I am sorry my audio was wonky, but I wanted to really emphasize that the structure of hiring is based on full time faculty hiring PT Faculty to be Full Time. But, the way the Union is structured is that Full Time is only allowed to hold positions in the Union with PT Faculty only able to hold one. Thus, there is no strength in numbers. There is a movement (led by White PT Faculty at many campuses) to start a PT faculty union, but this is again a fallacy because even though Blacks are largely PT faculty, a PT union would then pit PT against FT in a way that a PT will never become FT. With that being said, the union only focuses on salary and benefits. So, when there is a White dominant faculty, Black Faculty are doubly harmed - they cannot grieve against faculty, they cannot file a discrimination complaint with union help, they cannot sue without paying for it. So, the new lawsuit in San Diego Community College is demonstrating the core of this issue - Blacks are purposely not being hired to FT status, in which there are more Black students at most of these colleges, Whites don't attend community colleges in large numbers, and Black faculty typically have more student loan debt. Even in my love for teaching, more Black faculty get tired of waiting (10 year +) of getting a FT job, so they are more likely to go in student services, administrator, or just leave. I can send a copy of my presentation, but I am thinking of breaking up the papers for publication to really focus on how the history of Black teacher unions and when Blacks came to LA in the 1970s, they were in public K-12 teacher unions, in which they had a social justice focus - they would support teachers in discrimination cases. Yet, structurally, we cannot depend on the union for help because the bylaws don't permit it, and frankly, the people in the union are the problem because the White faculty are the gateways for hiring and NOT administration. At this point, I don't see how another way besides a class action lawsuit. Thus, my first paper on this topic could be more just explaining the system before other papers can be completed to delve into the nuts and bolts of what is happening on these campuses, such as the various racist dynamics between faculty and faculty; and faculty and administration.

Brava Dr. Elizabeth! In another life I lived that experience: semesters teaching 7 classes across 5 Campuses, designing curricula for my classes ultimately adopted by the Departments & "accepting" multiple Continuing Education courses when asked 😳 disillusioned into believing that would garner favor🤦🏾♀️ for FT🤷🏾♀️
@scholarlytalkonlife41433 жыл бұрын
@@TheCommsHeiress The "believing that would garner favor" is the key phrase. One campus, the dean has never taught, never wrote a syllabus, never wrote a SLO. I literally did it for a whole Division even in classes I don't even teach. They chuck a couple of dollars (not being disrespectful about it, but for the time, it is a couple dollars) and then they hire a White person who is under qualified. There are moments I question, What am I doing because on all 8 campuses, students drag me to speak at their clubs, be an advisor of this and that because I am the only Black woman. And then to have to keep fighting over and over for representation - Why is it necessary that I have to spend months and years fighting for a Latino or African American literature classes on campuses like Compton and other campuses when it is 80% Black and Latino? The racism is stunning.

Professor Karen, this segment has been liberating to my spirit, because it is uprooting the indoctrinated religious teaching the majority of us Black people hold as absolute "TRUTH". The Teaching Dr. Carr spoke on affected my psyche to the point where it went to my core, and that is truly a good thing because it is digging up teachings designed to keep one in the dark even though the teaching claims to be the "light of the world". Even as I type this comment I feel conflicted but that is only indoctrination trying to hold on, it is as Sister Harriet Tubman said " I could have helped more slaves escape if only they knew they where SLAVES" Thank you so very much for this Professor Karen and Dr. Carr.

A Study Manual might be an excellent resource for "In Class" students. This could allow Dr. Carr to more easily disseminate with a variety of information. Each chapter in the Study Manual, though comprised of static (Themes & Titles) information, will allow Dr. Carr the latitude to tangentially explore connective streams of knowledge to be shared with students. And space might be made available throughout each chapter for students to write down researched information prior to subsequent classes. This researched information will be at the student's fingertips and will allow each student to be better prepared to lock into and engage in dialogue (sometimes verbally, but much more frequently through messaging options). The Study Manual might be made available either online or in hard copy form.
