Great videos, I now you said its better to run your PA in mono but i am a keyboard player at a church and use various stereo sounds that come from an interface connected to my macbook pro so i believe stereo is the way to go for me. Im also in the process of running backing tracks during the live worship sessions and I wanted to know if you Sr. could point me in the right direction. My question is how do i send the click to the monitors only for the band to hear and the other tracks to the FOH?

XLR is typically used for MIC level inputs. TRS is Line level. Two different animals. The preamp is looking for specific different levels coming into these two inputs.
@tlthomas778 жыл бұрын
The balanced XLR and the balanced TRS connectors are not the same. The XLR connection is coupled through a transformer and is lower impedance than the TRS. The XLR is a MIC level input and the TRS is a LINE level input. The both go to the same input stage but they are not electrically the same. A LINE level signal will overdrive a MIC level input.
@reginaldwalton11 жыл бұрын
Great info., thanks. I just purchased an Allen & Heath mixer and this helps quite a bit.
@rcboatdriver123411 жыл бұрын
TRS may very well be balanced, however the XLR is usually considered better not only for the signal derogation factors but also because in a consumer level mixing console the MIC preamp's are generally much better and the 1/4 inch TRS lines are commonly overlooked. With a Mackie I think that I would trust the 1/4 inch preamp's though...

Great video. I am a guitarist and have never had to worry about mixers before, but will be getting one soon to assist with solo work. Cleared up a lot of basic questions. I do have one question though. On a mixer with effects. Are you limited to only one effect for all the channels if there is only onboard effects and one effect knob. In other words I couldn’t ass reverb to vocals and chorus to the guitar?

Some boards have one effect, some have more. The effects can be assigned to specific channels, also you can add external effects using the insert on the channel.

with this specific board would you use a compressor or effects board for a band?....and how do you set the gain on you powered speakers...I have mackies there is also wide and low cut buttons on the back of my speakers???
@asplinprofessionalrecordin16839 жыл бұрын
+Marc Poirier For a band a board with built in compressors would be a great place to start especially for a band with a drum set or new musicians who tend to be more dynamic with their playing, however it is very tempting to start using compression on everything, or to overly apply it, that can be a quick mix destroyer. If down the road you want effects an outboard effects processor can be purchased for around $50. With your speakers, keeping them as close to +-0 is best, if it doesn't offer +-0 and offers an ascending value then 1/2 is a good place to start, if is a descending scale then 3/4 would be a good place to start. For filters, unless you know exactly what you are doing, leaving them alone is typically best.

I've been in bands (pub rock mostly) for many years. I've rarely had the chance to run the PA as it's usually been someone else's gear. Just wondering: is unity gain on the meter (i.e. green) the best level, or is the first yellow, or the top of the yellow the best level? I suppose you want headroom, so top yellow is pushing it. My previous drummer used to go for the first yellow light as a general guide.
@lightwayacoustics9 жыл бұрын
I have one question??? on our board at church we have the option to use sub-channels just like on this board you used to demonstrate with... but it has a third button other then 1-2 and 3-4 but below that is L-R.. what happens if you turn that on also??? like i understand the reasoning for wanting to have maybe all of the drums in a sub-mix because you can can change everything with one fader.. but what does L-R do??
@kneejerkreactionuk8 жыл бұрын
Pressing the L-R button in will send the signal straight to the main outputs, bypassing the subgroups. Some people prefer it that way.
@mnash310 жыл бұрын
I'll have to finish watching later, but so far I am learning some good information. Thanks for sharing.... I am actually in the process of researching a PA system. Is there any advantage of a tabletop mixer over a powered box? I am currently looking at the yamaha 5016cf and the 512. Both I think are more than what I need, but I don't get the power with the smaller systems or the additional features. Any feedback would be great.
@ezpk-9 жыл бұрын
mnash3 Transport, really. If you're lugging a mixer anywhere you don't want to have 20 pounds of extra metal to carry in the form of a power supply.
@mnash39 жыл бұрын
Jake Taylor - Thanks for the feedback. I am still researching systems. For transport, i think i was thinking moreso of the case to protect the investment. As for the weight, i was hoping to use one of those universal dollies. For now, i am leaning very much towards the behringer xr18 as it might be more of my speed. I am still doing research so feel free to share your experience if u want. Thanks again for the feedback....

Hi Jim. What is the purpose of the echo knobs on the mixer? I have a mixer it has input for mic. guitar and sound etc... beside the gain knobs. they have echo (delay, repeat hi,low, mid). and music knob on the model. It make me really confused. In fact I don't have much knowledge on the sound system. Please teach me how.Thank you.

If I use balanced (XLR) cables going out of my DJ mixer into a sound board, would I need to connect one cable out from the left and right sockets, or will one cable suffice to make the sound stereo? What I did last time was use two cables (one in each socket) and plugged into two separate channels on the sound board. However I'm wondering if it is already stereo since I am using balanced cables and I hook up just one cable.
@dennisjones899110 жыл бұрын
One "balanced" cable carries 1 signal, you have a ground, and a positive and negative. Hence you need 2 cables (with the XLR's) to carry a stereo signal from your DJ board to the mains mixer.

Is it better to play an iPod through the rca's or through a 1/4? Is there any benefit to running it through two separate channels? I have a 1/8" to xlr cable that was made for me. Would that be good to use? What is the best set-up for sound?
@robbymcswain515111 жыл бұрын
1/8 to XLR might only give you one side of the stereo track ( left or right channel) depending on how it was wired. You can use the RCA's or 1/4 barrel, and also two separate channels, panned left and right, its really up to you, what ever sound your happy with.
@Hanysbigomoth10 жыл бұрын
One thing with an 1/8 inch to XLR cable off topic, if you use it with a console always check that you 48+v rails are off or you will fry the output transistors on your iPod. That's why these cables are less common than 1/4 > 1/8 as 1/4 input's run a separate input stage that doesn't utilize Phantom power.
@robbymcswain515110 жыл бұрын
Tubzy_606 Good thing to know!
@dennisjones899110 жыл бұрын
if you play your ipod thru the stereo channel, you will have the stereo channel controlled by only one set of controls, where if you use the individual channel, you have to use two, one for left and one for right. These have 1/4 inch TSR's that can be used either balanced or unbalanced. The rca is for tape in for music during an intermission (example only).
