Twitch ads have gotten so bad I’ve had 8 30 second ads then 15 second later after sitting through those another 8 30 second ads

I can't wrap my head around how anyone watches Twitch. Maybe they minimize the tab and go do something else? I can't bother waiting, just close the tab

I watch KZbin almost exclusively on TV so I'm kind of used to ads. Now, websites are a whole different thing. Like Charles said, news websites are imposible to read without an ad blocker. It's insane. I'm surprised people haven't gone back to buying physical newspapers.

I spend most of my time on KZbin listening to it while I'm working and I'll sometimes get an ad before the video, 10 seconds in another ad, then 30 seconds later a 40 second ad break and since I'm working i can't always skip (I think it actually happened on this channel yesterday)

I pay for Premium because KZbin is my cable and I hate ads. I also want to support the folks I watch without having to join their specific patreon or something.

I can't stand watching Twitch because of ads. It's like 2 1/2 minutes every 15 minutes. If I see an ad in the first couple of minutes, I just skip the channel.

There is a definite balancing act to ads on Twitch when you are monetized. There's less direct control now, and more automation, which can be good and bad. If you want to avoid having pre-rolls, there is a minimum time-per-hour for running ads. From what I recall that's 3 minutes, which is why many people run between 3-5 minutes per hour, spread between 3-4 small sections, in order to meet percentages and to allow them to disable pre-rolls. The streamer selects these options for their stream. Yeah, it sucks to have to play that game: but if you're seeing 2 1/2 minutes of ads every 15 minutes, the streamer you're watching set that length and frequency in their stream settings. That is very much not the default.

I don't have a problem with ads being shown. What I don't like is that some KZbinrs have ads literally every minute! It should be no more often than one every five minutes. Dial-it back and keep your viewers and ad revenue. And yes, we know the channel owners have control...they are just greedy.

The irony that these videos came out today, and then when I am sitting there waiting for Transformers One to start and I am bombarded with 20 minutes of basic, old school style, television adds honestly had me thinking that the experience in the theater wasn't worth it.

The issue with ads on youtube is mainly how often they show up, how long they last compared to the video and when they show up. I've had ads show up in the middle of fucking sentences in videos I've watched in the past, or if you want to watch shorter videos, adding 30-60 seconds of ads to the activity of watching two or three 2-5 minute videos are kinda insane. Adblockers are probably also used by people for other websites (lots of sites that have articles nowadays have so many ads that the articles become borderline impossible to read) and just leave it on for everything.

My streamer friend made the choice to lean into the length of the ad breaks on Twitch, pause what she's doing (for the most part) during those, and has announcements for when they're coming. This way she only has these 3min ad breaks happen once every hour or so and doesn't have pre-rolls (I think). This opposed to having shorter ad breaks far more frequently.

So I have an extension that sometimes works sometimes doesn't... that mostly negates the ads on my side for a large portion of it... but doesn't outright skip the ad. I wonder how that interacts with the ads and youtuber ad revenue. Like it made a 15 second ad done in between 1 and 2 seconds. I think a 2 minute ad was under 30 seconds easy. It still plays the ad... but doesn't block them. Like how much needs to be active to be counted as 'viewing' the ad.

The Steve Ballmer 15 minute ads and the hour+ minutes ads on KZbin are annoying!. But the Twitch Pre Roll ads are good at slowing down the ads during the stream! Pre Roll ads are good for those that are showing up after the stream starts!

I get the sentiment but I am curious about the choice to push for add-blockers vs pointing people towards using Premium as a middle ground. I've not heard many people talk about premium viewership but those that have, have reported more benefit from their watchers that subscribe to premium than those that watch all the adds. Same goes for the new Twitch program that does the same thing. Small monthly fee and no-adds. Seems like getting more people on to a premium account is kind of a win win for everyone.

Interesting take. I hadn’t even really thought about it, but as small creator myself I always associated free products with ads. I understand KZbin’s perspective though, selling ads is how they make money as well, but I’m sure as one of the biggest sites around they are making more than enough.

What impact does YT premium have on your revenue? I have premium and do not see any ads. I have no issue with spending some money to support YT and creators while not watching ads but in truth do not know how it impacts creators.

few years back (3?4? who even knows anymore..) there was a LGBTQAI+ channel that had to demonetize the whole channel due to conversion therapy ads getting posted on their channel. I have made sure that i have run my ad block ever since then. I was one of the people who was part of the test runs for the new anti-ad block policy back at the start of the year. i tinkered with ublock and would get it working, then it would block me again, repeat, repeat. I ended up getting the Brave browser which has adblocking built into the browser itself and it didnt have anymore issues with getting banned. though a couple months ago my best friend added me to her family account, which has premium, so I am not sure if it is still viable or if they have found a way around Brave, or just blocked the browser itself. If i had not found a way to get around the ads i would have just quit watching youtube videos. i was that dead set about not giving them my money after they pretty much threatened pay or you are banned. Plus the original issue just left a bad taste in my mouth. the fact that you cant control what ads are shown on your channel and you could have hate messages targeting your audience, screw them.

That's odd. Saying that small creators want fans to use Ad blockers is weird. It's possibly a act of being dishonest by simply saying something that would be popular with people inorder to not look like a greedy A-hole. My position on ads is i don't care if people do or don't watch ads.

@sqoo5 It's a watcher choice. It's odd for content creators to make a video telling people to use Ad blocker or don't use ad blockers. Ether of those two things is just a content creator trying to manipulate the watchers.

@@tabletopgamingwithwolfphototec One of the main reasons someone might not use adblock is concern for the creator. A creator saying "nah don't worry about the effect on me, it's not worth it tbh" isn't manipulation, it's just addressing the concern that people have about the creator

I despise ads I hate them do the fact that I've been slammed with them and to the point that they become way too intrusive into my personal life. Not only that I would get ads not even a minute into a video after seeing unskippable ads in the beginning it is horrendous I use ad blockers because I despise the fucking garbage that comes out from these ads sadly I can't use an ad blocker on my Xbox. I do understand where you're coming from but I despise it I'm trying to watch a video or even listen to music and it's just constant garbage being thrown my way.
