They use a set of "Marksaktpeifen" the German Bag Pipe. It is pretty similiar to a Scottish Back pipe but has another internal Structure with makes it less linear and sounds more orientalic. Also the Chanter is adapted to be used like a recorder flute. There are only reproductions out there that are made after old Paintings as the Knowledge how to make them was lost. The other Pipe is not a Back Pipe. Its a Uilleann Pipe. You do not Blow into this Instrument, you use your ellbow to operate a bellows that blows Air into the Sack. That and the Tune is different to a Backpipe as well. It is told that these are the hardest set of Pipes you can play, due to the coordination you need to press the bellow, press the Sack and play the Chanter. They are also less loud so you can play them indoors. And the Singer is playing a Cittern not a Mandolin. Fun Fact: They are also in the Computergame Gothic with the Song Herr Mannelig. The Song is only in the German version of the Game.

I'm German and I saw a TV report here in the country that was about the band. I think I remember it being said that the band's instruments were specially made by a master craftsman in the field of instrument making. Some of the instruments are not in their original condition and have been adapted to the wishes of the members who play them. In Extremo many songs are played in foreign languages, in this case Gaelic which originally comes from Scotland. Have a nice day... =D
