Tyler, as a survivor of severe P.T.S.D. from years of the Marine Corps and a lifetime of being a Road Deputy in a large Department, the only thing that helps my PTSD injury is “MINDFULNESS”. My Great Dane Gunner would lay on me during my night terrors. Most times I would scare awake. Mindfulness comes in when you do wake, you must instantly realize your at home, your ok and your not at the scene. Smells may affect you for a while (gun powder, antifreeze, battery acid get me- car crashes and gun calls). But again, mindfulness really does help.

Yes, the InReach can be problematic in that the batteries can freeze once they get old. With ours, that we bought ten years ago, I loaned it to my brother who was taking his wife and adult daughter and son on a very wilderness alpine trek, to a lodge that was a six hour ski-in. He was finding that his didn’t work well when he tested it that winter, even though it was a slightly newer InReach, and both of ours had the original batteries. They both failed when he tried to send me a text message when he was out at the trail because the older batteries failed in freezing temperatures. I have replaced the batteries now, but we haven’t paid to activate the InReach yet as we haven’t gone on our usual wilderness canoe trip this year ( due to all the fires and smoke) so I won’t be testing it out this coming winter either, unfortunately, but I’m pretty sure a new battery won’t freeze as easily, especially if the InReach is kept against one’s body, I hope.

Once again, glad you are doing well.
@paddlefar91753 ай бұрын
Bear Spray would have stopped the Bear instantly if he had it in hand, which you should have if there is Bear scat on the trail and high grass. Bear Spray works instantly, bullets don’t unless you hit the spinal cord. He shot it several times before it stopped slashing and biting him.
@nundisclosed71353 ай бұрын
@@paddlefar9175It was already too close plus as he stated he was in the only path of escape for the bear and then he couldn't of sprayed it directly on top of him for his own sake so thankfully in this case he did have a pistol. Many, many times bears run thru the spray anyway if they're in full charge already. Bear spray is great if the bear is coming closer to you say on a trail etc but in this case I don't think it would've done him any good.
@paddlefar91753 ай бұрын
@@nundisclosed7135 You could be right about that of course, but I am very doubtful it would be statistically the case and I’ll try to explain why I think that. There have been attacks where the Bear exploded out of a concealed spot and was on the person in a few seconds. In one case the young woman had to spray over the back of her head while being bitten on her back and as soon as she deployed the spray, the attack stopped and she was not injured badly and she was able to walk back out. If his father had been carrying spray he too could have given it a dose in the face to stop it biting his son repeatedly. Even if the person getting attacked gets sprayed, or sprays themselves along with the Bear, the most important thing is to get the Bear off as quickly as possible and away from the victim, to minimize repeated serious injuries. His father did not want to shoot the Bear for fear of also hitting his son, but he could easily spray the Bear aiming the continuous stream at the Bear’s eyes and mouth. If his son got a dose too, that would suck but he’d recover. Of course it’s always good to have a high powered firearm too, along with the Bear Spray, when in Grizzly country.
@sandyjuntunen40883 ай бұрын
@@paddlefar9175 I've heard other stories when bear spray wasn't enough. Also last month an older couple was attacked at a rest stop, man used bear spray & it didn't stop him! He fought a few more minutes before running off, stole a car & drove off! I remember thinking I'll never use that for mace.
@paddlefar91753 ай бұрын
@@sandyjuntunen4088 Maybe the older man had a bad position with wind or something? There are always outlier situations, but in general, Bear Spray will stop a Bear or a person from attacking and make them want to get away from you. I think most people would be reluctant to shoot someone with a lethal firearm and so they might hesitate, which could be problematic for them, but in the case of a non lethal force like Bear Spray, one is more likely not to hesitate, and it has equal or better stopping power. A large study report that I read showed that a Bear Spray was 98% effective against Bears, so it’s probably close to that with humans if you conceal it at first and then pull it out and use it quickly. A bottle is much smaller and lighter to carry for possible Bear attack than a firearm, so your more likely to have it on your person, than a rifle that is often propped up against something, too far away.

Amazing story! Something we think of and never want to deal with but these 2 men handled it way better then me lol, thank god you survived, I spent most of my life in Alaska and an alumni of Bartlett high school, I only dealt with 1 serious inland grizzly charge but I was with the provost marshal from Fort Rich, thank god he knew what to do, just like your dad, I really enjoyed listening to your story young man , our experience with the sow grizz was 1972

You guys have no idea what it’s like to be below you in 🇨🇦 and not being allowed to be armed for these scenarios/situations . Makes no sense , being chased or attacked by a Black bear or a Moose or a Wolf or aggressive Cougar had made me re-think most of my exploration hikes and hunting adventures. Props to you , i’ve always told myself if I could I’d pack a 10mm to make sure I had enough stopping power 👌🤙

Y'all have to vote Trudeau out. I just saw a video of him while he was a teacher and he was so pro gun and "you can't take our guns away from us" and then he started attending WEF summits and adopted their policies which they promised him he would be PM. Now he wants everyone's guns.

Saw the first video when they were waiting for the chopper after the encounter. I was one of the fools who initially thought the bear was alive and just pondering the moment before moving on. Clearly, I'm no hunter.

Such an unfortunate event. It’s not like the bear stalked them then proceeded to attack. It was probably sleeping and was startled by 2 scary humans. It probably could’ve been avoided if the guys were making more noise while walking through the tall grass, a place where bears like to hide. Sounds like the Dad made enough noise to deter it but his Kid didn’t make a sound from what it sounded like from the interview. Brown bears are such beautiful magnificent Powerful creatures. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad they are both o.k. . It’s just unfortunate the bear was killed in the incidental confrontation.

@@michaelsamuel4159 that’s the caliber. The type of projectiles can make a huge difference. Hard cast bullets are ideal for animals that size, you want maximum penetration to get to the vitals.

@@susanbengston3208 rifles can be used for both hunting and defence from animals. PH’s in Africa and guides in Alaska will use rifles to defend themselves against charging animals. Rifles tend to have a lot more power than a handgun, and that’s what you want. Stopping power!
