The Long Hol

The Long Hol

Күн бұрын

A crisp Delhi winter afternoon in the enchanting company of William Dalrymple- author, adventurer and archaeologist, as we set off on a magical journey across the middle east, through our neighbouring countries only to end up in his beloved 'Dilli'.

Oh, sailing through the sound, fury, fog and filth all over the social media, I stumbled upon this serene place of yours. A quite corner to retire to at the end of the day, with a goblet of refined whiskey.

And what a joy to see your walled garden in Mehrauli, your personal Paradise that you have created for yourself and your family (at least in the winter months!:)) on the soil that you love and cherish. You carry your genius so lightly , and with such joy:) God Bless you, and thank you for the joy that your books have given us. The world is a more beautiful place because you are in it.

William! How wonderful to learn about your childhood! Beautiful and amazing and touching. To be born to devout Catholics in a protestant county, to not have travelled outside beautiful Scotland till the age of 18, and then to have discovered Delhi by sheer co-incidence and to have found your lifelong love! And I loved your analogy about feeling like Parsi while you are growing up, being a Parsi myself :)

I disagree with you. If you watch closely, you will appreciate that in the beginning, when William tried to praise Pakistan and Syria, the interviewer abruptly but quite intelligently started talking about Syria. I think it was not an honest way of conducting the discussion.

I’d like to see more historians with an Indian perspective. Though this Scottish chap loves India and its hospitality, he does come off as neo imperialist to me. I’m not sure another of these should be laying down the law on our country or its history.
