay the larger half of the medication because the medicine itself will always be expensive

You should be happy that there IS help for your sister! Imagine living in Bali or elsewhere that can't get hold of any help! The system that you are deriding allowed these medications and psychological therapy to be created! If we didn't have capitalism they surely would not exist. Is capitalism perfect? No... But it's by far the best system we could have! Nothing is for free, even in a communist or socialist style society! Someone pays, somehow! If not with time tokens (money) then with their actual time! It's just that capitalism is infinitely more efficient and freedom loving. Of course, your families situation is sad, but everybody has their problems!

Suriani is a very compassionate woman and I think she is very wise in using both, Eastern and Western medicine to treat her patients. I myself, had a very troubled youth and developed mental health problems including, depression, severe anxiety and OCD from a very early age. I spent half my adult life trying to find healing for my distressed spirit and, engaged in many different forms of psychological (and other holistic) therapies all of which, I found beneficial to some degree but never truly allowed me to move forward from my past and its associated trauma. I am so grateful to have finally found that healing in July of 2020 through a deep, shamanic, soul revival healing session and over a year or so following that experience, I was also, able to gradually withdraw my anti-psychotic medication (which, I had been on for 22 years, since the age of 15) and replace it for daily meditation. Prescription medications have their place when it comes to helping people overcome their mental health conditions (and are crucial to managing severe conditions like, Schizophrenia and Bipolar) but overall, it is healing for our soul that is needed to bring our minds back into balance and that recognition, is something that could greatly improve Western medicine in my opinion!

The poor thing died a slow and agonising death after kilometres of torment. I was shouting (and signalling)out the window for him to stop but he just looked at me like I was the one out of order. Wow! Great documentary. Great work. Congrats to Madam and Team. In my country, Sierra Leone in West Africa, mentally ill patients are often times left on their own. Lack of family care and sticking to assumptions (that the person is a drug addict or that it may be something spiritual) rather than laying premium on adequate treatment, endemic poverty, lack of education, lack of infrastructure and expertise, are the underlying factors. How I hope such could be replicated out here.

There are other ways to handle mental illnesses. I would suggest leaning on friends and family that motivates you. If you don't have a supportive family, find supportive friends. Try meditation and exercises. Focus on what you like to do. Catatonia by medication or electroshock therapy is never the answer. Medication strips away your freedom, speaking from experience. And electroshock therapy had traumatized patients at Judge Rotenberg Center. Two Christian conservative judges, David Sentelle and Gregory Katsas, overturned FDA's ban on electroshock therapy and Trump supports this torture. Unfortunately Christians demonized mental illnesses as "demonic possessions" which is why hardly anyone get the help they need. That is why I'm slightly agnostic than I care to admit. I still believe but not like Christians. But the treatment towards mental illnesses can get worse if people continue to ignore it. Now I have a video to wake people up.

@@LadyGreySpacePirate that's easy to say if your support network doesn't need to work 16 hours a day to just fund their household.
