Hiked the Dusky in march 1988. Started at the West Arm on Lake Manapouri, in 3 days to Dusky -sound. On to Lake Hauroko by way of the Furkert-pass (for me, the hardest part of the track) to Lake Hauroko in 2 very long, hard days. From Lake Hauroko back to West Arm in 6 days. In total 12 days including 2 hutdays. The weather was not too bad, but still plenty of mud and water. Great adventure though, thanks for uploading, brings back a lot of memories !

The sandflys don't bite like a mosquito. They actually tear a hole in your skin then spit anti coagulant into the the small hole to keep the blood flowing,. This is what makes them so bloody irritating.

Just got off Dusky a few weeks ago. Your story had countless parallels (not just in the terrain) to ours. It is such a special place + loved the inconvenience quote at the end. Awesome job

Possibly of interest to you, that really high three wire bridge at about 11:00 of the video next to loch maree hut has since been cleaned up in a flood and no longer exists. You have to ford the river now, and if there's much rain the wait for river to be suitable can be a few days. Just another obstacle to add to the Dusky!

No way! Wow! That river is pretty deep (and cold), must be a really dry season in order to ford it! Did you see it in person? Do you have any materials to share? Thanks!

You guys are a bit soft! Technical ? !!! The bit from Loch Maree up to tops is hard. I can imagine going down would be hard.
