Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #801
Date of adventure: 5/29/24
The fascinating story of Nellie Bly Baker, a Hollywood actress who moved to a self-built cabin at an abandoned mining camp in Lundy Canyon. Nellie also built the famous "Upside Down House" in Lee Vining -- which is also home to the legendary Tioga Pas Mobil gas station's "Whoa Nellie Deli." Coincidence?? Let's find out!

OMG I just realized my dumb ass messed up and somehow omitted my voiceover audio from 18:44-19:21 😆It was supposed so say something like, "OK, I know that sounds like an exaggeration, but it's TRUE! I wore my old Mobil hat all over the place for years, until it got funky, and I tried going back to the Lee Vining gas station many times to buy a new one, but they never had it in my color. I bought other colors, but they never really looked right on me, so eventually I gave up and had my own knockoff version made." Can't believe I screwed up like this...UGH!! How embarrassing😜

I was offered a job working for a utility district that was located near the crest of the Sierras nearly 20 years ago. The job was operating and maintaining the hydroelectric dam intakes for the district at the top of the mountains. The job came with a two story cabin. The cabin was two stories because of the incredible snowfall amounts that hit the place every year. During the winter, only way to access the cabin was by snow track or snowmobile. Your vehicle would be parked 20 miles downhill at a maintenance yard because the access road would be closed for most of the winter season. The job was so remote that you were only guaranteed supply runs once a month in the winter. I was offered the job but had to decline. The same week I got the offer, my mother was diagnosed with an inoperable tumor and had just a short time to live. I chose to stay close to my parents and support them instead of moving 800 miles away from home. My dream job appeared at the worst period of my life. Oh well. I made the best choice possible for me and my family. Maybe someday I’ll get back there and see the cabin again!

I'm glad to see you finally bring this one to the YT silver screen. I too contacted The Hussy several months ago about Nellie Bly, her cabin and her Upside-down house. But I guess Cindy 'sort of' beat me to the punch and invited WH up for a visit. I thought it would make for a good episode to tell Nellie's story the way ONLY The Hussy could tell it. Another fascinating corner of your amazing country. Too easy to overlook these nooks and crannies if you only fly over them or hurtle past on the interstate network. That you take time to explore them, that you treat the people there with interest and respect, that you restore these lost and forgotten histories is why we all follow you. The Japanese have a nice term, living national treasure, which certainly applies to you. Different skill sets, but it’s clear why you can relate to Nellie Bly Baker. ❤❤👍😊

@@jimForgottenHinterland National Geographic is an entertainment magazine. Hardly any kind of authority on language. You can look up the names of the peaks within the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. You’ll notice they aren’t associated with the word ‘Sierra’ at all. So, my question is, when you are referring to multiple ‘Sierras” what are you talking about? Are you suddenly speaking Spanish? You are referring to the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, correct? Please walk me through how you get ‘sierras’ out that? I’m interested in peoples thought processes.

The story of Nellie Bly Baker and the reminder of that fantastic gourmet restaurant in the Mobil station where I once dined makes me want to make a second trip over there. I have heard about people who are just able to roll into any room and be warmly welcomed, and there is a guy called bald And Bankrupt who travels through India and the former Soviet nations who has a similar personality. But you young lady, have the charisma level of not only one Nellie Bly but ten. I am sure Nellie was a real trailblazer for independent, do it yourself women, and she would have been a you tube sensation, but for a person who started life as an introvert, you have come a long way. And if you ever doubt that what you are doing is worth any value, you should rermember people like Denise, all those people who came to your firehouse fundraiser and took photos with you and also those friends who value you as a person and your work and talents. You may eventually run out of mining cabins and ghost towns to explore but you should be proud of your work and the appreciation of your devoted Hussyites!

It's a very remote location. It's not that high everywhere in Calif. All across New Mexico, Arizona, and into California there are long stretches where the gas on the interstate is extremely expensive and long distances between stations. Get onto remote state highways and it's even higher and further between.
@EarlyRiser--
@EarlyRiser-- 3 ай бұрын
One reason that gas is so high is due to transportation. State highways only go so far and then truckers must climb the mountains and valleys to get to the Eastern Sierra in gas guzzling tanker trucks. Forty years ago gas was high in all rural terrains, so you planned it into your budget and into the price of witnessing one of the most gorgeous high mountain terrains with its forests, mountains, lakes and deserts. Don't blame California, blame the petroleum companies and everyone who wants a piece of the profits. The last group you want to tick off are the truckers. Yes we have high taxes but this is a large state with a massive infrastructure.

As always, I love the video. You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge of the off-the-path things that are part of the "middle of nowhere" history of the old west. Btw, I just about died when I saw the price of gas - $6.59 per gallon. Maybe it isn't too bad living in the Midwest where it's just under $4.00.
