The Welsh Guards have always had a very unique identity, a sort of 500 strong family, and I'm pretty sure it still has it to this day...... I like that. The Household Division has a unique identity anyway, not just because of their ceremonial duties, but I think the Welsh Guards have it to a greater extent, especially as they have the pretty fierce rivalries between North Walians and South Walians.

Very true. I'm Welsh by birth, but served in the Grenadiers, for my sins. I've known a couple of blokes who served in Corps attached to various Guards regiments. Both say the Welsh Guards was without doubt, the most close knit and true to their national identity of any of the battalions. And that includes the Micks who, by my experience, were so laid back they are practically horizontal. Bit of a regret that I didn't join the Taffs, but relatively happy with my lot. Whichever regiment you joined, you always felt part of a wider blue/red/blue family, and it was always good to bump into other lads you knew from other battalions on various courses.

@ 1:50 Crispin suggests that the RUC accommodation is much better than the what the Welsh Guards have.......well, that may be because after a few months, Crispin and his lads, can go back home again, and the RUC will have to live with the threat morning, noon and night....at work, at home and in bed.

Well said, sir, history will judge the incredible restraint, within the rule of law, that brought terrorists to the the negotiating table and into the elected government; let them sing their tiresome "rebel songs", it is a civic society now.

@@belfastchild2643 According to WikiP, he was a Lt. Col, whose last post was as Security Advisor to the Cabinet Office. He left the army in 2002 by which time he had over 21 years service. Since then he's been an independent Security Advisor, written a few books and appeared on TV on security matters. Wiki's last dates for him are 2010, so maybe he decided to retire early? Would love to know.

Not so sure about crispin but Captain Reese has ended up in Brussels doing some Eurocrat malarkey with British-Kenyan trade, doesn’t sound awfully like a vocational job to me but then he was in the army for less than 6 years...

So Crispin, an Englishman, wants to fly the Welsh national a flag in an RUC Station in Northern Ireland and objects to an RUC Sergeant telling him not to do so, I would suggest that Crispin is a particularly arrogant man.

I bet any foreign corporation that sets up shop in Ireland would fly an Irish flag along with the flag of the company’s home country so what’s the fucking difference. Are Irishmen so insecured about who they are that a Welsh flag will tick them off. The fact that Crispin is an Englishman is utterly irrelevant.
