I disagree. Family-sized homes are far more in demand. Precisely because developers keep minimising space (by squashing in as many apartments as possible, made with low cost materials, into an area to maximise their profits). If they also had not been permitted to have kept purchasing family-sized homes, over the past few decades, and awarded planning permission to turn them into bedsits and single dwellings, often outbidding families during the buying process and vastly inflating property values in localities as a result, then this would not have become such a terrible problem. This was occurring long before immense levels of mass migration, which has significantly frustrated the issue further. Of course, local boroughs would permit this because they get to squeeze more money from each new property created via council tax. It also relieves them of reinvesting in building new housing stock as they rely on private developers to do that instead - often granting them permissions if they agree to make a percentage of the properties affordable and/or leased to social housing. I do not think the housing needs of single people and couples are a priority over families who are now being forced to live in grossly overcrowded properties because larger properties are unavailable (few and far between) and grossly overpriced. Single people can house share. Do every single one of them really need an entire apartment to themselves; each taking up vastly more space, for each separate single dwelling, than a family of the same number in a single house would occupy?). Families with young children cannot house share due to safeguarding issues. The vast majority of development that I am witnessing in my locality are for one and two bed, tiny, apartments. Not family-sized. I am still seeing homes, especially when an elderly member dies, being swiftly sold (on my street alone) to developers who are quickly renovating them in similar manners. Which is also cramping our road with more people and also their vehicles. This is a major problem. Every year, we are losing more family-sized homes via that route and they are not being replenished. Meanwhile there are growing numbers of families who cannot live anywhere suitable. We need more family-sized homes built, as a healthy supply will ease demand and reduce overtly inflated values. We also need a complete freeze on planning permission being granted to developers which allow them to section up what little else is left of such properties just so they can maximise profits. That should be the least we can do during a serious housing crisis.
