Simply known as “The Mansion,” the Romanek residence was previously owned by Rick Rubin and parts of it were used as a recording studio and bohemian artist refuge for many rock ‘n’ roll legends; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses, Jay-Z, Lorde, Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, System of a Down and many others have all recorded what some would argue is their best work there.

I have often wondered about this place … B.R. Your style is simply sublime….!!! So much gorgeous , love the lil vases on the table by the fireplace….!! Growing up , I heard that the house was originally built by studio set builders for Wallace Simpson & her man ,as a honeymoon getaway … rumor was they didn’t like the canyon , & wound up staying at San Diego s hottest beach hotel….It sat empty until Mr.Flynn ? I know that a fire raged threw the canyon late 20’s? burning most of Tom Mix’s house , which later was rebuilt & Bob Dylan lived in , and across the street , Harry Houdini’s estate Then it was a abandoned again until Doris Day’s son Terry Melcher bought it and brought it back to life … Super Sixties omg everyone ….! Then it took a breath & R.R. Became its ppl…. ThankYou ThankYou ThankYou , for the peek , The house obviously Loves you , your Fam , & the art you have made it …!!! I forgot what the estate was called , but I’m sure it’s written in your heart …♥️♾♥️ ThankYou Again ! I ♥️LA

It's a little sad that it's not still an active recording studio but it's so refreshing that they have preserved so much of that history. Too often in LA historic homes are bulldozed in favor of boring charm-less boxes. This is absolutely stunning!

Eclectic would not be a word I would use to describe the interior of this house. If she had painted all the window frames black you could, at the very least, have amazing views to the outside of the house. And that stark white color is awful, and I feel bad saying this but it's just that every single house I see in LA and elsewhere has that exact same aesthetic.

You're almost right! The Foo Fighters' film is based on another haunted mansion in the Encino neighbourhood of LA. But coincidentally, Romanek's house is also said to be haunted 👻 The Red Hot Chili Peppers had many creepy things happen to them when they recorded their "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" album there.
