Cut a few windows in the sides and cover them with screen door material, cut a hole in the lid to fit the fan, then add a few gallons of water with dish soap to the bottom of the bin. I use a bottle with brown sugar, water, and yeast as bait, as well as something called Lurex. You can get a nine week supply of that for around $21 on amazon. Tip for the vinegar trap: Mix the vinegar with something sweet with carbon dioxide like 7up or sprite and a bit of soap to break the surface tension and in stead of an regular glass use one concave like a brandy glass. Put some dishwasher soap on the walls so that the fruit flies can't get hold.

In my own experience, I found red wine a bit more effective than vinegar. Additionally, you can also add sugar and yeast to have the fermentation process. Fermentation produces CO2 and makes it even more effective. My solution was pour some wine (or vinegar etc.) in a container, cover it with saran wrap, make some holes, add a couple drops of dish soap (to reduce the water surface tension and drown the flies).

@-danR5 жыл бұрын
@@Blacktop_Rabinowitz soap may drown flies _faster_ , but none will escape anyway. the acidic vinegar will neutralize the soap so the value of it won't last long. There is a few mm's layer above the surface of acetic acid vapor molecules and of CO2 which partly stun and slow down the insects in seconds, not to mention the acid they are now bathed in; it's dilute but brutal. They have no defense against this because although fermentation occurs in nature, there's no such phenomenon naturally occuring as pools of dilute acetic acid, just rotten fruit and the like.

Watered down old/leftover red wine with a single drop of dish soap works wonders. I used apple cider vinegar for years but nothing works as well as red wine. - Can be substantially improved by placing your red wine glass/cup under a nightlight on your kitchen counter. - They even prefer the wine over old bananas.
@jeremyrainman5 жыл бұрын
Shawn, if you ever do a flea trap test.. here's one for you. 1) Get a large casserole pan, or large cake pan, anything shallow and wide. 2) Get a candle, longer burning the better, the taller the better, the skinnier the better. (It is safer if the candle is not taller than the dish is wide) 3) melt the candle upright to the pan so that it won't tip over. 4) set the pan out before going to bed, preferably in the center of the room. 5) Dump soapy water into the pan. It must be soapy and you want to completely cover the bottom of the pan, but it doesn't have to be any fuller than that. 6) light the candle 7) Go to bed, check the pan in the morning. A few weeks of this treatment in every room of your house, and you can completely rid a house of fleas.

I purchased a packet of four 2-cup plastic bowls with lids from Walmart. I drilled holes in the center of each lid and inserted a small plastic funnel, then put a quarter cup of cider vinegar in each bowl and put on the top. I put two in the kitchen, one in the bathroom, and one in the bedroom. Within three days there were no more fruit flies in the house. Each trap was full of drowned fruit flies - more than 20-30 in each trap. The funnel is a key ingredient because once they fly in to the smell of the cider they cannot get out again and eventually must fall in and drown.

I make my own. I use a clear plastic drink cup with a lid and shove a paper funnel into the straw hole. I fill the cup with a fruit (not grape) wine to within about 2 inches from the funnel tip. Put a couple drops of dish soap in to break surface tension and it's good to go. They work GREAT. I think I'll try the apple cider vinegar this year. Seemed to work good too. Thanks for the great video Shawn!

I did a modified version of the apple cider vinegar trap recently. My grocery store didn't have any apple cider vinegar in stock, so I used balsamic vinegar as a substitute. Added about 1 oz of Vodka, covered the top with plastic wrap (elastic band to hold it still to the container) and cut four-five small holes in the top -- just large enough for the flies to fit through, but small enough for them to not very easily find a way back out just in case. It took a couple of refills, but I managed to get rid of a pretty bad fruit fly infestation that way. NOTE: A drop of dish soap also works for this trap (I'm told it's to break the surface tension of the liquid so that they sink like what's said in the video), but I didn't have any unscented dish soap. Anything with scents apparently messes with the smell of vinegar too much, so vodka was the easier alternative for me.

@@IseenowAtl I had them in my house after using a window A/C last summer. The pest guys sprayed around the windows, and still I'd see them in/around the windows + bedroom + bathroom... After checking online, I tried a liberal amount of diatomaceous (sp?) earth around the sills and in the bathroom, where they also appeared to hang out. (Don't inhale this stuff.) After maybe 3 months, I think I was somewhere around 25-30 dead (coated in white) - and haven't seen any since. (I have no idea if they naturally would die in that time...) So, I can not prove or disprove... ...but it is super cheap and seems to have helped at least. I used 100% diatomaceous earth and a modified ketchup bottle for the duster. Other brands seem to have anti-caking agent and special dusters (don't inhale this stuff) - no idea if worth the extra money (but possibly).. Good luck...!

I worked in a fruit fly lab. What they like to eat is actually the yeast cultures on rotting fruit- not really the fruit itself. So you can use baker’s yeast as bait. Just mix it with some water to activate. I make disposable traps by making yeast paste in a baggie that is draped in a glass (like you are going to fill a pastry bag) then I tape a funnel that I make out of paper to the top (pointing down into the bag). They climb in through the hole in the funnel but are too dumb to get back out. Throw the whole bag away when the yeast starts to dry up. You could also add some yeast to your simple vinegar trap to turbocharge your bait.

For some reason, when I set out ACV traps, the fruit flies like to walk around &/or chill on the rim of my container. So, in order to get them, I too do the ACV, water, dish soap in a wide but shallow container, but I fill it to the brim. When it's close to the top, I set it in place, then start to dribble water into the container until it actually arches or makes a slight dome above the container (due to the cohesion of water molecule). That way, any flies that touch the edges of my container fall in. You just have to stop adding the water before the tension breaks & you get spillover.

I use vinegar with a bit of soap as well. But I also use a trap for it. I use a 2 liter bottle. cut off the top and flip it over and place it into the bottom to be a funnel trap.

We did something similar to this to keep our flies down. We put some apple cider vinegar in a mason jar and then put plastic wrap on top and poked holes in it. Worked like a charm!

The apple cider traps work the best, however you should cover the container with some plastic wrap with a small pencil size hole. This keeps the flies from just coming and going. They spend more time wandering around inside and more likely to come in contact with the vinegar and drown. We eliminated all flies in our house with these traps. You can make lots of them because they're cheap.

I feel like mine are drain gnats more than fruit flies, the sink and bathtub drain seem to be their biggest attraction. I usually use fly paper hanging in corners of the bathrooms, and a couple homemade traps from plastic bottles with a small hole in the top or cut in half with the top upside down to make a funnel. Then bait with vinegar, water and soap.

I have a trap that looks like wall plugin nightlight it has a blue light that shines out from the back that's "supposed" to attract the files and then catch them on a sticky plastic insert. It caught 3 flies over a month. There where at least 20 flies the kitchen every day. I still have it plugged in, it makes a good nightlight even if it sucks as a trap.
