Don't forget that thanks to half-life source we got masterpieces like Freeman's mind and hlvrai. It was also utilized by many modders. While it was a buggy mess hated by everyone it played a larger role in the community than we might like to admit

currently there's a project I'm involved with called Fortress Connected, and through Half Life: Source existing, we're able to play through the HL1 campaign in multiplayer with the TF2 cast (and some other goofy characters). One of our mappers is actually going through and fixing up the entire campaign to make it a really pleasant experience. If not for HL:S existing this wouldn't be possible at all.

HL: Source was ravaged by engine updates and lack of maintenance, it was left out in the rain for years, so to speak, but it still had an important spot in the history of Half-life, considering it spawned various video series and significant stuff in pop culture, as well as channels like yours, and also Black Mesa (most notably). I remember playing this game back when it _really was_ playable, it was quirky sometimes, in ways that the original wasn't, but it was enjoyable, I am saddened that this is its ultimate fate, I wish it got fixed officially. I haven't tried to play the game with any of the myriad of fixes that are out there, maybe I should do so sometime this year.

actually, in Gmod, you can use HL:DMS for the Half-Life textures HL:DMS is secretly included in The Orange Box, so you don't even need HL:S if you bought it

You know about the screen glitch in the original Half-Life? I couldn't play because of that, so I always played with Half-Life: Source instead. I have 28 hours in that goddamn mess. I think I moved over to Gmod when I got to buy it and try fixing it for a long time until there was a mod which would remove level transitions and also fixed everything.

I remember how back around 2006 or 2007 I once used to host a HL1 Deathmatch Source server and run the HL1 Source campaign maps, it was quite fun. Of course obviously I was very young at the time. One interesting aspect of HL1 source was that you can spawn entities and props with it. I ended up literally making a space station in xen with the HL2 blast door models. It was when you did strange outside of the box things that HL1 Source became fun. There were immense numbers of strange custom maps I later found out about, varying from co-op PVE maps to puzzle maps and other things that came out that further used the source engine's physics to it's benefit. Of course, once Gmod fully came on scene most of this slowly dwindled away. Even though I'm not a day over 25 I still miss the old days of the internet before everything began to slowly decline in the 2010s.

I remember when I played this in like 2005 I got all the way to the dam section not understanding what the point or purpose of this version of the game was. I kept expecting some new area to pop up or something but it was just improved ragdoll physics. It’s very obvious now this was basically just an internal mod project that got released to demonstrate the mod tools and an example of potential workflows, but at the time everyone was very confused lol.

The only memory I have of HL:S is when CS:S released, me and a group of friends were blown away from the massive jump, as we played 1.6 almost religiously. One guy told us "Half Life is in the Source engine!" and I really thought it would be like CS, a massive overhaul. But like you, looking at the screenshots made us realize it was not worth it.

I remember seeing HL:Source when my uncle played it, when I was... 6 or so? It looked amazing n was really cool to see the new updated visuals. Fast forward about 10 years, I went to play HL:S Beta for kicks of it, which was atrocious... 49 crashes, mainly cuz Gordon Freeman is allergic to water (game crashes if you touch water). Which led me to play the retail (day 1) version, and... Holy GOD... It was HORRENDOUS visually. Gameplay, i, didn't notice much, but visually it felt like I was in a spongebob episode. EVERYTHING IS CHROME! But I felt like it was still... Okay. It wasn't, bad, nor... awful. IT was just, not fully polished. Thanks for bringing some memories back, RadHaz.

The ragdoll physics alone made half life source worth every penny. Seeing those blocky low poly models flop around never gets old. Same with half life deathmatch source…if it had players

I calculate that certain products like a videogame or movie can achieve great success if we keep it in the oven for a couple more minutes. We have seen how the early versions of the original Half Life looked like so, at a certain point it was still not ready to be released, and if they had more extra time to work on the final version, probably they would have expanded on the Xen part a little more.

I remember how back in the day, ragdoll physics were awesome. Plenty of shitty games became popular simply because they had it. So yeah I remember I didn't really care about the bugs, since the ragdolls more than made up for it at the time. Sounds kinda weird to say now, but seeing the enemies flop around, fall from ledges, be flung away by explosions was almost a game in and of itself.

HL:S is an accessible way to play Half Life with Garry's Mod addons. You could play through Half Life with the Nyan gun, as a tiny little gnome man, and possibly even play the forbidden "Half Life & Knuckles".

Technically you can still buy it if you get Deathmatch Source since you get both in the same purchase. You can also get it with the Half-Life Complete bundle.

Delisting doesn't make the game unavailable. It can be found and bought by searching it through Google. So we still have HL:S, it's not something you're going to stumble upon, which is good.

Half-Life: Source is my favorite way of playing HL1, and I am not saying that as a joke. Yes, bugs and all. It just feels so different because of the new engine. The reflective surfaces, especially the water, are amazing. It even has actual skyboxes, making the world feel much larger. And the ragdolls are a clear improvement over the jittery animations of the original. And it even makes a few other subtle changes. This part here at 1:30 is what I mean. Not only can you now walk through Headcrab corpses (which you never could before, making the vents even more of a slog to navigate), but you can whack them out of the air! I know that it's unstable, but it kind of adds a certain bit of charm to it. HL1 was already not as polished as it should have been, so these things don't even bother me too much. I mean, the boxes in the original? How they LAUNCHED ACROSS THE ROOM? Or even just the ladders or the AI of the scientists? Everyone just accepted these things and now jokes about them. I dunno, when I play a remake or remaster of a game, I prefer it to not be a 100% straight port, but add something unique. While this one IS a direct port, the few new features, good and bad, kinda make it stand out to me.

Boxes don't launch across the room in the original. That's a bug Valve introduced at some point long after the transition to steam and only finally fixed in the 25th anniversary update.

Sorta sad to see it gone. Half-Life: Source was my introduction to the series, and since I had no context for what the original played like, I found it a total blast. Played through the whole thing in two or three sessions. I still have fond memories of somehow trapping myself in a marine surrounded dead-end hole with five health and three grenades to my name, and spending at least an hour trial-and-erroring my way out of there.

It isn't. Valve updated every skybox to be in 3D, save for the few where you wouldn't even be able to really see anything in the first place (like the one during the intro).

0:33 this rings so true. I'd just seen the interview with Wolpaw where he talks about wanting to make P3 and I couldn't cobtain my excitement. The mere IDEA of a third Portal game got me hyped. Getting bored of waiting I got interested in Half-Life (it was about time) and asked my dad to buy it He bought Source. Didn't see anything wrong at first, was having fun! But hot damn the controls were tortured and I hated platforming sections. Whatever. It's an old game anyway. Then I get softlocked thanks to a glitch. I didn't know how to use cheats (I didn't even know they existed). I had no previous saves and decided to start the game from scratch again. It was fun anyway. ...then I got softlocked by a bug. Again. Okay. Third time's the charm! I got stuck in the wall during an autosave. Lol. Then on my fourth attempt I get about midway through the game and another glitch makes it impossible for me to progress. I ragequit and wait until I can get the actual Half-Life. A while later I'm posting fan art on the Portal subreddit (I am no longer a Redditor fuck that site man) and HOLY MOTHER OF BRICKS EVERY VALVE GAME EXCEPT HLA IN A GIANT PACK FOR A GIANT DISCOUNT Dad immediately rushed to spam "add to cart" HL has been my favourite game series ever since (Valve games havr thoroughly rotted my brain) (This is a cry for help) (Thanks for reading :3)

id always have a soft spot for Source because it was my first half life game. at that point it wasnt as buggy as it was today but it would occasionally crash. but i didnt know why and just assumed "oh its because its old". it wasnt until years later that i found out that I shouldve been playing HL1 instead of Source. oh well.

I played HLS a year prior to the 2013 update and while I did indeed run into some issues, I still thought overall it was not a bad version of the game. Post 2013 update, yeah the new bugs were bad enough to make me not want to touch it anymore so I’ve stuck solely to the 1998 version ever since. I should give Fixed a try one day to see if it manages to properly recreate what HLS was like when I first played it back in 2012.

It only got as buggy as it is because Valve never maintained it. The thing is, it has several features that HL1 still lacks, like subtitles, higher framerates and improved sound design. When I first played it, the only bug that appeared was the graphical glitch in Residue Processing.
