it’s time for another edition of our show revelations where featured artists share rare stories behind their greatest songs and albums. Insight you won’t find anywhere else. Today’s interview is with one of my favorites He was raised in Brooklyn New York as Eddie Mahoney and was on his way to following in his father and brother's footsteps to be a policeman for the NYPD but dropped out of the trainee program to chase his dream of becoming a rock star. He changed his name to Eddie Money! He moved to LA and started dating a rich sorority girl, whose parents didn’t approve of his rock and roll ways… He wanted to take her on a special trip to paradise but didn’t have the money so he wrote a song about it… It became the classic Two Tickets To Paradise. I’ll let him tell you how it all worked out, plus a story of how he was able to bring a legend out of retirement to sing on another huge record that would also become an 80s classic. It’s a great story straight from the hilarious jester of rock. I’ve always felt that Eddie Money was like the Thurman Munson of rock.
He killed it for over 40 years on the rock stage and he left it all out on that stage. His swagger and passion were apparent night after night. He passed away a few years back and has been sorely missed.
What follows is me getting the real story of Eddie Money the cop, and the story of his greatest hits Two Tickets to Paradise and Take Me Home Tonight. As I always say on this channel. I feel the songs are magic... They're time capsules that when played, take us back to life's sweetest memories. For me Eddie Money’s music takes me back to driving around my small town of black foot Idaho with my dad and every time I hear Eddie's music, I wanna go back and do it all over. Eddie Money passed away almost one month to the day after my dad, they were about the same age.
When I interviewed him it was pretty special, as I got to relay the memories of his music to Eddie, and how his music created the father and son bond. Actually, Eddie wrote a special note to my dad as I had him autograph the exact copy of the cassette my dad wore out so long ago and passed on to me… I remember a few months ago I was at the store with my boys and his song came on. After about 20 seconds I was bawling. I miss my dad every day… I’m so grateful I have this music to remember him.
