Amen Gabriel, this whole intro touches my soul!! I was born and raised in the US and I was blessed to live for five whole months in Puerto Rico, absolutely breathtaking and BEAUTIFUL!! Ironically, my middle son's name is Gabriel and I remind him and his two brothers about always respecting their names and apellidos!! They were born and raised in the US as well and I always tell them to never forget where they come from because til this day, their people in Puerto Rico and other islas are still struggling!! God bless Lin Manuel for creating this masterpiece because our children of today, especially those born in the US, need to know and learn their true origins and not, what has been brainwashed into their minds!! The fact that I grew up in an environment like this...everyone knew each other everyone got along and I remember the guy who owned the bodega he would always give me a lollipop when I would go there lol and my dad's friend who worked for MEGA which is a car service and he would pick me and my cousin up from middle school and drive us home ahhh the good days I really miss them and this movie just brought me back💜 Edit: my mom was dominican so she knew everyone lmaoo I would walk around with her buying stuff and then she would see someone she knew and I knew as a baby apparently so she would talk with them until I became tried and wanted to go home lmaooooo

Mom's are great for that! And love your story!! I'm getting ready to watch this on HBO Max, but what I've loved from everything I've seen so far is how REAL it is. There are actors of every shade and shape. They're not playing gangsters, thugs and crooks, they're playing down-to-earth hardworking individuals just fighting to make a life for themselves. I think I saw in an article somewhere that some people wanted Lin to 'spice the story up' by adding in the same kind of drama seen in every other sterotypical POC production (ie POC stories told by a white person) and he held firm to his vision. I'm so glad he did because America deserves to see the real faces and lives.

I had no idea John Chu got started with Step Up sequels, now it completely makes sense that he knows how to craft a musical with these huge dance sequences for the screen. It's such a hard thing to do and he absolutely nails the energy you need to capture. Well, it didn't perform well in the box office for several reasons other than the "colorism." As a latino myself, I've seen many skin tones in our culture, and a bit more often than not, they're light. Yes in Puerto Ricans. (Sorry to sound like a red-piller but, take anything from a social justice warrior-esque news outlet/blog with a grain of salt.) Also in the years of 2020-2021 (yeah, cop-out but true) in the era of which a "box office" is not really thriving in relevance because of the pandemic, I gotta ask, is the entertainment industry really doing anything to convert statistics on exclusive company streaming services like HBO MAX to to "box office" stats? Furthermore Musicals are more of a niche thing that most people wouldn't naturally gravitate towards, and I kinda understand why, the soundtrack for "Heathers the musical" mostly consisted of musical numbers that were really more so just lyrical exposition just for the sake of exposition which is a common problem that some, if not most musicals tend to have.
