You have the age old problem my friend, making enough new bees to replace the over-wintered old bees that have to carry through til the hive and queen can recover til there's natural pollen and nectar to buildup with, you very well prove a major point, many northern beekeepers have strave-outs during this crucial time because they neglect to keep check on enormous amount of nutrition required to make it through this transition, your's is much longer because your bees need cleaning flights from being in the shed so long, but there's nothing natural coming that early still. Best luck ti you Ian, you do a great job.

Or I watch novice (8 yrs experience, Simple Living Alaska) Beeks that hav large hives with lots of honey, yet they all died from freezing. She doesn't care. It bugs me so much.

Ian, glad things are starting to turn and you are getting warmer weather. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, trials and resilience. You are definitely a great beekeeper, this is quite obvious by your willingness to share your journey. Stay excited, wishing you fantastic weather from here onwards.

You have been very good about showing some very bad weather situations ( flooding) and the realities of loses and weak hives. It’s very good for new beekeepers to see the realities of beekeeping. You have helped a lot of newbees ,including myself ,over the years with your videos.👍

Ian, I don't think you have to worry about people thinking you are not an awesome beekeeper. Come mid summer those hives will be bursting with bees. In the fall, you will be pulling 200 plus pounds of honey per hive. Most beekeepers are happy with 100. They would be ecstatic with 200 pounds. Thanks for posting. You have influenced me as a bee keeper (4-6 hives).

It’s like Monty Python and the Holy Grail… “Bring out your dead!” lol I feel the same way… colonies were good a few weeks ago but have dwindled because of shit weather. Although I saw little baskets of pollen just a couple days ago just starting to come in so it should be soon!

I’ve come to the conclusion that while patties certainly don’t hurt, and do provide some benefit, they aren’t the driving force behind broodrearing.

So would it be better to make honey from the he package bees, or to split them and make more hives. It would be great to hear all opinions I would make multiple swarm traps for every yard also.

So many questions…. Lol First off an honest beekeeper you are but I wouldn’t mind seeing one of your weaker colonies for comparison. As for the canola powder on hive floor do you think that has been there from inside winter shed, no chance for water in there. Wondering the remedy for sugar syrup instead of canola honey in fall as they prepare for winter! Thank you for the video as always!

Do you have an idea of how long the winter bees hang on as far as brood cycles emerging before they die off? Seems they must hang for a cycle or two or the population advance would be very difficult.

From about 3mins in: If they ran out of egg laying space, would it not be time for another box on top, maybe 5 built combs and 5 foundation frames to give the queen space to lay. I mean you have all the young bees coming and it could be a way to get ahead?

@@aCanadianBeekeepersBlog It was the fact that they had stopped utilising the pollen patties that made me ask.
@eem8039
@eem8039 Жыл бұрын
@@FlakeyPM Maybe there is some polen outside and made the bees stop going for patties It is my case here with an early wide variety of fruit trees blooming in a continuous succession and this renders patties almost useless. Only the strongest of the colonies are consuming te patties and I suspect they are attracted by the sugar content only

I find that mini-marshmallows work well. Very few animals like them except skunks and raccoons. Otherwise I always catch cats. Most birds will not eat them either. Rain screws them up so rebait.
