I think this is how they have come up with String theory. At the deepest level they are thinking the universe is a simulation. So just like on our monitor there are pixels. Each pixel can take up any color, any brightness. And the pixel can be turned off too when the monitor turns off. The underlying basis for each pixel is ofcourse light and current (photons and electrons or electro magnetic fields if you will :) So the pictures that we see are actually not real at the fundamental level. Its just pixels turning on and off and changing colors. A physical picture or video doesnt exist. :) They are visualizing the universe on the same lines thinking every single point in the universe is like a pixel which they are visualizing as a small string. Depending on different intensity of electricity and magnetic field, the pixel can behave differently. It can be an electron, or quark or any of the other fundamental particles they have been talking about. So basically nothing in the world is real. Its just fields vibrating and becoming visible (to all our senses if you will.. again :) )
