Pony Lawson has over 20 years of tattooing experience. In the last few years he's primarily tattooed micro portraits, a style that has boomed in popularity worldwide. Many across the industry have called out this style of tattooing with concerns of how it will age. Pony stopped by our video studio to share some of his opinions on the hot button topic and explain how he tries to ensure longevity in his pieces.
Tattoo Opinions is a new series where we bring in artists to share their very strong thoughts on certain aspects of the industry. Passions will rise and people are going to get angry. We provide the soapbox, the artist provides the opinion.

I just wished more artists would actually post healed versions of their works so people can actually see how the tattoo will look in a year. I don't care how it looks when it's freshly done if I'm spending a large amount of money on something that looks like shit relatively soon. And also artists need to stop photoshopping tattoos excessively. Like it's false advertising at that point

I always felt bad for him when people were bashing micro tattoos. Yeah there could be artists that do micro tattoos because it's "trendy" or whatever that doesn't always turn out great but Pony has done incredible work and as he said, it's the contrast that will determine how good a tattoo looks. Can only hope I will get the chance to get a tattoo from him in the future

Artist like him (experts in their own style) are the only ones who should do this kind of styles where you really need to be an expert so the tattoos don't fade or look bad with time
@LdyVder
@LdyVder 2 жыл бұрын
@@754fr Not all tattoos that look bad over time is because of the artists. If you are in the sun constantly, your ink will fade if you don't use some type of sun screen. I got a coverup of one of my older tattoos a few months ago. I commented to my artists about a tattoo that is just red with white on the inside of the red about how well the white has stuck around. He said it's because it doesn't get a lot of sun. Which is true for most of my tattoos. If you don't take care of your skin, that too, can jack up a tattoo.

I think a lot of the time when people bash on micro tattoos they really mean those teeny tiny single needle tattoos that you see on Pinterest done by lesser skilled artists (Romeo Lacoste cough cough). Those are shown to age horrifically in a short period of time because they’re literally *too small* for that amount of detail. Pony’s work shown here is incredible. It’s just the right size to still be small but hold so much detail, and the contrast is great. Truly a talented artist.
@SuperFatAlbert
@SuperFatAlbert 3 жыл бұрын
Not quite, things like the hair details on the scissorhands tattoo will blend together much sooner than you'd want them no matter how dark they are, because of the distance between the lines (rather than their value). You can fix/maintain FADING tattoos, not bleeding. You can always add more ink but you can't take it out! Everyone knows they won't hold, its just more about living in the moment and deciding whether YOU think it's worth above average prices for a much shorter lived (but maybe more impressive) tattoo. Being trendy plays a big part too.
@3spressoShot
@3spressoShot 2 жыл бұрын
@@SuperFatAlbert yes thats the thing, lines will bleed on any tattoo and the less room the lines have to breath the more it will look like a blob, but I think pony has the right approach.. high contrast simpler tattoos. he might los detail on the hair but you will still know who it is. i think that was the main point.

@Ineverusemychannel
@Ineverusemychannel 3 жыл бұрын
Yes but you have to account for bleeding, too. Lines will expand and blur and become less readable with age even if they’re black. This happens to big tattoos too but the space between lines on larger tattoos makes them readable longer. Find a good, honest artist and do whatever you want. It’s your body and nothing lasts forever.

In that regard, Pony Lawson is most definitely one of the most outspoken and detailed people to be in these videos, much moreso than Paul. The only artists that have been in these Inked videos who I think would give Pony a run for his money in this aspect would be Guy Aitchison, Joe Smith, and Alexandra Fische. The former two were for their refreshingly professional and detailed explanations in the coverup videos, and the latter (like Pony) is for her continued small insights through all of her appearances.

30-40 years and 3-4 years is a big difference. I know this is a newer style I guess so we don’t have anything 30 to 40 years on but if you’re going to make a video trying to make an argument for how long this will last you need to use some more aged unedited pictures.

Yeah I feel like it’ll take awhile to gauge how they’ll really age. I like the micro tattoos, I figure that if they do fade in 30-40 years, they’re small enough that I think a solid coverup tattoo is possible.

This video should have been able to include more examples since it is in defense. The only issue people have with micro tattoos is how they will heal and there is nothing healed. Obviously they are some amazing tattoos fresh. I don’t think it would be that difficult to shoot out an email to former clients looking for healed photos for a video on the topic.

@@Supersquishyawesomeness I do think that's asking a lot. Neither of the shops I've gone to have my email or contact info outside my phone number, and it has never even occurred to me to later look them up online to post a photo of my tattoo. Unless you see them regularly, getting aged photos of your work is basically an impossible task. Your contact info changes, people forget where they got them or who did them, how old they are, etc. I understand the desire to know what your tattoo is going to look like in the future and wanting to see aged works by your artist, but just because there arent a lot of pictures available does necessarily mean that they're lying or up to something. Getting those pictures is entirely up to the person who got the tattoo to post them

You didn't listen. He is saying they heal the same as other well executed tattoos. The ones that stick around and have been done well to begin with have contrast to stand the test of time even after bleaching and fading. Look at a vig piece 10 years or 20 years old that has obviously been applied well. See the smaller details, they are most likely black and still convey the shape language they did the day it was done. His defence is that he doesn't just do small tattoos. He does them while thinking about that black contrast, which is pretty much all he does now. Look at his current work and you'll see that each piece is dezined with the contrast in mind, pretty clearly. Not every micro tattoo artist does this. Many if them just do whatever, and especially the ones without black contrast, will age terribly. In each example he states what will stay and what will probably be lost. You cannot expect a better defence than that from a techniqe and style so new.

From all the years of tattooing I can say that if you heal your tattoo bad - it will blur and spread more, than a well healed tattoo. Well healed tattoo will stay more crisp and solid. I am talking about the moist healing methon, when wound heals faster and has no scabs, but only skin peeling off. Because moist environment for the cells are important so they would migrate faster, reproduce faster, heal faster and heal better and safer for the skin. Those wounds healed by this method, have a better regenerated skin than those who have been healed with scabs. They age better. And don't forget about the sun effect on the tattoos. How you protect form UV rays in the days, that adds the quality too. Those who never protect it, it can fade pretty quickly.

All the bold, traditional tattoos I've seen on old people don't look like blobs at all! There is some truth to "bold will hold".

I saw the other video and I just say that it's easy to criticize the other's work just with speculation, without even demonstrating healing. Pony brings facts and that's it, a good tattoo is made of a good application of contrast

Pony is clearly a very skilled and experienced artist, and I believe that these tattoos will hold up better than many in this style, but even 2 years is a fairly short time given that most people will have their tattoos for decades. It’s a matter of the physiology of tattoos that lines close together will gradually bleed into each other, and even for an artist like pony, tattoos like this will inevitably lose detail a lot faster than if they were larger or a traditional/neotraditional style. He seems to be more upfront with his clients about these matters, which is great, but many micro tattoo artists less respectable than him won’t tell their clients everything they should know about how well they can expect these atttoos to hold up over time.

It's really great to hear Pony's speak on this topic! I think the conversation about micro tattoos (and any title style for that matter) should be more focused on the techniques used, as the application is what truly makes or breaks the piece of art. Pony's description of his technique and framing of his pieces provides great insight into how to do this style well, though I'm afraid many other micro tattoos (particularly popular ones you see online) don't utilize the techniques Pony describes, which could be a cause for concern for the pieces' longevity. Still glad to hear positive discourse on this subject, either way.

Honest question: arent micro realism tattos a new thing? If so, how can people say that it cannot be as good/last as a tradi one? I mean, there should be no person that has had micro tatto for 15+ years to say it didnt lasted/aged well. I get and agree that the fact of micros being small is a great issue specially when theres a lot of details, but regardless, no one can really say they wont age well... totally not like a tradi one, but ppl seem to hate to much on them. Additionally i think that the tatto equipment has changed and improved a lot in the past years, isnt it? which could help on ensuring a long lasting tatto, or not? pd: i dont have tattos but have been recently very interested on them :)

I’m so fond of this man... he seems so sweet while having that very sincere side of him. Plus, he has that kicking sense of humor to top it off (thinking about that time where he was like “you know, I kinda fit the bill“ (about looking like the kind of person who’d do trashy racist tattoos), that was hilarious) and of course, his work is really something.

I got a pretty small autograph tattoo. Maybe not a "micro tattoo" but it is a fine line tattoo. Because I knew the artist's technique was important but also how I took care of it even more so, I had it placed at the back of my arm where the skin doesn't rub with other skin. It's also a place where my skin is quite pale which is good for contrast and also means the sun never hits it. I take care of it with tattoo balm and such lotions to keep the skin fresh. If you buy a painting or any other artwork, you don't put it next to a window where the sun is going to shine on it every afternoon. Same with tats. Take care of them, go back for a touch up if needed.

Def seems best to get a 2 step process like he explains with a black &grey shaded base then add the color on top to make it pop and even if the color fades some ..you still have the black &grey to keep the image together over time.Makes a sense to me.White usually is the first to go too,I've noticed that with my tattoos esp.Looks really cool when it's fresh but if you don't get it in a spot on your body that is protected from the elements like sun exposure ...say goodbye to that white.Good to see the tattoo images after a few years time also.👍
