In search of local Brown Trout - BFS Fishing

Today we go lure fishing for Brown Trout in a local river in South Western Victoria, Australia using BFS baitcasting tackle. On this channel we generally use ultralight or BFS tackle so that we can enjoy fighting the fish. Almost always I will release the fish to hopefully be caught another day.

​@@F11sh-f2h yes we have migratory and some pitiful stocking, it's very very hard, I'm a pretty good (by numbers) chub fisherman and if you don't put on the hours or you are incredible lucky, you'll have a hard time catching one, BUT it's always nice for the hike and awesome locations.

Ive eaten trout but I just don't think I could kill one these days. I'd prefer to have a chance to catch it again over eating it. But I wouldn't knock back some smoked trout either.

Watching from NZ Jacob. Just got back from a trip to the canals (a fair number of Aussie anglers go specifically to the canals for fishing). A good point about spending all the time and energy actually getting a fish in the end. I also agree that a kayak would be super useful to target some of the less accessible spots. At least here in NZ targeting brown trout in stillwater (that slow river looks very stillwater to me) you have to put in the time to target likely brown trout lies and this includes undercut banks, logs and drop offs. It would be good to see a video for how you go there in your kayak. As to brown trout don't be shy to try on some smaller hard bodies or lures as well. Brown trout can be a really challenging fish to catch on certain days and mixing your offering up with smaller soft baits like what strike tiger does can be a way to continually get success with them. Yesterday though I had to revert to the fly though given how still and hot the weather was.

Great advice, I really appreciate it mate. When I put the kayak in I will launch where another fast flowing creek meets this river otherwise there is not a lot of flow as you mentioned. I will try to get the kayak to this "pool" and beyond and see how it goes. I have a fair few smaller sinking jerk baits and some other 38mm cranks I will try.

Yea I have seen fish splash 4 times now and all very close to that bush the is pretty much the only thing covering the water.
