Coming Home to Autism

Coming Home to Autism

2 жыл бұрын

This week I learned a lot from a fantastic man, Jacob, who shares his experience of being on the spectrum. We talk about teenagehood, mental health, finding jobs, and many more. Please do write in the comments below if you'd like to ask Autism-related questions to Jacob, he's very happy to help the best he can!

My son is nonverbal and was diagnosed with autism at 2, he is now 4. I got my own autism diagnosis this year and I've been looking back, trying to think of how I can ensure my son doesn't experience some of the hardships I faced. Love that you both mentioned that even though scientists, business owners, artists and other people may have achieved "success" in life, people with autism can too no matter what they choose to do in life. Lovely video, thank you for sharing! ❤

I just now. Autistic people are angels. They are angels amongst us … so they can show us how we should live and go about things. Autistic people are angels. Angels on Earth.

@@lalciaaa ya you see? Unnecessary comment. My son will never lie to me. My son will always be so pure and innocent, he is truly an anger so I stand by my metaphors bye

@@ZimmoneZ618 it's dehumanising. I'm very happy your son is an amazing human being. But saying that neuro divergent/disabled people are angles, super natural creatures etc makes us feel like aliens who really don't belong to this world. As humans we also have the right to do bad things because it's a human right

Thank you Jacob and Tara... As a mother I'm trying to help my kid have a full life... He is 4 but I 've already started saying to him "girls love flowers", " it's nice to give flowers"...I imagine that one day he will be in love and he will need help to express his feelings... I don't know if that sounds silly?? I ' m trying to give him a step ahead...He is 4 but I have started teaching him how to read...he is not there yet...but I 'm trying...I'm dreaming of him going to primary and having a good start rather than struggle with reading and writing... And about bullying, what both me and my husband said to him, is if someone push you...push him back... Again I don't know if this is the right thing to do...Bullying is a big issue and hard to deal with and it's something that I expect in his life... It would be nice to have more advices how to handle issues like bullying, teenage love, help him/her choose the right job, guide them right to the important things that will make them happy... Tara, as you said...I want him to be happy!!!

This was a very good video and it does share some good insights. The double edge sword of inspiration and setting the bar too high is a big problem and another thing like that is portraying Autism as a superpower. The message is intended as positive and endearing however, it can lead to a lack of worth of feelings of failure that in an ASD mind, isn’t very helpful on top of everything else. What I’d like to see is some insights to masking ASD and how kids develop that coping mechanism to deal with the neurological world. Autism is just a neurological difference and more and more I hear that “Autistic people arent disabled but, their environment is not inclusive enough and built for neurotypical people.” Lastly, comorbities and autism is a pretty important thing to talk about as im sure you are aware. As a channel that can help educate others, a detailed video could be verry informative especially post Lockdown.
