At last more melodic death! I'm into thrash primarily but totally dig this genre. Some other suggestions to check out : Mors principium est - inhumanity In flames - jester race Dark tranquillity - punish my heaven Soilwork - weapon of vanity Insomnium - Mortal share

In Flames were the leaders of the Gothenburg sound that produced so many bands from Sweden, like Opeth, The Haunted, At The Gates, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Katatonia, Dark Tranquility, etc. Initially, they were just a project formed by guitarist Jesper Stromblad... Mikael Stanne (of Dark Tranquility) did the vocals for the first recordings in 1994... Then, vocalist Anders Friden and drummer Bjorn Gelotte (who switched to guitars in 1999) joined by 1996 for the 'Jester Race' album, followed by the 'Whoracle' album in 1997... Bassist Peter Iwers and drummer Daniel Svensson joined and made In Flames blossom sonically in 1999 w/ the 'Colony' album, followed by 'Clayman' in 2000, which put In Flames on the map in heavy metal. These are considered their best records by the hardcore In Flames fans... Going for a bit more mainstream appeal, more electronic sounds were used on 'Reroute to remain' in 2002... 'Cloud connected' became a successful single off the album... Chart success came fast after the 'Soundtrack to your escape' album in 2004 which got some MTV airplay and 'Come Clarity' in 2006 (#58 on US charts)... 'A sense of purpose' hit #28 on the US charts in 2008. Unfortunately, alcohol abuse led to founding guitarist Jesper Stromblad leaving In Flames by 2010. Recording as a 4-piece, 'Sounds of a playground fading' was released in 2011 and hit #27 on US chart, but fans grumbled that the band was losing their edge... Niclas Engelin was tapped as In Flames' new guitarist for the tour and recorded the album 'Siren charms' in 2014 which charted at #26, but marked a less metal sound... drummer Daniel Svensson left the band in 2015. Bassist Peter Iwers left after the 'Battles' album in 2016, which was a more commercial In Flames album... 'I, the Mask' was released in 2019 w/ bassist Bryce Paul and drums by Tanner Wayne and Joe Rickard, but it marked a decline in popularity, charting at #121. Guitarist Niclas Engelin was dismissed soon after. In Flames are due out w/ a new album in 2022 - the band currently has Friden (vocals), Gelotte (guitars), Bryce Paul (bass), Tanner Wayne (drums) and Chris Broderick (guitar). Meanwhile, ex-In Flames members have formed their own band The Halo Effect, will release their debut album 'Days of the Lost' in 2022... the band is: Jesper Stromblad & Niclas Engelin (guitars), Peter Iwers (bass), Daniel Svensson (drums) and Mikael Stanne (of Dark Tranquility) on vocals.

You should check out their album "Whoracle." It's their most complete album as a melodic death metal band before they went the way of using a heavier portion of synth. My friend and I would debate "Whoracle" or "Colony" and we always came to a stalemate. So they are both great albums in their own rights.

Mid to late 90s into the mid 00s In Flames was the best metal band on Earth in my opinion. I got into them in 98 or 99. I just remember I was at lunch in High School and a friend of mine puts his portable cd player down in front of me and told me to listen. It was the Whoracle album, which was the album before this one. That weekend I bought every album that was out to that point. The next album Clayman is in my opinion their best album but like the next 3 albums after that, a live CD in Tokyo and double live DVD was them at their peak and they were untouchable. After that... not so much. I saw them once when they were at their height and they were relentless. One of those shows where I was beyond exhausted by the end. This was one of the breather songs to catch your breath with in the set list. I wish I had a time machine to see that show again. God, they were great.

I just love old inflames, brings back memories of my youth. Its too bad inflames got watered down after their guitar Jasper player left. I am just happy the new inflames is back to form, i highly recommend checking out "state of decay" and "the great deceiver".

All northern Europeans excelled in metal. But the Swedes are the kings of groove. Entombed is another perfect example. I love more than 50 bands from Sweden. Their doom death was also awesome and of course Bathory influenced countless bands around the world.

If I am honest, this is the most complete album from In Flames and the one I go back to most. It helps that I saw them first on tour right after its release and they destroyed. I can compile a single better album from both, whoracle and jester race but I feel like Colony is the peak of groove and experiment without falling over the edge. With Clayman they continued to straddle the edge starting to slip. With Reroute they were in free fall and I don't think they've hit bottom yet. Last time I saw them was sometime after Reroute and it was atrocious. Perhaps they are in a better place as humans but the music isn't there...
@paulbrzhustovsky72942 жыл бұрын
Oh shit, this is truly unbelievable! I put on old in flames after having seen this reaction and I take my words back - literally days ago they've rediscovered their original sound!
