I always thought Genthru's main schtick is to showcase how fucking nuts Gon is. Genthru is the cold, logical, conjurer-type of guy, which is why he doesn't get it when Gon lets him blow his god-damn arms off. It's an ominous segway into what Gon does in the CA arc.

Yes! Finally someone talks about how Genthru isn't as bad of an antagonist as everyone thinks! He defnitely can't compare to the other great antagonists in HxH overall but on his own he is also a really good antagonist especially for the Greed Island Arc. He was an important stepping stone for Gon to become stronger. Without him inbetween the YC Arc and the CA Arc Gon's growth and change in the CA Arc would feel way to drastic.

Yes! I've been waiting for such a thing. Genthru is always so hated as a villain because he seems flat, but there is more behind it, which makes Genthru a good villain for the respective arc and characters, as well as for the development and showcasting of characteristics from the main characters. Greed Island is a not much loved arc but I think it was a fun arc with a good contrasting villain.

It's always awesome when you make Hunter X Hunter videos. This series I think will be interesting, because while he was never a favourite villain of mine, Genthru was *not* what I would consider a bad villain. He's was smart and competent and when compared to Gon and Killua he was also more experienced, a real challenge either way and his personality was typical of a villain in most shonen, but here typical isn't a *bad* thing when - like you state, context and tone affect the story arcs and the villains of each one respectively and for light-hearted training arcs like Greed Island, someone like Genthru, who isn't a massively powerful character like those in the Phantom Troupe (who he had the misfortune to follow after) is needed as a viable obstacle for the protagonists to overcome, he never needed all this depth and character development, he served a purpose relative to this arc - like how someone like Tompa wouldn't work outside the Hunter Exam and how chaotic it would be if Merurem was in any other arc besides his own. Catch you next time in part two, it's always interesting to hear what you have to say, so I'll be there.

@@axtra9561 No they aren't even on the dark continent yet. They're on an expedition to the dark continent. We're currently at the Succession War arc where the 14 princes of Kakin are in a death match on the ship heading to the dc(after dropping citizens off at the fake dark continent) and the last one alive gets to become the next king of Kakin. And tbh this succession war has the potential to become one of the best arcs of hxh. Especially since the princes have badass abilities and the phantom troupe are hunting hisoka while kurapika(the mc of this arc) is planning a confrontation with the 4th prince of Kakin(the last person with a lot of kurta eyes.) The 4th prince is probably going to end up being a better antagonist than chrollo imo. maybe not better than Meruem but hes barely obtained his ability and seems like he'll be a bigger threat later on since his first ability is op asf(time manipulation) and still has 2 scary looking nen beasts with crazy abilities.

You're the spokesperson to many many fans out there and in addition to being thourough in your analysis you have that poetic chill side that most of your followers cant get enough of i guess 😁. Hunter x Hunter has always had a VERY peculiar place in my heart. I watched both anime MANY times whether in one run or by bits without the pleasure of experiencing the story dulling a bit. However it's also been for a long time a huge source of frustration cause when i watched it back in the day as a child and later around 2k8, there weren't that many fans of the series (none around me) and it definetly didnt have the kind of visibility and recognition it has today so i was never able to discuss its themes, thoughts and so on with a friend. Though im only writing this now ive been following you for quite a while and you've been quenching that thirst eversince as it's easy to understand how inversted and affected you are by the series (pretty sure im not the only one in that situation !) so for that and your hard work thank you.

One other element regarding death is that the tone varies too with how those death play into characters. With the light and dark patterns I’d say the deaths (or harm in the case of Zoldyck Family) impacts people close to the characters. With Zoldyck, Yorknew, Chimera Ant and of course Dark Continent, much of the turmoil and tension come from how the main characters have to grapple with how previous and current deaths impact and change them/play directly into character motives.

Awesome video once again, I completely agree with the tonal ping-pong Togashi likes to play with HxH as he progresses the story ever forward. From what I've read of the Successor arc currently ongoing would agree it is steadily shifting further along a darker tone (as most arcs concerning Kurapika as the center of focus tend to do). You've got a bunch of brand new characters that Togashi is beginning to assign purpose and depth to that you just KNOW won't be making it to the Dark Continent Arc alive, couple this with the lovecraftian aesthetic of some of the parasite nen beasts, and a very high stakes game of cat and mouse for Succession to the throne of a kingdom where in the winner must slaughter his other siblings whole sale, its the perfect recipe for a gruesome blood bath. One with all the makings of an arc that could get almost as Dark as the Chimera Ant Arc itself.
