There was a seriously high standard set in cathedral-choral music singing in the 70s and 80s. In my opinion, England has some of the best church/abbey/cathedral choirs in the world. It is a part of English culture that often doesn't get the recognition it so rightfully deserves. I am very proud of this aspect of my country.

I suspect they still do a weekend with York & Ripon… that is well worth a trip if you like choral music!!

I bought this lp from the Durham Cathedral shop, or stall as it was, on a very snowy day in December 1980. With two friends we paid to climb the steps to one of the towers. One friend banged his head on a low stone lintel. I think he feels the pain to this day. Some real gems on this recording. I especially adore Come, Jesu Come and Thee will I love. Thankyou.

The Stegall piece was so much a favourite of mine that I had it sung at my wedding… I was too junior (and not good enough) to sing to the solo, but I remember the boy that sang it… one of the nicer ones… David Lloyd was a hoot, and I remember his Christmas parties with great fondness… not least bc we played “sardines” and he had 4 daughters 😂😂
