This trip takes us along the Bavarian Maximiliansbahn, more precisely along the section between Augsburg and Munich Central Station. The journey on the ICE 701 takes us right through the state of Bavaria. At the same time, this section of the route is also part of the Magistrale for Europe, which is a rail infrastructure project that is of great importance for Europe. The official name of the EU project is TEN-V Project 17 and since 2013 it has been part of the so-called Rhine-Danube Corridor, which is intended to connect the cities of Paris, Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Bratislava!
Wikipedia excerpt on the route of the railway line along the route kilometerage:
The railway line leaves Munich station in a westerly direction on the Munich gravel plain, with several branches off from other railway lines. From Munich-Pasing, where the Würm is crossed, the four-track route (two tracks for S-Bahn, two tracks for long-distance and regional traffic) runs in a northwesterly direction.
The Gröbenbach water network is measured. Before Olching, the tracks of the freight train north ring join the line. A freight train track coming from the Munich North marshalling yard crosses the two tracks for long-distance and regional traffic on a flyover structure around one kilometer long. The high-speed tracks also begin at this point. In the direction of Augsburg, the left pair of tracks is used by the S-Bahn. To the right of this is a so-called NGV track for regional and freight traffic. Even further to the right is the so-called HGV pair of tracks for high-speed traffic. The second NGV track is on the far right, so that the HGV tracks are between the two NGV tracks. The switch connections in Olching can be used in the branching line at up to 130 km/h.
After Olching, the railway line crosses the Amper lowlands and swings in a westerly direction. After the town of Gernlinden, the right NGV track changes to the other side of the two HGV tracks under an overpass, so that now in the direction of Augsburg the two HGV tracks are on the far right, the NGV tracks in the middle and the S-Bahn tracks on the far left. The HGV tracks are equipped with regular train control.
Two tracks are available for the S-Bahn up to Maisach. From Maisach to Mammendorf the S-Bahn line continues on a single track. In Mammendorf the S-Bahn tracks end and the route leaves the Maisach lowlands.
After Mammendorf the four-track line (two tracks for regional and freight traffic, two tracks for long-distance traffic) runs in a northwesterly direction.
At Haspelmoor the line crosses the moor of the same name and crosses the subtle watershed to the Lech valley in shallow stream depressions. At Mering, the Ammersee Railway from Weilheim in Upper Bavaria (Ammersee) joins it and the Paar is crossed, then the railway line runs straight northwards parallel to the Lech in the valley on the right bank. At Augsburg-Hochzoll, the line turns left towards the west and the tracks of the Paartal Railway from Ingolstadt merge into the HGV tracks of the line. The Lech is crossed shortly before Augsburg station.
