Goooooo Evening Kevin , Sarah , & Girls , How nice to see the whole family at work in the garden . The garden looks pretty barren right now but it won't be long before it's lushly green. Squash is one of my favorite home grown vegetables. I'm sort of burned out on the summer zuccini squash. But I like the yellow crookneck and the straight neck also. Especially when fried. For a winter type squash , butternut is good. You might try the banana squash. Just one squash will provide enough for a couple of meals plus enough left over for canning. That is because one squash can weigh as much as 20 pounds. For the best tasting winter squash , I don't think you can go wrong with the Lakota squash. They are beautiful and even those who claim to not like squash have liked it when served to them. It's my favorite squash of all . However , Burpee may be the only easy source of seeds for them.

I have scaled way down on my gardens as I get older. Everything gets so much harder. But I still try to implement some of the things you guys do, just on a very small scale. I like to grow a little, can a little, freeze a little, dehydrate a little. I make my own pepper powders and enjoy them so much. Every little bit helps so that I don't rely entirely on the supermarket for food. I still feel a bit like a homesteader with my hands in the dirt, but I can't do what you guys do anymore. There is something super satisfying to get my hands dirty and then reap the benefits of the work. We only have a small garden so far and are already seeing tomatoes growing and squash is already flowering! We are also trying Japanese eggplant for the first time. We have jalapeno's, red & yellow bell peppers, okra (i'm the only one that likes okra in my house..LOL!), and Boston pickling cucumbers because who doesn't love a good home canned jar of dill pickles? We have chickens for our first time this year too so we have lots of herbs for us and the chickens. Things we've never grown like Chamomile and Lavender from seedlings, and then things that we love like Italian parsley, basil, and some others that we are going to start from seed. Oh yeah, we are also doing a red onion that we've never tried. I got my seeds from Baker's too for the first time! I'm really impressed by the quality of their products and may even buy more. I can't wait to cook with all that we have planted. Thank you for sharing what you are planting this season!

Right behind you. Thanks so much for your instructional videos. Today, the ground cloth went down....not much fun in the wind! Started early with no wind, but by the time done with the second garden, things got interesting. Putting in (2) 30 X 60 gardens. Unlike you, we don't get much if any rain. So tonight will run sprinklers all night to get the garden to settle down, soil is very fluffy right now. I didn't want to water before the ground cloth was down, otherwise I'd be up to my armpits in weeds. Planning on putting in the drip irrigation lines and trellis' on Tuesday, hopefully start seeds and plants Wednesday. Can you give dry climate tips from what you learned in Phoenix. Great idea! And, maybe there could even be a "collection" of selected seeds called something like "Kevin's and Sarah's Choice" seeds. Then, people could just buy the "bundle" of seeds and have them all--or even select, a la carte, from the bundle. Oh yeah, then folks would need to know how to order from your selection of "starters" for transplants. Maybe that would require a road trip, though. Reckon? (Fun times for all!)

My Okra is maybe 10 to 12 inches tall, my beans (crowder peas and Bush beans) maybe a foot tall. Now I do have a few beans coming on them but not much. and watermelon maybe 6 inches tall. All the leaves on all the plants are tiny. I have put organic fertilizer and even add Epson salt for greening up the leaves. I even go out and give them prayer and a pep talk. LOL nothing is working. So I am enjoying watching y'all plant and I can't wait to see how beautiful y'alls garden grows. I know it is going to be beautiful. God Bless you and your family and stay safe and well.

I had done Blue Lake green beans last year...not happy with production amount, so this year I did 36 Contender seeds and wow, they are going gangbusters...we planted 45 Bantam Sweet Corn direct and they are about 4 ft tall now... Cherry Belle radishes are doing good and you can keep those going! OMG, my Texas 1015 ( two starter bunches gave us about 45 plants...they are done and are huge! like softball size huge! They are drying in the greenhouse...We have garlic that was growing here when we bought the place...I just harvested about 20 and they are drying - letting the rest scape/bloom and re-seed for us, couple of celery plants I did from store bought doing great, We planted 5 lick tubs with 4 varieties of potatoes ( red, purple, yukon gold and russet), some have bloomed and will be ready for harvest soon, hubby tilled up a plot for me and we added some composted hay/horse/cow manure that was piled and moved from last year...used it also in our raised beds along with our rabbit manure we store...I planted two types of pumpkin (squash pumpkin and whatever type of round pumpkin we bought from Walmart last year - dried the seeds) They are coming up nicely...also planted some Strawberry Watermelon - traded some seeds with our neighbor and it is coming up as well...we also are doing some "experiment" planting...100 glass gem corn is coming up and some bird house gourds (hoping to have some projects to sell this fall)...Our gardens are nothing as huge as you guys...but we are pleased with what we are getting and will be able to enjoy canned and flash frozen both...Anyone can plant seeds and grow some food...thanks always for teaching us "how to" on all things! God Bless!

I am just dumbfounded!! your last 2 planting videos telltale signs show you guys are planting in pure CLAY SOIL! Now I'm an avid Gardner and I know a few things or two :D, a half/handful of rabbit poop does not make a fertilizer!! Sarah on this video could hardly push her Trowel into the ground to plant those sweet potatoes roots. And even YOU! Kevin with that auger thingamajiggy all it does is pull up hard clay soil. You say you tilled the garden , yet you guys step all over it and when you plant it all looks so compacted. It seems to me that you guys make enough money to buy some compost and mix 6-10" on the surface to get some decent planting soil. Wut Gives? Ive been a subscriber to your channel, seen some questionable approaches , have kept quiet but this soil thing just dosent make sense... Even a industrialized Tomato like Jet Star deserves some love.. :(

I planted several Chicago pickle cucumbers to brine can. I planted direct to earth, and the vines are a good 4 ft high already (southern California) with so many flowers and baby cukes that are exciting me! My patio tomatoes are producing. I planted peppers, hot and sweet. Zucchini and Japanese eggplant. Our weather this coming week is going to shoot up to the 109°~~111°! I hope my plants survive.

That's the way to do it! All hands on deck to help with planting. Our last frost is in June - most plants are waiting to be planted. Glenn and Maureen

Hi Kevin and Sarah, We are Frank and Jackie from Tucson Arizona. We both were born in Missouri. Jackie my wife in St. Louis, and I myself in St. Joseph. Our dream is 10 plus acres in Conroe Texas. But we're doing everything we can to grow our veggies here in Tucson in raised beds. We have a hoop raised garden with roll covers that we got the idea from you. We've watched just about everyone of your videos and are completely inspired by the both of you. Good luck to you and your family, maybe some day, you can view our homestead channel from somewhere in Texas. We want to grow and raise our own food to. God Bless.

Great shirt, yet again, Kevin. ;) Do you fertilize and/or add rabbit poo or anything else mid-season? How does that work when you have the weed fabric down? I love your channel! Very inspiring! :) PS: Not bragging, but I just harvested my first two zucchini today! Time to celebrate with some zoodles tonight!

I love Opalka tomatoes. They are so fantastic and they get so much bigger than regular paste tomatoes.

We installed our woven weed fabric today, planting tomorrow! We are in Toronto, Canada, we have just expanded to a 20x20 garden space... enough to freeze for the 2 of us for most of the winter 😊 thanks for all the tips! PS: Abraham Lincoln also said that woven weed fabric is the best!

We got all of our Roma and Slicing tomatoes in today, as well as cucumbers, lemon cucumbers, and Jack 'o' Lantern pumpkins. Tomorrow we get our pinto beans and white bean seeds in the ground as well as a second round of turnips (for the leaves, my husband LOVES them).

The Canadian krookneck pumpkin loos interesting. I grow butternuts and golden nuggets here in AUS....... I wonder how they would go. Sorry what we differentiate between Pumpkin and squash is different to you guys. Squash here a soft skinned like zucchini, all with the smaller seeds.

You planted all that PLUS, you made it possible for us to join you! That is a lot of work! Thank you so much. I dream I can soon have my big garden, for now, I am doing lots and lots of potted veggies! Currently I have about 30 edible plants on my terrace. Love my fresh food. Blessings

That quote is commonly mistakenly attributed to Abe Lincoln. It was actually Benjamin Franklin who said that, though.

Hi, What I want is a link to buy that DRILL BIT you used to make those holes. I've been digging out my holes in my landscape fabric with a post hole digger and THAT drill bit looks like it would have made the work effortless!
