Thanks for this information. It has cleared up a couple things that had been confusing me. I have only bought two hex LED fixtures so far with 4 channel modes with 6, 10, 12 and 18 channels each, but all I really need is probably 12 or less. Won’t be doing much strobing. That was what was confusing the heck out of me. I was looking at the DMX Operator and now I see that each fixture can have up to 16 channels with the A/B option. Even though I’m familiar with MIDI in a musical aspect which has similarities the information out there on DMX is hard to get straight. Mainly because most the manuals with the intelligent lighting fixture and controllers are very lacking. They take you about half way and stop. It’s like a bad date. LOL.

I've been looking through tons of videos and this one was the most helpful. I have the 4 Bar, 4 Play, 6 Spot, Intimidator Wave, 2 Circus lights and a Swarm along with 4 Chauvet Geysers. I need to set them all up, program them and have complete control. If theres any other videos that would help me, please let me know. Playing guitar and running lights on stage is difficult enough and this DMX new technology is overwhelming.

these lights would make great effects with fog or faze or haze. I have a moonflower effect light and pointed it to a wall in a big hall, you could see all the colored beams moving about everywhere. My opinion is that moonflower lights are better with fog. Great video though, it helped a lot.

if you want more than 1 fixture to do the same thing, it can be the same address, ie your 2&3 light are doing the same thing they could be the same address, so could 1&4. my band uses this same dmx controller and we have a ton of lights, 2 different sizes of par cans, color strip minis, moonflowers, moving heads, lighted name sign, uplights, and we've only used half of the fixture buttons.

Hi Jim! thanks for all the valuable and clear info on DMX. I'm struggling to find a controller that's good for doing lights for a band. I've done lighting before but I'm my strength is hitting buttons in sync with the band and not knowing what board will keep it fun and easy to change being direction control of lights or grouped lights. I've programmed dmx scenes and chases for scanners. Right now I have 8 LED par cans, a Shimp Purple Green laser, The Swarm 5FX, DMX Hazer, and the rest are non DMX. I'm nearing the purchase of two 30W LED moving heads. As you can see by the lights I mentioned I'm doing small venues/bars for bands and I also DJ Proms/Weddings. Do you recommend a board for mixing both Pars and intelligent lights, I've been thinking perhaps two separate boards would be easier and provide smoother transitions? I love being able to fade par lights randomly and also punch them with the full on button per channel, I'm all about the manual fun BUT I enjoy blending chases over that. Chases with speed control, music mode, tap sync would be great. Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

along with what Jarron was asking, so I am thinking of setting up a very similar controller, the Obey40. I am thinking that the Par cans used for uplighting could all be on one fixture, say fixture 1, with half the Par cans set to address 1 and the other starting at address 9... this would let page A and B control each "group" of Pars, so every other one could be different... just giving more options should 12 fixture buttons not be enough someday. I will also be having other Par lighting, but they will be on a truss and probably be in pairs. That leads into my next question, if I have pairs of lights that I want to be doing the same thing, I use a fixture button, and then give both/all the lights the same address, say 17 for fixture button 2??? I plan to use some par cans in pairs, also a pair of Mini Kinta lights, a pair of Pinspot lights, and possibly a pair of scanner type lights, along with a 4Play CL (maybe a pair), a 4Bar Flex, a Mega Strobe 12FX, and some others, like maybe a laser or 2. I am looking into getting the Obey40 and a Chauvet fog machine that will work together, and wondering if the strobe button will be of use, since the strobe I'm considering is a DMX light... so much to ponder and learn about. When I daisy chain the lights on the DMX chain, it doesn't matter in what order the lights are wired, just the address the light is set to respond to, right? And the last light in the chain gets the terminator plugged into the DMX out? One last subject, scenes, chases, and sound active mode... so I can program 8 scenes, for each bank, use those scenes in series as chases, and then come back and activate individual scenes, or use a chase to play through a set of scenes? can I set it to use sound to switch through the parts of the program? Like a chase switching scenes to the beat? I want to be able to make programs of the lights doing things, like all going to blue, or all strobing together at the same time.... and then still have the light show "dance" to the music. Thanks so much for the pair of videos, they cleared up a lot, got me thinking, and gave me a head full of new questions.... sorry for the book...LOL

Thanks for the helpful video! I assigned my two fixtures, one at 1 and the other is set at 17 DMX channel. Now when controlling fixture 1 and programming to the desired effect the fixture does not remain at the same setting when trying to control just fixture 2. You know why?

question: I'm new to this and I may have missed it, but how does the controller know which fixture is which. Example: if the second fixture is set to address 17, how does the controller know to control the light that is set to 17 when you hit fixture 2 ?? hope this isn't too confusing.

I'm an extreme newbie and I got the DMX Operator that you are running. The reason I got that board was because it has MIDI control that I can set to work with a click track in Pro Tools... However, our theater system is a five pin DMX and the Operator runs three pin. I got a conversion for it and tried to get it to work with the setup they had but no lights are lighting up. Do you see any problems other than Operator Error on my part? If so, it'd be nice to know before I try anything else.

Hi' Thanks for your info just wondered if you may be able to advise us. We run a Ledj S1 Controller with Ledj stratos LED Panels we us them on automatic button settings on the controller . I have an unbranded Panel light dmx 512 and don't know if I can get it to work with the other panels and controller? it has a 4 button address unlike the Ledj which is 3 can I somehow get them to work together to operate the same colour program? Hello I am a freshman at out school and we are starting a show choir and I'm in the high school band we have always used the same setting for our concerts but to my knowledge and teachers knowledge our stage lights have never worked properly they are the old inconsistent lights and we have a bijou light board and this past week it has flip flopped all the top channels to the bottom row, also I would like to know how to program the rest if the light because none of the back and front stage lights work?

Hi, I'm wondering if u could help me. I recently bought a swarm 5 FX and Obey 4 controller with a DMX cable. But I thought that once u set the light to d001 on the light that you can start using the RGBW/A manually. But it doesn't seem to work. It's just a standard DMX cable I have but was told to get an XLR lighting cable instead. I didn't think there was much of a difference. Is there something I am doing wrong with the set up. I have always had more issues with ADJ lights. I have had this happen in the past, and had to walk through addressing it again. Also try a different address. Of course try the usual, new cable, power on and off, and a different light.

Put all the ones you want to be in sync on the same channel, once they are on the same channel they will do the same things when you control them.

Ahh right, well it depends on the light. I would recommend a lighting bar such as the KAM Partybar. It has programmes built in and all the lights are synced so it's easy to use and doesn't need a controller.
