The shortcut to redeem Nigeria is to create a truly independent and uncorrupt INEC where the Chairman is not appointed by anyone. Corruption in INEC has never allowed Nigerians vote to count. For 25 years of uninterrupted democracy Nigerians have never witnessed a free and fair election.

So the chairman would be appointed by extra planetary being? The pope would not conduct any election any much better than what we currently have. The people who sell thier votes, polling agent for parties, inec and security officers who are bought over, the people who vote along ethnic and religious line etc The change would largely come when the majority of Nigerians mindset shift and understand this country belongs to everyone. Are their lapses in the previous elections yes are there things that could be done to improve the process yes of course only if majority of Nigerians understand the rules and are willing to follow and defend it. Have elections improved in Nigeria definitely yes "there where times where results where announced when voting was still going on, ballot papers with no serial numbers etc" , are the changes slow? yes. but that is one drawback of democracy unlike dictatorship we have to keep at it and continuously work together to improve the system and our Mindsets. Now is the time to talk about lapses from the previous and ways to preventing same but we have to come to the realization that even with those changes if the average mindset does not improves the improvement would be slow.

Listen Nigerians, without holding those politicians, tugs, criminals who kills, confiscate, threatened voters and snatch ballot boxes, Nigeria will continue to dream about genuine democracy period. Accountability matters.

Professor Ikechukwu spoke my mind -- at this point, Nigerian electorate has to be held accountable for its parochial approach to politics and democracy. Voting on accounts of tribe, religion, and 'what did you bring for us' (stomach infrastructure) can no longer be excused on account of poverty. Nigerian people should be enlightened enough, at this stage, to not vote for convicted felons; to not vote for anyone who bribes them; to not vote against anyone based solely on ethnicity and religion. That Nigerians keep violating these norms of democracy -- which eventually usher into offices crooked, inept, and visionless persons -- is as retarding to Nigeria's growth (though to a lesser degree) as are kleptomania, avarice, nepotism, religious huckstering (like spending billions on hajj to Mecca), etc. of Nigeria's leaders. Granted that leaders of Nigeria, especially since 2011, have failed the people and the country colossally, it is time that the led were held accountable for their corrupt contribution to Nigeria's democracy since 1999.

The military has always done better than these crooks. The military built all the refineries that they couldn't maintain,All the major infrastructures in Nigeria were built by the military,From 1999 till today,The so called democracy didn't deem it fit to fix electricity problems, not even 1 refinery to avert energy crisis in the future, bad roads etc.

When a society axiom allowed everything and no average standard of what cannot be accepted, is where it brought us. Value is eroded and the even what was seen few years ago we need to improve we're now singing it as a golden age. We cannot keep only mesmerizing the past without ingenuity of imagination to chat a new path. CB Chun

This is my problem with Prof Adeniyi, always trying to massage the issues and downplay things. Our rulers are criminally paid and their access to our funds are unrestricted. With all the grandeur that comes wtih office, Their failure still screams to the high heavens because the eat up everything. So thank you Charles for pointing it out that we should be a bit more firm in calling their failures out.
