In this video I offer my unbiased and honest review of the Sammy Hagar Best Of All Worlds Tour/Concert that was in Nashville, TN on 8/28/24. I have been a lifelong Van Halen fan and have seen the band over 15 times. I have been to a Van Halen sound check many years ago and have studied the music of Van Halen and guitar style of Eddie Van Halen almost my entire life. I am also a deciple of Joe Satriani, as he is one of my biggest influences and favorite players. Having said that, I was not going to attend this show, but was given a free ticket the day before so I could not refuse! Overall I enjoyed the show, and the musicianship was great and it was a fun time.... but that's not saying there weren't some hiccups along the way. I know this video is long, but I am long winded and wanted to discuss everything I had taken notes on and wanted to point out. Anyways, I hope you enjoy the video and my perspective. I would love to hear your thoughts, comments and reviews as well. Please subscribe!

I'm 39 (1985). I obviously wasn't around or old enough for the bulk of Van Halen. I didn't get into this through my parents or anything. I found this all on my own. I've been to every tour since 2002ish regardless of the line up. One thing I keep reminding myself and I try to do this daily, weekly, monthly basis etc, and also one of the reasons I love Right Now so much is the message to live life to the fullest. Take advantage of every day as much as possible because tomorrow isn't promised. These guys are in their 70s just having fun playing the music they've made over the past 50 years. Its hard to not be so critical but at certain point you need to just relax and enjoy the ride (show). Were there better choices for guitar? Probably. We want to hear Eddie and someone play like Eddie. Aside from Wolfie, no one is going to satisfy that void. By having someone like Joe do it, you get an extremely capable musician to put his twist on the songs while still retaining the key elements. I look at this like Zakk playing Dime songs. Zakk plays Dime in Zakks style ans theres no one I'd rather have play Pantera licks. Its a tribute! To the people complaining about the prices, dont go! Life is about choices. This tour is about memories. I was at this show and had an absolute blast. I doubt there will be another but if there is, I'm there. Ill take a bunch of 70 year olds playing Van Halen over anything made today, hands down.

Got to see them here in Colorado at Red Rocks. I'm in my 50's and even though I've seen Van Halen several times with DLR, I never had the opportunity to see Sammy play before so I was all in. The Red Rocks show was incredible and gave me probably my final opportunity to see Sammy perform his songs and the Van Hagar -era songs performed. I personally loved it and thought it was worth the price of admission. For me it was also a great way to get some closure on what is possibly the end of this era of live VH performances. Keeping in mind that Sammy is 76, and Joe is 67.

It's my old age...But in the 70s & 80s concert tickets were $7.00 to $15.00 max . later in the 80s concert tickets were $20 +. Now they want us to pay several hundred dollars 💵💵💵💵 for a ticket to thousands of you get VIP TICKETS... insane... Now I also recall seeing a few classical music Orchestras The BSO my wife and I had tickets in the 90s just basic ones this one time when Charles Winchester From MASH TV show.. David Stiers was a guest conductor... RIP David... There was an extra fee for VIP meet and Greet... But he invited everyone to stay and discuss the concert...for FREE. Great. There was a Warehouse Club in Baltimore when I lived there HAMMER JACKS 2 Floors...Huge indoor Rock Concerts ...Cheap Tickets... Most of these bands aren't the original members..plus you have BACKING TRACKS... ie we are paying to watch a band FAKE IT....See The new Motley Crue... You had great seats... We had moved to Annapolis for several years. Before retirement early retirement. Moved to the Del Mar VA Eastern Shore... Probably moving South in the near future... Yeah I get Joe is not Eddie Van Halen.... Yeah 👍 .... Cheers 🍻 🥃🥃 🎸 🎵🎶🎶🎶 oh yeah Happy Labor Day 😎 ☀️ ⛱️ 🌊 🏝️ 🏔️

Saw them last week…most fun I’ve had at a show in years. Was thrilled to hear songs that I’ve never seen live with Sammy or Van Halen before…I’ve never seen Satch before and enjoyed his take. I also went in knowing it was his spin on it and not a note for note take. They all busted their butts onstage in the Texas heat. I’d see it again in a heartbeat.

The guitar player for Lover Boy kicked on a cocked wah sound for all his solos. Thats why his sound was so midrangy. He was using it as a solo boost. At our concert I could see him step on his pedalboard to kick it on and off.

I really liked your analysis. One aspect of this that’s worth noting is that I think Sammy has a lot of authority in the decision making on the set, the tone, the song choices, style etc. One real important observation - at an early show in this tour, Satch went off script at the end of “Top of the World” and played the guitar part for dancing the night away. He might have even done the tapping harmonics. Those songs are incredibly close rhythmically and chordally, and I think Satch realized it and wanted to surprise Sammy and the band. Sammy made a very surprised comment and might have even called Satriani a name, playfully. But that moment was never repeated at any other show that I could find. I wonder why. It was a cool nod and I wished the players had been more free to explore. I think Joe is a big fan. He said that much and stated that he never learned the EVH stuff so he wouldn’t inadvertently copy it. Appreciate the respect.

That's cool Joe did that improv! Yeh... on a much smaller scale I can relate to Joe. When you totally absorb yourself into your career or one zone, you may be able to appreciate a player or band but not really know the stuff as a guitarist. I'm like that with a lot of stuff. Hes done his own thing for so long and developed his style. Which is exactly what he should have done all along. 😎🎸

Hey Marty I enjoyed most of your analysis however i don't agree with a lot of it. First of all I too miss Eddie! He was a once in a lifetime guitarist. Joe will never be Eddie and Eddie could never be Joe. All the little nuances that you refer too are special to Eddie and Sammy but not that big a deal to everyone else.Me included. I too was concerned when i saw the Howard Stern gig. However i did buy my Red Rocks tickets the very next day and i live outside of New Orleans. Joe is an amazing guitar virtuoso and I was very curious about his approach to playing this music which he purposely never learned to play before. I'm 63yrs old and saw VH on the first tour. I also saw them with Sammy on 5150 tour. I felt that they went from being individuals to an actual team or band of musicians. DLR was only about himself. Mikey was in my opinion the glue that held the band together and with his backing vocal prowess made van halens music amazing. As the band grew greed set in. I think what Eddie and Al did to Mikey is unforgivable and showed i side of Eddie no one of his fans want to face. I always think about what they would have done musically if they never broke up with sammy............Now, the BOAW tour gives us a glimmer of the old school rock scene that the world actually longs for. This is NOT a TRIBUTE band! This band is amazing in its own right. For the record they tune down a whole step on everything so sammy can sing it. Remember he's 76 yrs old. BTW the guitarist for Loverboy is 78! Marty all i'm trying to tell you is that you should appreciate what you got to see and enjoy free or not simply for the musicianship and a chance to see half of VH that still lives! Ed and AL did nothing after Sammy left and could never move forward. IT proves that your only as good as all the parts of the team. Greed and EGO destroyed this band. It's sad.............i'm sure Alex's book will say all the same things. BItterness will rule the day...........sad sad! kudos for realizing how good it was and what is wasn't!

I hear ya man. I see it from a different perspective. Eddie lost his band. His wife. His health. His hip lol. Got cancer. Swung back into addiction and messed up his life and almost lost the respect of his son. In the meantime Sammy and Mike went out and did the other half and showed videos during Poundcake with a Van Halen guitar getting drilled in the screen behind the band. 😂. Strange times. Wolfgang got Eddie clean and got that band back together. If Wolfgang would not have done that then Eddie probably would have died. So began VH with Wolfgang. Never was the same after that. Not saying Eddie was a saint. But there's other perspectives to their disfunctional camp. It's sad really.

Red Rocks and St Louis a couple of songs seemed to drag in parts at Red Rocks. St Louis wanted to go cause I new last show they would let in all hang out. Joe is my #2 favorite guitarist so this was dream show for me with Eddie gone. But it is true that Eddie never played 'exactly' like the albums (especially 2004 😢) I LOVED the Joe takes on EVH and willing to bet Ed was pleased with him being true to himself as well. It is always nice to hear those special Eddie moments, maybe a few more EVH moments like the tappng harmonics would have been some nice 'tributes' to the king. But overall, I was just happy to hear Eddies music again. ONLY ED can do Ed though. Wolfie, AMAZINGLY TALENTS, (have seen him 8 times) wouldn't even "copy" his dad. All this IMHO, just sit back and enjoy.

I agree with most of what you said in this video.....Also a longtime VH fan and drummer. I caught this show in Houston..........I went into the show thinking that Jason/Kenny & Joe had a tough assignment.....Trying to replicate Alex and Ed and to your point, that's impossible. The brothers were just something special & magical. And I found myself wishing Jason/Kenny & Joe could have better replicated the VH vibe........At times it did feel like they 'phoned it in' For the show I saw, it felt like Best Of Both Worlds was a little life-less. Generally I wish Joe would have used different gear to get closer to Eddies tones - Those Ibanez guitars lack warmth in my opinion. And THANK YOU for mentioning that Joe only used the Frank for non-VH tunes (I thought I was the only person to notice that!) Why bring the Frank out for MAS TEQUILA of all songs - This was sold as tribute to Ed and VH, so my expectations were aimed at something closer to honoring the brothers and the music they created.

I’ve seen Van Halen, Van Hagar, Sammy solo, Sammy and the Circle, and Joe solo tour. You are right about Vic. He does just fine with Eddie’s parts, but he’s not a brand name like Joe is. Joe helps pack the arenas. Sammy has always had great tone. He keeps it pretty simple… Gibson into a Marshall.

The basic blues shredding on Summer Nights is a Cardinal Sin. I love Joe and he's a million times the player I'll ever be, but come on man. Not one lick he played was even reminiscent of what Eddie did on arguably the coolest song of the Hagar era. It just bums me out to see them throw their hands up and say "no one will ever be Eddie." Like yeah, obviously. But at least try, especially if you're charging ludicrous ticket prices.

"Joe's intro has never been spectacular"...dude, it's bad. It's a wreck. Doesn't let the power chord parts ring out and the pick slide sounds like mine - wrong tone and wrong execution, it's hard to listen to (every time) not fun and flowing. Bad. Literally don't play it Joe, I love ya but sorry it's Eddie so he comes first. Joe 5150 - yeah that intro AND the solo are off every time I've heard..again, love Joe but this is THE best VH song imo and man it sucks that one of the greatest guitar players on the planet isn't getting it right..again, sounds like me. The solo is way off, bummer.

Hey Marty, Been a subscriber to your channel for a while and love what you do and appreciate your passion for VH. My son and I went to the show in Alpharetta (ATL) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4GwmIVomLB9rassi=jtWaU2G9w7TGhqGM back in June and we too really enjoyed the show, but also noticed some of the same things you noticed. I bought in early when the tour was announced and bought tickets when they went on sale last fall, then I saw the Stern show and I was concerned like you. You are so right about so much of what you said about the show, and you picked up alot more on the technical side of the guitar mixes and choices Satch made, I too couldn't figure out why he didn't use the Frank on any of the VH songs, and would have rather heard Summer Song over Satch Boogie. Good Enough was definitely too slow there in Nashville, surprised that Kenny didnt have a click. 5150 was a little choppy to me also and that is also one of my faves. When they played Right Now it sounded like they were off a half a beat or so too. I think it just goes to show the depth of Ed and Al's musicianship when you have some of the top talent in the world still struggling to get the feel/swing that they played with such ease. To me Mike was the back bone of the show, so much of what we hear in VH is his harmonies and vocals. To hear him again on Ain't talking about love, Runaround, 5150, heck, all of them, along with Sammy, was what made the hair on my arms stand up. Jason was of course playing when we saw them and an encore with Rock n Roll would have been awesome since he had his dad's image on his kick drums. Since Satch got to showcase Satch Boogie, I thought it would have been cool to let Jason tear into Moby Dick, but RnR would have rocked. Sorry for the long comment but really enjoyed your review and wanted to chime in somewhere. Oh yeah Sammy of course killed it, first saw him in 84 on the VOA tour and he has always delivered a great show, amazing that he still has the pipes. I think he has always been one of those frontmen who tries to genuinely connect with an audience.

53, Marty. And I started with my love for Van Halen around 82 - when I was not quite 12 yet. Diver Down. My cousin Paula gave me her old stereo, which was not a power-house. But it sounded pretty darn good. And Diver Down was the thing then. I didn't get it quite yet. Once Jump came out... I freaked out. Had the new Stereo I was putting together each of the last coupe Christmases. So I was all set by Christmas of 83. And as soon as '84 came out... my Mom and Dad took me down to the record store. I picked up '84 and The Scorpions I think - Love at First Sting (or either it was Def Lep... Got that around the same time too). But '84 BLEW MY MIND. I had already been into Driver Down pretty big. So yeah - then I "joined" Columbia House.... like every other Rocking Kid back in the day. And I grabbed all of the first 5 records. I was stunned. I listened to to them for the next year straight, along wit4h several other records. LOL Got em' all on cassette. Then CD, eventually. Meanwhile, I cried like a little school girl when DLR quit. And then..... Sammy came in, and they BLEW MY MIND a second time! Man 0- I loved them even more. I though the music was even better. I'm a Lifer. I'm a VH Freak. EVH and Van Halen have gone with me everywhere. mY entire Life. All the highs. The lows. Everything. They still do. I saw them Live - probably 15 times. Loved every single show I ever went to. Roth REALLY turned me off the last 3 or 4 shows I saw. But hey - it was still EVH and AVH. I want to see this show - bad. I want to go to Vegas and see them. But I don't know. I'm trying to send the Kids to college. LOL I don't know if I can drop the cash to see it. For me - this is it. This is the last little piece of VH. But..... I don't know.

Don't forget there is a ton of people who are only familiar with Van Halen from Sammy's days with the group , many are absolutely clueless about Van Halen's earlier material which boggles my mind but it's true . When I say what do you think about the solo in "When Push comes to shove" they never heard of that song before , how on earth can you be a VH fan and not be familiar with "Fair Warning" but to my shock they aren't . For people like that, there's no doubt they will probably be pleased to hear some songs from the Hagar era because that's what they're familiar with . To people who are die hard Van Halen fans from the early days back on the sunset strip it's much much much harder sell .

I saw them the night b4 8/27/24 @ Riverbend in Cincy... IDK bc it was outdoors, but IMHO the mix was horrible, all the bass freq's were MUD... anything Joe played on the lower strings got lost, and Kenny's Dbl-Kicks were way to loud as well... Totally Agree that the Ibanez tone was not good, and the new special Amps didn't help.

appreciate the honest review. If Ed was not mentioned during this show that is uber disappointing. I think we need to be honest this is all about Sammy, as I am a die hard VH (the entire catalog) I am finding it harder and harder to like Sammy. It seems every time he speaks it's annoying. He is either pitching some new liquor or referencing that no one (Al/Wolf) reached back to him about this tour. Get past it already and move on dude. There is still not a day that goes by that I am not listening to a VH song or trying to play it on guitar and that will never change but every time I hear Sammy speak now it is like an ice pick is being driven through my ears. I can totally see why Al or Wolf would not call him back.

I went to the show in NJ. I really enjoyed it. Some of the things you mentioned about Joes guitar tone is correct. Sounded kind of weird in the mix on some songs. Overall I went in knowing this wasn't going to be a note for note, trying to replicate Eddie on the songs. Jason and Mike Sounded great and were having fun. I also agree that they really didn't have any Eddie visuals on the screen but like you said, probably due to legal issues or respect to Alex. Overall I thought it was great. It has been mostly the same set all tour. Sammy pretty much only played Panama, Ain’t Talkin’ ‘bout Love, and Jump from the Dave era even when he was in Van Halen. Sometimes they’d have Mike sing Somebody Get Me A Doctor as well. Would love to see them play other DLR-era songs, but that is very unlikely. Maybe Wolfgang will decide to do a tour playing Van Halen songs someday. I know he wants to make his own mark and he doesn’t owe us anything, but it would be cool to see.

One of my friends and I have been musical brothers since we were kids and have seen VH and Sam a bunch of times. I, like you, have seen all versions of Sammy and VH since 5150. That friend I mentioned barely made the trip because his mother was really sick and he cried during "Eagles Fly". All 4 of us had a magical night. Sammy ALWAYS brings it. Judgement Day, 5150, and Seventh Seal were my highlights. Ah, now that sounds like a guitar players review! With you on most of what you said, particularly the tempo of Good Enough and the closer surprisingly not being a more uptempo choice. Disagree about Joes tone though, it absolutely crushed it thruout with those new amps he’s using for the 1st time here, even for spots where the original tone might’ve had a bit different ambience, his tone with those amps was so big and gutsy, it worked every time for me. Also loved 5150 myself and thought Joe nailed the spirit of that great tune while still having his own personality in spots. Great review!

You're spot on with your review Marty and I had the exact same thoughts. The Stern show was not a stellar performance. Basically, still in rehearsal quality form. Not tight. I'm a guitarist for 38 years and know what tight is. Thoughts on the Stern show: Not tight but that's OK sometimes in a loose setting. Also I thought Satriani was not playing the parts right. Eddie's iconic guitar parts need to be note for note, style to style like the records. Anything less is sloppy and irresponsible. Bar band VH tributes do better. I also thought Vic Johnson from "The Circle" played Van Halen songs better. Maybe not perfect but had Van Halen vibes. I also don't think Jason played Alex's drum parts exactly right. I have seen a few Live concerts on KZbin and each show gets a little better but is still not tight like it should be. I think it would have been better to rehearse for 6 months longer and get every aspect tight as can be. Even John Lennon said basically about a Beatles reunion that 'people think we can just instantly get back together again but it would take us 7 months to get back in form'. Best of all would have been Sammy, Michael, Wolfgang, and Alex. Next best Jason instead of Alex (who wanted no part of it). I respect his wishes.

No one is branding this as VH even though 1/2 the Hagar VH is here, making it far more legit than Roth solo (and Roth cannot sing anymore). Alex was asked, didn't even respond. Wolfgang who appears to own all rights to all things VH, has said nothing derogatory even gave it his approval. Much the Hagar VH just got buried. Even VH's last album w/Roth was all redone demos from '76....much from the Gene Simmons recorded demos. Eddie didn't seem to want to waste newly written songs on Roth!

EVH and Satch are complete polar opposites. Satch is a great musician, extremely learned but there are 'musical laws' he lives by. EVH never read that book, he wrote his own and was never constrained by those rules. Much of what EVH did musically makes no sense to trained musicians yet it works. Ed's mantra was "If it sounds good, it is good" learned from a professor at Pasadena community college in a scoring and composing course both he and Alex took.

So after a few day for it to sink in.. and editing a bunch of videos from myself and other KZbin clips from the Cincinnati show .. here is my report on the Sammy hagar "Best of all worlds show" Over 90 degrees, backed up traffic from 2 separate accidents, red rocker beer sold out before we even got there.. and the insane price of $50 for a shirt... and I still walked away happy. First , Jason being replaced ( best to you and your family) Kenny was a beast!. Only one rehearsal and an iPad with the drumming charts and it was like he was on this tour from the start! Lil'(Mad) Michael Anthony.. what a talent! The unsung hero of Van Halen from the start, his harmonies and insane range did not disappoint, Rai Thistlelthwayte.. fantastic also, filling out the sound but not distracting the ear a perfect addition! Sammy the craziest AARP card carrying rocker still has it.. I would swear he was in his 40's not 70's the way he commanded the stage and audience... and then there is Joe... I have been a fan of Joe since I first got his surfing with the alien cd.. and was lucky enough to see both my active guitar heros this year Joe and Nuno Benttencort. Joe was perfect.. he played eddie right.. all the notable riffs, solo runs but under it all it was Joe..that Joe groove, in an eddie flavor. You couldn't do it any other way and be honest to the music and yourself. The highlight for me was 5150 ... its my fav eddie riff and fav halen song. It was a hot sweaty fantastic event I was proud to witness... and yeah I did fork out the $50 for a shirt... because im a sucker like that....

You have a Van Halen tattoo on your arm and your channel has 5150 in it. You yourself said you have been to around 15 shows with Edward as the guitar player. So your absolutely 100% biased. You would have been better served doing this review of someone thats never heard Van Halen before. You should have taken an unbiased friend and then asking them if they had a good time and if they thought the music was good. There are too many hatters out here. Edward is gone. Hes never coming back. Just enjoy they music. Or you could just listen to a mp3 and reminisce. Either way this is not a well served review.
