Perry Como may have been a clean-living, straight-laced crooner, but it doesn't mean his life was always as peaceful as his music. Despite a marriage that lasted until death did them part, and a career that earned his family riches that would extend wealth down multiple generations, Como experienced some tragedies in life that would break a more fragile person. From the loss of someone close to him, to career setbacks that could have ended his career, Como managed to stay the course and keep singing until the very end. From a career that began before the second World War, to a life that ended in the new millennium, here are tragic details about Perry Como.

If I HAVE to choose only one, I guess “Magic Moments”… but I equally love most of his songs, another that comes to mind as being my most favorite apart from that one would be “Catch a falling star”

When I was 4 years old I loved Perry Como. When his TV show came on, during th 50s, I had to watch it. Apparently most of the little girls in my neighborhood always had to see Perry Como. My favourite song was "Catch a Falling Star", but later "Seattle" became a close second. I don't know what his appeal to little girls was, but he was handsome and could sing to us.

You can’t be with them every minute. Doesn’t mean they didn’t love him. My dad did not die alone, but he had 8 kids, 7 surviving at that time, and someone was always with him….for a couple of months. I was able to go back home and spend two weeks with my dad, but I had to go back to work. One of my brothers had to go back to work, my little sister also lived out of state, and she had to go back to work. It’s easy to say his family dropped the ball for him, but not really fair. Not everyone has six or seven siblings to share the load. We visited my dad each day, I drove my mother there. Someone was there at all times. My brother Tim and his wife stayed every night with Dad.

Perry Como was one of the biggest stars of his era. I feel he was just as good as a Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett or Bing Crosby or all of the rest of those crooners. But I am sad to learn here that he slammed his novelty hit parade songs. That sounds sort of 'snobish' to me.

He did so many great records... My favorites by him (this week) would be "Far Away Place", "Wanted" and "Round and Round." I agree about him trashing his novelty hits; basically he's saying "I sang some garbage, you bought it, and I cashed the check." Still... one of the best of the '40s / '50s singers along with Nat King Cole and the great (but largely forgotten) Vaughn Monroe.

He was pushed to record those songs that he didn’t like, and no singer wants to be pushed to sing something they didn’t want to sing. That is not snobbish, it is human, and you wouldn’t want to be forced to sing something you didn’t like either. He was better than Frank or Tony, and just as good as Bing.

Actually, my most associated song sung by Perry Como is "Catch a Falling Star. As I even do tell on The Catch a Falling Star site itself. But please do check it out for yourself.

There is nothing tragic about him.He was successful both personal and professional. I don't know why some are always holding his greatest successful songs against him. He didn't sing for critics but gor people and they obviously liked what they heard.Shall we be blamed too?I like nearly every song ,his novelty songs and the ballads. He could sing everything and that much better than others .🥰

He died on my 16th birthday. I remember his daughter saying they didn't have a relationship because he was an asshole, also the reason why he couldn't find work and lost all his friends. He was found dead in his chair DAYS after he died because no one visited him.

I don’t remember ANY of that. I don’t believe that to be true. I think if it was, she wouldn’t have fought to have his wishes honored the way he had left them in writing. Everyone who knew him, said he was a good man, and if what you say is true, there would’ve at least been some to dispute the compliments he received by all. By the way, when he died, his daughter was interviewed. She said she’d spent a nice couple of hours with him & her son, just the day prior. She described it as “wonderful”. -that doesn’t sound like the words of someone who had no relationship with him, and called him an asshole. They clearly did visit him. He didn’t sit there for days, dead in his chair. He was literally found the very next day. Me thinks you have Perry Como confused with someone else.
