Cars were less safe and drivers were generally "more reckless". Although seat belts were invented well before 1960, they were an optional extra at the time, and not many people used them in the 1960s.

@lisablack2389@Smoldering-tensions-745 seatbelts became required in cars in mid 60s and required to wear by early 1970s. Main reason for accidents -drunk driving. It wasn't penalized like today. It was almost treated like a "joke".It wasn't til the 70s and MADD mother's against drunk driving formed was pressure put on society and gov't to do more.
