Which is bad because hand traps are significantly less interactable than trap cards and offer much less depth to the game. "Is the card he just set a trap that could get in my way or is it a bluff? @@elijahdavila3684 they are not so different imo. on the field or in the hand they will have the same effect and the other player always has incomplete information on what the opponent has or not. @elijahdavila36845 жыл бұрын
@@goncaloferreira6429 Most hand traps aren't answers to each other. Out of the most popular hand traps, none of the ghost girls or Droll or Impermanence interact with each other and a limited number of these interact with hand traps like Phantazmay. Yes both traps and hand traps give the player opposite to then limited information, that is half the purpose of cards like these. But whereas traps give a clear message that your opponent has some form of interaction and you have the opportunity to discern what is is based on the meta and boardstate and either play around it or remove it beforehand, hand traps have little to no tells if they are even in your opponent's hand and little interaction to them other than wasting CA trying to bait one out.

It would be a balancing act, for sure. There just need to be more reasons for people to double-think if they should nuke your backrow or question if they're really safe. Everyone is worried about trap destruction. But what about traps that when targeted can always be activated immediately? Take Karma Cut. Its gets targeted by Twin Twisters, so you immediately flip the card over and banish a monster. Yes you have to discard a card, so its a two card cost, but your opponent also played two cards. And you can use it as a makeshift foolish barrier.

some thoughts: 1-for some of this video trap are defined as negations. that is greatly limiting the variety of traps there is. with that said, yugioh is increasingly becoming a game of all or nothing, where if a player stumbles for a turn(doesnt have an answer right away) the often ends. Negation has too much importance in such a game. 2- the game should not put such defining weigh to going first or second, something that ends up limiting players deckbuilding choices even further. 3- if one of the appeals of using trap cards is playing mind tricks with your oponent, how is using hand traps(or spell cards with the same effects) any different or better?
@mfdmwells51045 жыл бұрын
1. There are plenty of good Traps that aren't negates like Crackdown and Rivalry, it's just that ones that don't interfere with your opponent are basically a dead weight. Hence why no-one is playing Call of the Haunted or its equivalents. Same thing happens with monsters in combo decks: any monster you end on without an interrupt isn't helping your deck. It's interrupts in general that define the game, not just negation. And Traps ensure interrupts are built into the very fabric of the game. 2. This happens in every game to some extent or another. In the Pokémon TCG if you're planning on going second you should avoid slow Evolutions and high-energy attacks, and probably play more "board-break" cards for attacking your opponent's setup like Guzma and Enhanced Hammer. Not building your deck to go first or second takes away a huge advantage you have when you win the die roll/coin toss/RPS. Even in chess, White wins 2 to every Black win in competitive chess because White gets to go first, and this MASSIVELY affects the strategy of both players. White openings in chess tend to be aggressive to try and consolidate the advantage of the first move, while Black openings tend to be more defensive or counter-attacking. I could go on and on, but in short, any time you have a turn based game and one player gets to go first, someone has an advantage. 3. Spells can't be used in response to opposing cards unless they are Quick-play, which is what makes Quick-Play Spells so strong (see: Sky Striker). However, these cards and handtraps are generally weaker than Traps (compare Heavy Storm Duster and Twi-Twi). So the advantage of Traps is they are generally much stronger, and resolving a lot of Traps will win you many games.
@goncaloferreira64295 жыл бұрын
@@mfdmwells5104 1-we used different terminology but again i say, interrupts have too big a role in modern yugioh 2- the pokemon comparison isnt very good. true,some decks prefertogo second(control/stall decks) but they are not built specifically to go second. Also,unlike Magic and pokemon there is no side deck and sideboarding so after the first game players dont make changes to their decks due to going first or second on subsequent games. In chest 1st or second can change your playstyle but not your pieces(cards) 3- that is precisely my point. trap cards, the few that are played, could be printed as quick play spells. nothing stops them from doing so and raising their power level if needed.
@mfdmwells51045 жыл бұрын
@@goncaloferreira6429 1. Interrupts have ALWAYS had a HUGE role in yugioh. The very existence of Traps that aren't battle traps proves that. 2. The point still stands. Any time you have a turn based game and one player gets to go first, someone has an advantage. In some older formats this meant going second because having the first attack/chance to OTK was important. ATM it's going first. And yugioh's speed inevitably means that a small advantage can be rapidly converted to a large one. There's no side in Pokémon, but all that means is the tech options are all in the maindeck instead. And while you can't build going-first/going-second general goodstuff in Pokémon, your deck will very much dictate whether you choose to go first or second. You don't build to go second, your deck just naturally needs to go second (see: Night March) or first (see: pre-Wally ban Trev). 3. Doing that breaks a core mechanic of the game: the existence of Traps. They can do that, but only by basically throwing their core mechanics out the window. There always will be Traps in yugioh and nothing will change that. Whether the majority of decks are playing them is another issue entirely.
@goncaloferreira64295 жыл бұрын
@@mfdmwells5104 it seems i cannot explain myself properly today. 1- how do you define interrups then? 2- i have seen lot of yugioh games that end turn 2- player concedes because cant break opponent board - or 3 beacuse the player going first otks. this doesnt happen in anny other game i am familiar with. going first or second, in conjunctionwith the opponing hand) define lots of games of yugioh. Fair points on pokemon 3- that is my point.decks these day play very few trap cards if any at all. of course they wont erradicate them but in terms of effect they might as well do because other card type could(and do) have the same effects.
@mfdmwells51045 жыл бұрын
@@goncaloferreira6429 1. An interrupt is any Quick Effect (speed speed 2 or 3) that can affect (directly or indirectly) the opposing cards during the Main Phase, with the intention of preventing the opposing player carrying out their gameplan. Some older examples of this include Solemn Judgement, Torrential Tribute, the Trap Holes and Compulsory Evacuation Device. Interrupts have always been a core mechanic of yugioh. 2. Yugioh has always been a fast game. Demise/Doom OTK in 2007. DAD Return OTK in 2008. Wind-Ups in 2012/early 2013. Even really old examples like Yata lock can be executed frighteningly fast. Yugioh always has had massive combo decks, and while it is true that RN the balance is in favour of the person going first, there have been many points in Yugioh's history where going second was at a large advantage. It just depends on what is the meta. If Borrelsword Turbo OTK becomes the meta, then going second will become advantageous, both to OTK and prevent yourself being OTKed. 3. Konmai has not made a rule forcing us to play Traps. People always used to play Traps because they were the easiest means of having interrupts. Now they have a lot of competition in that department, so old venerables like Torrential are having to be put aside in favour of better and better ones to try and keep pace with the rest of the game. And if Konmai doesn't print any good Trap cards and prints better Monster and Spell cards, naturally people aren't going to play Traps. However, the flipside to this is cards like Imperm which is a staple 3-of, and Side Decks with several very powerful Traps in them like Artifact Sanctum to help going first. There are still plenty of Traps in the game, it's just that competition has forced all but the most powerful to take a backseat. And for why you would play traps nowadays, see the video.

@@Nexit1337 It got some tops a while ago as an OTK deck. Probably could again if anyone actually did play it since no one knows what to negate.

tl;dr: Traps are called traps for a reason- you need to think of them as you would an irl trap. what is the trap for/ what does it need to do/ be capable of withstanding etc.

"It definitely sucks that trap cards have to deal with so many cards". We actually need more cards to deal with them LOL. We need Storm or Feather back.

Old man who hasnt played since Goat format here if no one is playing traps, and im guessing continuous spells and non necrovally field spells are still not a thing, and quickplay spells are also not as much a thing Why is anyone playing backrow disruption? wouldnt traps be like an anti meta call that folks just arnt prepared for? Or do cards just have anti backrow effects built in and the trap hate is kinda incidental like.... idk Stratos?

It's kind of hard to explain it without getting into too much detail, but Continuous Spells, Quickplay Spells, and Field Spells are all very popular right now.

Negates too. But they all are part of Yugioh

I disagree, at least they were when the game was not powercrept so hard. Like, you know how many of them your opponent have. Usually you know which traps are played, so it's just about understating wich action is risky and when to take said risk. Botgomless for example is a card that encourage mind games because one player try to bait it while the other try to hit the right monster whit it. Obviously when the traps are like evenly match it became just frustrating.

Silly Yugituber, you can't defend Trap cards in YGO cause they can't go into defense position.

Like comment if you want Harpie's Feather Duster back in the game! Seriously this card can come to 1 and be a main deck staple again.

Dzeeff, just look at the current meta. There is a reason why trap cards aren't played much right now. Why even making this video?
