Most underrated cover ever. Even In flames said the perfect version of this song exist already(johnny cash). The two aren't to be compared. Johnny has the emotion of a old dying man is his, that is just heartbreakingly beautiful. While with In Flames version you can hear the pain and frustration of broken man in his screams. His screams capture what it's like living with depression and anxiety. Both are beautiful, both show their own pain, and both have a place in the world.

But Johnny Cash's has true emotion after the regret of what he did to Vivian Liberto and their four children and his love for his second wife who had just died before he recorded his version. IF's version is surely a paean to Johnny Cash..the only true version

In Flames did this song far better than NIN or Cash. They did what neither of them could. They put both pain and rage into the song. I feel like that makes the song so much better than NIN or Cash

Nope, and I like In Flames. Anders is off on the phrasing, but he's sincere. Cash can't be beaten. Anders went a little too heavy. He should have been just a tad heavier than Trent. The music is beautiful.

Dirk Friedrichsen Johnnys was also a cover. Its a Nine inch Nails song. But when Cash made his version the singer from NIN said it became Johnnys.

I thought there was nobody who could ruin this amazing song... then again In Flames proved me wrong. This band is full of surprises these days. NIN's version is about addiction and a way of coping with it, Cash's was about the death he awaited and living as an old man in a new world. In Flames' version is probably about "Hurt"-ing their remaining fanbase.

Versions of this song ranked in order of best to worst (imo) by the artists that I have heard perform it: Johnny Cash NIN 2CELLOS Leo Moracchioli Sevendust Hundredth Youn Sun Nah In Flames Gregorian Leona Lewis Anomalie So obviously Johnny and Trent are in a league of their own, 2CELLOS's version was pretty exceptional and Leo's is the best cover of NIN's version. Sevendust down is where it starts to get a bit iffy. I like Sevendust's version, but doesn't match up to the Top 4 and trails by a significant margin and Hundredth and Youn's versions are just okay. Youn I give more credit to her vocal range but not sure it's right for the song, still talented. In Flames I would say was a mediocre cover at best.
