RIP to Richard Leaky. He was my hero. He insights in paleoanthropology are unchallengend. He is great story teller too. I hope his new Museum in Nairobi will be finished.

May his soul rest in eternal peace. Kenya today lost a leader and a conservation icon.

Personally I think that once we started walking upright, the game (becoming what we are now) was over. Walking upright meant that our eyes looked ahead, not down and we started relying more on our vision than smell. This is visible in ancient skulls showing huge areas of the brain committed to vision. Then all we had to do was to switch from over-reliance on what we see immediately in front of us to thinking what could be -- problem solving. This is a simple and a natural move as by remembering what was, we could start putting together "what could be". And current neurosciences confirms that this is how we think - by putting together stuff in ways that works for us (remembering) -- we connect what is in flow

You might be right and there's a lot more points you could have put in your statement. Lucky for us too is that we have arms that are a decent length and hands that are very useful for trying out things we might have been thinking about visually and beyond.

That's interesting. I wonder why walking upright has been adopted by so few animals. Clearly the speed provided by 4legged running was and is of Prime importance as a survival plan.

I am sorry to say that Zeinab Badawi was the wrongest person to conduct this interview. She came full of her own homework about Richard Leakey, but sadly she also felt the need to mug up on human evolution in order to flout her knowledge on the subject of human origins, but could not pronounce the categories of various pre-human species easily. Her questions were long winded, for which there was no need. Some basic questions without flouting off her own "knowledge" on the subject of human evolution would have served equally well (or better) to allow Richard Leakey to speak and explain. Zeinab appeared also very tense, and her body language and gestures marred the experience of listening to RL speak who is a phenominal expert in the field of human origins.

Spot on. She was very distracting with her hand waving and apparent compulsive need to be the center of attention. "Wrongest person" indeed :-)

My only concern about this interview was that this gentleman has such a wealth of knowledge from decades worth of experience in the field...and yet nearly every answer to each question was the same...je ne se pas..

Sad that Kenya is wasting its brilliant minds in pursuit of wealth, really a Kenyan hero believes in the country and its people , you cant watch this without a pen and a paper the knowledge is just too much in this.

It is clear that the human family evolved bipedalism, that is “free hands”, in anticipation of the advent of the cell phone. And hasn’t it been convenient that the ability to utilize vocal language arrived at essentially the same historical time frame?
