Genthru is most akin to a power-gamer in this regard. His ability is designed for murder simply because murdering your opponent is typically the most efficient means of furthering your desires against another who's trying to do the same. I mean, they can't do much to argue against you if they're just a cadaver. He isn't immoral, he actually doesn't give a shit about morality. He tosses such magical-thinking bullshit aside because working within such a system is inefficient and would hinder his ability to achieve his goals. His ambition is absolutely everything in the world to him, nothing else matters. The reason he isn't a complex character is because he consciously decides not to be. Being complex is inefficient.

Exactly! there is no reason to find an stupid underlying explation to every single thing. Some poeple are just born that way, no need to give them same archtype as the rest of the villans. @SupLuiKir7 жыл бұрын
SaruStuff124, I am in no way dismissing the process of analysis. I'm saying the analysis comes to the conclusion that it makes logical sense for Genthru to refine his outward-facing personality and the purpose behind his actions to a razor's edge. His sociopathy gives him the *freedom* to ignore the worthless feelings of the plebeians. It gives him the *freedom* to focus on what's important; Getting what he wants.

One thing you could add at 11:03 is that Genthru served to develop the depth of Gon's character - In their fight, Gon sacrifices a limb not to win, but to prove to himself that Genthru was wrong to take him lightly. Gon delays the plan that the gang carefully crafted, risking not only his own life, but those of his freinds if the plan were to now fail, just so he can feel better about himself and prove Genthru wrong. As has been pointed out before, this moment was crucial in showing just how unhinged Gon can be, which culminates in the CA arc. Genthru is someone that 'normal' people would call insane, he's willing to kill others without a thought just to achieve a monetary goal. But to have Gon cause (normally) irreparable damage to himself in an ideological fight, just to prove his worth, when that worth is now wasted because he lost an arm? *That* is how insane Gon can be - so unhinged that an insane person calls them insane. To get that effect, Togashi needed a character that *wasn't* resolute in their goal. Genthru's just in it for the money - there's other ways to make money, he's never going to go 'off the deep end' in pursuit of completing Greed Island. He's not crazy, he's just taking advantage of an opportunity utilizing his skills of killing without remorse. But that makes him distant enough from the norm to be a terrifying unknown labeled as 'insane'. So when you contrast him with Gon, a character that *will* 'go off the deep end', it reveals more about Gon.

I haven't watched this video yet (I am still on part one) so I don't know if the video mentions it, but the thing I loved about Genthru that fascinated me about and helped me understand his character so much, was through his Nen Ability, Little Flower. It didn't make much sense to me at first and was relatively inconsequential; however, when the battle between Netero and Meruem occured and Netero died I was confronted by that jaw dropping realization that Genthru's ability got its namesake from the Miniature Rose. Suddenly my mind was racing with conjectures about his backstory and history and what personal connection he could have had to the bomb. Maybe he could have had experiences with the bomb that influenced not only his Nen ability but his presence in the Greed Island Arc entirely. The amusement that I had garnered from that connection alone raised my approval and appreciation for the Greed Island arc substantially. I have never been so wowed by such subliminal storytelling ever before.
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
Nope, I didn’t mention it. That’s a very cool touch, I agree. Though to keep perspective I think it’s important to be open to the possibility that it’s just a reference or some sort of personal head-canon that Togashi added just for his own personal amusement that’ll never manifest in the story. Not everything has some grand meaning. However, that’s just me being a bit of a joykill. It is awesome to theorycraft about things like this and who knows? Maybe Genthru is part of some much bigger story and this is the allusion to it.
@jazz47787 жыл бұрын
+Azazel the Misanthrope Oh man, that's one hell of an observation. I personally think it could've been a little bit of cheeky foreshadowing. It seems likely that Togashi knew mostly where he was going with the next arc at the time of writing Greed Island, so it's plausible.

Very well said. Personally I kinda love how he looks like a background character. Like, from the start he blends in and seems insignificant because of that. And once he becomes the main villain of the arc...that stays the same. He doesn't pull off a mask to reveal his true appearance, he still looks just like a background character, even as he is running the show. And his presence as a character comes largely from his pragmatic brutality and strength, not the characterization itself. He's like if some nobody tertiary character became a main villain, and that amuses me.

For sure, that’s another reason why his bland character design was both important and a very clearly intentional thing. His design subtly changes in 2011 in particular (sharper lines on the face, harsher angles, etc) for understandable reasons but nothing changes apart from that at all.

I have always thought Genthru as a shallow villain. Watching through the arc never once struck me as a darkarc. However, the point to me that changed this was when he asked Gon to heal his friend. His expression is changed and better yet, they tell him that, this was their plan all along. He is down and they can still kick him, he is changed. From my point of view, Genthru is someone that has power but lacking resolve. He is, as you just said, someone who looks for the easy route, doesn't bother to shed tears for low powerlevel characters. Gon defeated him in a sense, that he showed him that it is resolve that brings you to a higher level, you shouldn't just waste your talent on something so petty, like killing, when just your presence and skill is able to bring your what you want - just imagine what Genthru and his friends could achieve if they were to put some effort into their actions rather than exploiting the weak. They are more than capable of doing so - see risky dice encounter with Tzesugera's team. All in all, your video did shed new light on Genthru. Thank you for making these videos!
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you brought that up - that little moment is a little hint to something more regarding him. This particular video wasn't really a character analysis so I didn't mention that but in looking at his psychology, that bit is key to his character, I think. He's definitely lacking in resolve as well, and that much is apparent throughout the entire arc.
@bernardoheusi61467 жыл бұрын
I must question your definition of resolve then... Guy killed dozens, maybe even hundreds of people and Tzuguerra run like a chicken from him. Almost finished the game. Yeah, "no resolve".
@MultiPocok7 жыл бұрын
Bernardo Heusi hm..maybe resolve is not the right word. Higher calling? Tzesugera has the same bloated ego, he realizes that he is outclassed by children, and as a character on the moral side of our protagonists, he joins them. To me, genthru is wasting his talent. You can fool and damage control many people ( see netero) but this was just petty and useless. ( Very goog videos on this chanel regarding gons morality. So, in hindsight I try to find Gons reason to defeat him
@bernardoheusi61467 жыл бұрын
The theme of this arc was team play. And not only because of the awesome dodgeball game. Genthru was a psycho prick and would never find out how to get a team that would 1- Allow him to win the match versus Razor. FFS even Gon managed to use Hisoka. 2- Get intel from others that would make you beat your opponent. Gon was inferior to Genthru but having info from Biscuit made him win his fight - even if not by Biscuit´s plan. Not too hard to understand. But resolve, Genthro DID have.
@MultiPocok7 жыл бұрын
I already accepted, that my interpretation of resolve was wrong( not my first language, I just felt that the word is right here, i was wrong! :D) My point was about whether he is shallow or not. Genthru knows what a team is capable in my opinion - hence his plan to use that mass of players. They have a release that they use together - they know that they have no chance to beat up Tzesugera so they steal from them, after all its 4 or 5 vs 3 - im sure they understand teams and information very well. Rather, he is bloated by ego and is petty besides being a psycho
@Thebes3427 жыл бұрын
Most of this video is how I've always thought of Genthru when people say he's a bad villain, but I've never been able to structure my argument or thoughts as well as this video. Genthru's not a complex villain by any means, but you don't need a villain to be complex to be well-written, and Genthru fits the themes of this arc perfectly. Every time I rewatch the Greed Island arc, I appreciate Genthru more and more for how he complimented that arc, essentially being the epitome of the worst kind of gamers in the genre Greed Island was going for. Although, Gon's fight with Genthru is one of my favorite moments in the entire series, because it was so well put together. It wasn't a fight of who's stronger, but a fight of will and endurance. And despite how much Genthru outclassed Gon, Gon's victory still felt believable, unlike most turn-around fights in Shonen. People also tend to sleep on how strong Genthru was due to their disinterest in him, but Genthru was at least up there with Knuckle in terms of strength. That, and I kinda love Genthru's hatsu, more than I like Genthru if I'm being honest. His abilities weren't the most practical in a fight, but still very well-thought out, threatening, and fit Genthru's methods perfectly with how manipulatively they could be used. Little Flower and Countdown exemplified just how deadly and intellegent Nen abilities could be, especially Conjuration. Once again, great video, man!
@GalekC7 жыл бұрын
Side-note: Genthru's responsible for one of the goriest moments of the manga, although I wouldn't say it's the most disgusting - but still graphic. So, I agree that his Hatsu is the real endearing thing about him just all-around; not just for the sake of gore in this instance of the shonen demographic

He was just scary as hell. Lol

Absolutely, his ability fit him perfectly, what I really love about this entire arc is not only Gon Killua and Hisoka topping Razor but how Gon was clearly much weaker, less experienced, less aura, and in a way his lack of experience is why he won. I'm talking about how he thought how does Genthru not blow off his own hands, oh ok, if he uses both he has none to gaurd himself so kick to chin jajenkin ftw, I'd have preferred if that's how he won, not complaining was very good still. My point is like Genthru says what sane person would think of even trying that? Gon won not by getting mad and going aura v2 etc but the unique character mentalities and perceptions leading to unique strategies and the nen system, this fight is an excellent example of how and why the nen power system is so cool
@Champsr0ck22475 жыл бұрын
@@awon6518 Makes it sad that most of the Chimera Ant arc plays it straight that power > experience & mentality. Meruem, Pitou, and Youpi just brute force their way through fights, whereas Pouf never actually fights, just runs away. The other lower Chimera Ants are just absurdly strong and gifted fighters to give Gon & Killua a run for their money, before Gon & Killua both get stronger and just beat them. Wow I didn't expect this video so soon. I completely agree with you on how the theme and tone works in conjunction with how the villains and antagonists are used in the arcs, since it's something I noticed myself and it's nice to see that you think so as well. Greed Island was isolated from most of the overall narrative and only had a few ties to the overarching plot - so having the main antagonist be catered just for the arc made sense to me thematically. The arc was light hearted, it was a training arc and a breather after YorkNew and the Phantom Troupe - the themes just dark enough to not take the arc out of Hunter X Hunters overall narrative but light enough that you didn't have to think too hard about what was going on (naturally Togashi left some sneaky foreshadowing here because it would be either harder or easier to pick up on depending on how you view it) so in terms of arcs Greed Island is my 4th favourite but Genthru is far from my favourite villain but I understand his point in the arc enough that I never thought of him as a terrible villain. Also I'm still hoping to see a Killua video from you, or maybe one on Leorio but it's entirely up to you, I like watching your videos because you have a similar view on things as I do, only much more eloquent. Genthru has realism and motivation, thats enough for me to pass as a antagonist. The notion of the stronger to step on those below them to reach higher grounds while being like psychopaths. Thats how life is to an extent. When people slaughter others bcuz those are considered to be belonging to a lower class, and doing that with gruesome means, its history, not shallowness and bad constrution for a character. Therefore you shouldnt demand more of an antagoinist with pure ill will to reach his goal. The importance with such characters are thier choices for reaching their goals, not the characters themselves, its the trip to their goals which are intressting, they themselves are psychoplaths or conditioned psychopaths. In hxh the thing that moved me was how all those nen user got needlessly killed, how Pues head ended in a paper bag, how the main characters was forced to make actions, all those gears was set in motion bcuz genthuru, he set the motion to all and that defines his amount of interest. Genthurus personality itself is basic, plain and predictable, but, its realistic and leads to sensational scenes, which differs from other such characters in other shows. No need to justify the greed Island arc even if there are reasons, its an arc for itself, an not much of prepration to the ant arc more than the ant arc is in preperation for its preceeding election arc. One of my fav arcs, it got ne shocked a couple of times.

I like how Genthru, throughout the Greed Island arc, makes deals with other players but doesn't stick to his word, usually stealing their cards from them. This type of personality is what made everyone dislike him and it made him seem like he had less of a personality. Usually, the likable villains wouldn't cheat or lie in these sorts of situations but this is also what makes Genthru different from all of them (like you said, in desperation). He is a toned-down, normal human villain compared to the rest of the villains who have extreme personalities that we might not see in real life. He is someone who would have to cheat to be able to complete the game, something that we would have done before - we just don't like to admit it. I think that it's okay to have a dislikable villain as we all just simply can't sympathize with everyone. I like how at the end, we really do see a caring side to him when he tells Gon to heal his friends and not himself. We see that he does care for certain others which completely going against what he had done throughout the arc.

Genthru may not be a popular character in the series but when HxH fans talk about their favorite fights & moments? Genthru vs. Gon is definitely one of those best moments/fights of the series. Best parts of Greed Island for me: 1. The dodgeball game 2. Gon vs. Genthru 3. Hisoka........being Hisoka. XD

I've always felt that Genthru, and Greed Island in general, were underrated. It's not that they are my favorite arc or anything by a long shot, though I don't feel the particular dislike for them that some people seem to. It's more of that I feel that after dealing with the phantom troop we needed a breather even if we didn't realize it at the time. HXH has is dark, pointed moments, but those moments wouldn't stand out of have the impact that they do if they were happening all the time. It's because they are set against a lighter background that they stand out the way they do. The lighter arcs also serve the function of making it so that people that cannot or will not watch things that are entirely dark still are able to enjoy the series. To this point, Genthru is vital precisely because he is NOT as complex of a villain as many of the others are. Genthru doesn't really stand out, but because has doesn't stand out, Chrollo and Merum stand out all the more. In the same way that many of the darker arcs are able to more clearly able to make their points because they stand out against the lighter arcs, Chrollo and Merum stand out the more because Genthru doesn't. It shifts the emphasis to the characters that we're supposed to pay attention to. And, as you said, that is a good thing.

Kind of reminds me of one of Leorio's functions, being the most normal of the dazzling potentials around him. But interestingly enough--not that the gaming community hasn't suffered enough for this, but Genthru is kind of the embodiment of how a lot of us act in games.... just saying XD That's why only ideas should be taken seriously, and never the medium itself. But all art mediums, imho, are vessels for driving what's most important ahead, and that's pretty freakin' cool by itself if you ask me :P

Greed Island was actually my favorite arc in the manga. The anime rushed the pacing of Greed Island a bit and on the other hand some of the longer parts of the Chimera Ant Arc are better in the anime, due to the controlled pacing, the build-up is easy to marathon, but a bit less engaging to actually read through.
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
I actually didn't mind the pacing in the 2011 anime. I think 1999 stumbles a bit with Greed Island, though. It's been a while since I saw those OVAs but they were comfortably the weakest adaptation of the manga for me.

Thank you for this analysis series! It brought up some really interesting topics of how HxH is structured overall. Personally I found Genthru forgettable because of everything else the arc was setting up at the time. While I did find enjoyment from him Genthru sort of faded to the background. With the arrival of The Phantom Troupe and Hisoka, who are my favorite villain from the show I was more inclined to watch them and ended up playing favorites. Still I don't find Genthru falling into the background bad. Actually, he might be a positive, like you said. Although I barely remember him in favor of others, he served the arc well. He was intimidating but not so much that I felt he was forced. If this was in a real world sense he'd be the player that constantly followed you requesting a battle and then beating you with the strongest weapon he could find. This might make you angry but you'll work to get up to his level and maybe challenge him again. Genthru is a good stepping stone to better themes and I can appreciate what he does story-wise.

Thanks for watching and I’m glad it was useful! I more or less agree with everything you said here. He isn’t supposed to shine as a villain. He’s supposed to help the other elements shine.

just dropping comment here to say that i'm so glad i found your Hunter x Hunter analysis video. Im glad i watched HxH analysis video from you because after watching it, i suddenly want more! watching an anime analysis video isnt something i ever did before and i never thought it would be this interesting. I really like the way you describe every single thing with sincere and seriousness, because aftervl watching all your HxH disscussion i tried to search another one from other youtuber, but i couldnt find someone who describe it as sincere as you. well i did find it but idk somehow there's something missing so i end up coming back to your channel again x'D oh one thing that i really want to know from you is how you see the friendship between Gon and Killua. i ever read this in a blog that their friendship is kinda unbalance and unhealthy (in this case for Killua). i dont mean it in that way but after reading that blog i kinda agree that Killua always do anything for the sake of Gon, While the selfish Gon only thinking how it is to achieve his goal without caring the people around here. Killua often hurt by Gon but he didnt really care as long as Gon achieve what he want. Seeing this making me sad somehow... oh my god what have i done, i typed so much. im sorry but since i already typed it i will post it anyway lol. Hoping for more video from you soon!

Nice second part! Your voice is full of conviction and provides a compelling argument Some more constructive criticism, when putting text corrections of your speech, make them longer!!!! It's infuriating to go back and pause, also I feel that this video is very on topic, that is not my complaint, I feel you should come back to genthru more often because you come across as rambling even though the subject matter is on topic. Hope this is helpful!

That's a personal thing, I don't like them being there long. I just expect people to go back and pause if they're really interested, not read it for as long as it's up. Sorry, haha. *I feel you should come back to genthru more often because you come across as rambling even though the subject matter is on topic.*
@Snow-sx5ev7 жыл бұрын
Aleczandxr umm, unsure how to explain, you talk about things that relate to genthru, but it is hard to relate the two since you do not go back to genthru often enough in my opinion this is a personal opinion and I would like to say that I still enjoy your videos, these are just minor things I noticed
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
*you talk about things that relate to genthru, but it is hard to relate the two since you do not go back to genthru often enough in my opinion* Do you have an example? Or if you're talking about the bits where I describe why certain villains worked with relation to their arcs (Chrollo, Meruem, etc) - they had nothing to do with Genthru. Through that, I was showing how and why villains are constructed certain ways with regards to their arcs and showing this pattern throughout the whole series, and then the Genthru part uses that bigger picture thinking. If I mentioned Genthru during those parts it would be jarring and pretty irrelevant.
@Snow-sx5ev7 жыл бұрын
Aleczandxr yes, that was what I was talking about! I understand your reasons better now and agree, but I couldn't help but feel that genthru was mentioned pretty late into the video, if he was mentioned earlier, if only briefly, the video would feel more on topic and in MY opinion flow better, but no matter what you do just know I am not trying to bash this channel, and this is a very minor detail that in all does not stop me from enjoying your content
@Aleczandxr7 жыл бұрын
I know you're not bashing my channel, lol. There's no problem at all, I just want to explain myself here. *I couldn't help but feel that genthru was mentioned pretty late into the video, if he was mentioned earlier, if only briefly, the video would feel more on topic and in MY opinion flow better* You're right, and I know - that's why I put a disclaimer in part one. But Genthru was only half the story, and he could be explained using my reasoning from earlier, so that was how I had to structure the video. Defending Genthru was only one of the two points of these videos - the other half being an examination of Togashi's arc structure/style and how that relates to villains. That's a topic that takes more time to explain and something that I use as framework to argue for Genthru, so naturally it takes up the bulk of the time. TLDR; Genthru wasn't the most important point here, he's just one part of a bigger picture.
@Valkner117 жыл бұрын
The first time Genthru shows up in the anime you would never expect that he will be the main villain of the saga, his design is pretty in line with is role and personality, you can like it or not but he's well written. He's a guy in a world that can repay you well if you act with brute force.
@jiIIua7 жыл бұрын
these are some good points.. he's actually my favorite villain, besides Illumi.. i made a reddit post explaining why a while back: www.reddit.com/r/HunterXHunter/comments/68gn8c/genthru_changed_my_life_and_refurbished_my_soul/
@inversiold17516 жыл бұрын
I'm going to be honest, because of his function, I can't help but say Genthru is like my second favorite villain, because reading and watching greed island has helped me learn about functionality in writing. For me, my second experience with HxH, which I read, was all about dissecting the functions of the arcs and how they came together into what they currently are. Which made *Greed Island* a treat for me to dissect from at least a function standpoint.
