Well, there difference with "Muppet" and "Puppet". But if you really want answer... It's because Ernie and Bert always were friends. They don't have a certain age. Some puppets are adults, others are children, and some do not have a certain age at all. I think the creators wanted to say that Ernie and Bert just have nothing to do with sexuality. It's hard to say, but it's like with some characters. Like Winnie The Pooh. You just don't think about these things when you think about the characters. Bert and Ernie were always like brothers. But for some reason, people began to ship them. And I don't know why. Why not ship Oscar with Grundgetta if you really want to? Sesame Street also features adult puppets with a family. They just don't focus on sexuality, you know. It's more about relationships with friends and family. That is why they give this answer, although it is not accurate. It's more like, " We just came up with a comic duet, why do people ship them?". It's like Fellini said clowns are sexless. Laurel and hardy sleep in the same bed (when they have problems with the apartment), and it's innocent. That's what Fellini said. Not an exact quote. "Muppet Show" is more for adults, and therefore its characters are adults, and naturally the topic of complex romantic relationships is touched upon. Miss piggy and Kermit are a comic couple. The kind that often argue and break up, but still inseparable in a sense. Did this answer satisfy you?

As a kid, I thought they were great together but now looking back as an adult, I would say it was a rather abusive relationship with most of that coming from Miss Piggy's side directed at Kermit or anyone else in her way. For those who believe they were actually meant to be together, really look at their time together and you'll see exactly what I mean. It's no wonder Kermit would get upset with her. Kermit should cherish his freedom and stay as far away from the type of woman Piggy is as possible from a relationship perspective and for his own sanity. She is bipolar like crazy!
