I have always felt like Ray saying “I really, really hoped I wouldn’t die” -after his suicidal mindset the whole film- made it a happy ending. One of my favorite films.

This final line reminds me of the ending to Inception, as they’re both open endings that people misinterpret. So many people wonder whether Ray survived or whether Cobb was still dreaming, when the actual point of the scenes are something else entirely. It DOES NOT MATTER whether Cobb is still dreaming, because the point of the ending is to show that he doesn’t want to check his token anymore. Similarly, the point of In Bruges’ ending is that Ray, for the first time in the entire movie, is actively hoping he’ll survive. Whether or not he survives is beside the point, because the point is for him to finish his character arc of learning to appreciate life, which the final line shows you he’s done.

The writer Martin McDonagh once said in an interview about Bruges: "I went to Bruges by train from London for a couple days. I was just struck by how cinematic the place was, strange medieval gothic architecture and beautiful canals. By the middle of the second day I was bored out of my head because there’s not an awful lot to do apart from go to the churches and the museums. So I just wanted to get drunk or get laid. And that became two characters in my head, the culture lover and the drunken whore."

I'm a Canadian who lived in The Netherlands for many years and noticed how Belgium was often made fun of (country & people) by some of the Dutch. Whatever their issue was/is, I thought Belgium was unique & beautiful. In Bruges is one of my favourite films!

When Ken jumped off the tower, it was made so much more powerful by the use of Raglan Road, performed by Luke Kelly of The Dubliners. One of my all time favourite songs, it was originally a poem by Patrick Kavanagh. Luke Kelly turned it into something wonderful, though. Great reaction, love this film. Haven't seen In Bruges done before 👌

I've been to Bruges. Beautiful but a tourist trap. Take a day trip, look at the buildings, take a boat ride on a canal, a horse ride around the town square. No need to spend more than a day.

The producer of this film, made it out of his own experience with Bruges .. Part of him loved Bruges and part of him thought it was hell .. so that became the opinions of Ken and Ray .. His movie Three Billboards is also very good!

This film is a masterpiece. They manage to make you feel empathy for all of the characters at the same time for different reasons. And they all have valid reasons for their motivations too. Brilliant ending as well.

There's a deleted scene that takes places in the 70s where Ken's black wife is killed by an off duty cop (she was a prostitue) and Harry walks into the police station with a sword and decapitates him. Thats why Ken owes him and is in debt to him

As an American who had never really seen anything more than a couple of hundred years old, this place was “like a fairytale”. Go if you can. It’s worth it. I would also recommend visiting some of the places around the Bodensee in Southern Germany.

Bruges is lovely. I can also confirm the Bell Tower is very narrow and steep. I got about 90% of the way up before we were told it was too windy and we had to walk down again :(

Martin Mcdonagh is a brilliant and twisted filmmaker and playwright. I highly recommend both of his other movies, “Seven Psychopaths” and “Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri” for the channel. The latter features an amazing performance from Frances Mcdormand and won some major Oscars.

actually worked with these two , brendan and colin on banshees , really nice humble easy going guys .... colin is a gent and so chilled and interested in people , lot of time for him, so not what you would expect from a big movie star ... worked with quite a few movie stars and most keep to themselves ,its nice when all the crew get on and are chill without the ego and bullshit

There's a couple I know off which are similar Layercake Rocknrolla London Boulevard 4lions Now 4 lions is a bit different if your USA, basically the premis these little group of friends from Yorkshire England plan a terror attack , its 2 films in one really it shows how they get recruited an the brainwashing of them , but on other is the funniest movie I have ever seen , so it's serious but every so often there's a bit where it's just so funny , like there's one guy who's not even Pakistani an rest are and he's the most radical which made me chuckle , but he said "OK when we go outside shake your head cos it's anti surveillance so 3 of these guys are bobbleheading to the car 🤣

The movie, even though the story is as simple as it could be. The combination of the seriousness + going into a slight comedy or dark comedy and it reverting back to seriousness. And the little dialogues that you remember from start then finally it gets connected at the end. Is what makes this movie really good. Like for example when Harry said that we are all suicidal but we don't really talk about it. (all 3 of them thought of it, and 2 already did it). minus Ray since Ken stopped him. Then there is that principle mentioned by Harry which He uphold in the end. Ken's fascination in Christianity and 2nd chances which he gave to Ray. Really nice bit of writing and movie acting. You pick up stuff along the way and it all adds up right at the end!

"Why Belgium", you ask? It's Europe's usual punching bag because in most respects it's a very bland place without anything in particular to set it apart. That plus the old stereotype of Belgian alcoholism and depression. I personally like Belgium but I can see how playing into the stereotype can be funny in some situations, especially when contrasted with the beauty of cities like Brugge.

I found myself hitchhiking around Europe by my lonesome for a few weeks back in the 70's, when I was 15. I ended up spending the last week of the trip in Brugges -- in a little hostel / tavern / socialist printing shop called Snuffles. Charming, friendly town. Fond memories. Wonderful watching you discover this film. It's a unique little gem.

Re: What's the problem with Bruges. Martin McDonagh has said that the story is based off him visiting Bruges and equally loving it's beauty and architecture but also feeling like it was the most boring place ever. That's how the two characters were created in Ken and Ray then he added the absurdity of them being hitman having to hide out there.

Belgium is like the small sibling of Western Europe. The UK, France, The Netherlands and Germany all pick on Belgium but love it at the same time. It's seen as boring, but anyone who has been there knows it's just lovely. It's the small town equivalent of a country.

Belgium is a pretty new country. It was created to be a neutral area where Germany, France, and the Netherlands had been going to war with each other for centuries, right outside the UK's door. Didn't work though, since it still ended up as a primary battle ground in World War 1 and 2.

I can’t speak on behalf of other people, but as an Englishman, Belgium isn’t a particular hot spot for tourism, it’s mainly just a country one drives through to get to Amsterdam or Germany or France, or Spain.

There's no problem with Bruges or Belgium as such, Ray was just a dumb kid who couldn't appreciate the place on top of being in the middle of dealing with all that was happening to him. In one of the extra features on the DVD/BluRay, Colin Farrell mentions that he had a wonderful time in Bruges and loved being there during the shoot, and since the movie was made with a lot of help from the Belgian government and the local government and people from Bruges, he constantly felt terrible for having to badmouth the place all the time whenever they were filming and kept apologizing to everybody between takes because those were Ray's words and thoughts and he completely disagreed with them.

@@Udgrasil13 It was in script form for a very long time and the script made the rounds. Apparently, the film maker of Memory of a Killer chose between the two, but, like I said, in the opening minutes a cab driver says "In Bruges" three times in a row.

There was an extended ending to the movie that was cut that showed Ray sitting in his living room a month later reading about the events of the climax in the paper and then putting a gun in his mouth and it cut to black on the sound of a gunshot, I definitely prefer the more open-ended version we got personally, but I can also understand why some people might prefer the extended one
