Good morning everyone, I had a wonderful time reconvening with my Prog mates after some time. This was a great topic show and there are no winners or losers here as long as they were released in 1975. While I’m not the biggest Queen, they also during this stage in their career had Prog inclinations to their music.

Having lived in MD for the first 40 years of my life, I heard CTS on the local rock radio station all the time. As a teenager, I took saxophone lessons from Tom McCormack, a member to the Crack Pack. A fun eclectic band. Thanks for always bringing them up.

@wolf19773 жыл бұрын
Personally I wouldn't put Teaser in the prog/fusion bucket (to me it's pretty much straight rock, the only fusion-y tune to me is "Homeward Strut" which is great fusion but only one song). I do have Mouzon's Mind Transplant on my list which is right up there with Cobham's Spectrum for Bolin fusion guitar genius. BTW Bolin's cover of Jan Hammer's "Sister Andrea" (2 years before Mahavishnu recorded it) & his live "Crazed Fandango" & "You Know, You Know" are also right up there in showcasing his fusion chops

Great show guys!! When talking about Kansas, and when Pete asked "I wondered what people thought when they saw Kansas in concert back in 1975. I can say exactly what I thought when I saw them in 1974 at Massey Hall in Toronto. The gig was supposed to be Queen opening for Mott the Hoople, which I was super pumped up for. Driving to the concert the big FM station in Toronto called Chum FM were talking about the concert and announced that Queen had cancelled because May had become very sick (hepititis). So waiting for the concert to start they announce that Queen will not be playing please welcome new upcoming band Kansas who's debut was release that same month May 1974. When I first saw the band I was kind of shocked that they replaced Queen with a band with a cowboy name and looked liked farmers or cowboys from Kansas. To say I was pissed is a understatement, and did not care for their music at all, and still do not listen to them. Sorry guys. But back in those days with all the glam influence going on in the music world and being very into Bowie, T-Rex, Mott the Hoople, Queen etc, having to sit through an opening act of a band looking like farmers and playing boogie woogie music mixed up with some odd time changes etc when it was supposed to be Queen, was a big downer.
@chuckazeee3 жыл бұрын
I can understand your disappointment and your honesty, Especially if you were a fan of Glam Rock and not of Progressive Rock. I know a lot of people personally that saw Kansas with Styx and Mahogany Rush open up for Queen and the judgement at first was the same as yours until they heard them play. Kansas was a great live band and often put on great shows as an opening act.

Ditto Blade Runner feels it has re-utilised music in its score. Vangelis using his music for a different purpose and audiences. Tangerine Dream were also prone to do this e.g. Movie score Thief’s Igneous is just Force Majeure’s Thru Metamorphic Rock. So Long Ago, So Clear has always been an absolute gem, one of Jon Anderson’s best vocals, so very pure and clear! There was a fantastic issued compilation that I had on cassette in the 70’s that had Albedo 0.39, Pulstar, To The Unknown Man (from Spiral) and others and finished with So Long Ago, So Clear. It was perfect late night listening for me. Vangelis remasters rereleases are excellent.

Very cool tune, it's Schon cranking it up! To me this album was always the logical extension to Santana's Caravanserai & Borboletta. If you listen to the wah near the end it sounds to me like Jeff Beck's "Definitely Maybe" from Jeff Beck Group

Couple have mentioned Weather Report's TALE SPINNIN'. Last week, I picked up Curt Bianchi's book, Elegant People: A History Of The Band Weather Report. I happen to be in the Chapter about Tale Spinnin'. So far, so good. Worth a read & a SoT Review! ;-O

For many years I avoided Kansas like the plague as I had a workmate that played Dust In The Wind continually and I thought they were commercial puff-rock. Then I heard Pete rave about them which I thought was weird. Then I tried them out and they are great (aside from Dust In The Wind & Carry On Wayward Son)

In the day, I had terrible Spring-time allergies. I hadda a couple of jackass co-workers that played "Dust"... all the damn time. Just to irritate me. :-)

this is a difficult one with so much good stuff 5. Kansas: Masque - I prefer this over Song For America, just great stuff all around with some more catchy stuff, some harder rocking stuff and some more progressive stuff 4. Crack The Sky: s/t - Great debut album by a great band, not a lot of long songs, but instead an incredible display of creativity in the songwriting 3. Birth Control: Plastic People - this is where BC get more jazzy, overall a great and really weird album 2. Rush: Fly By Night - one of my favorite Rush albums, the first one with neil, a bit more hard rocking than later efforts, but progressive nontheless 1. Nektar: Recycled - for me the best thing they ever did - while the A side is arbitrarily cut into short songs, it's really one massive suite and the B side is no slouch either

I went to see Bad Company at MSG, Run with the pack tour, and Kansas opened on their Masque tour. Kansas blew them away.

Four of them are pretty easy picks for myself: Fish Out of Water Voyage of the Acolyte No Mystery Free Hand After that, it's a tossup between so many great records (at least this wasn't '74, which would've been even more difficult): Raindance Bundles Minstrel in the Gallery Godbluff One Size Fits All Wish You Were Here Blow by Blow Visions of the Emerald Beyond Tale Spinnin' Fish Rising The Snow Goose

My list is long after the top 5. But from my albums of the year list, the following 5 are my top 5: 1) Kansas, Song for America 2) Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here 3) Pavlov's Dog, Pampered Menial (Yes, I call this album a prog rock album) 4) Mike Oldfield, Ommadawn 5) Earth and Fire, To the World of the Future Runners up (mostly because I have not listened to the albums a lot) Rush, Caress of Steel ELO, Face the Music Manfred Mann's Earthband, Nightingales and Bombers Kansas, Masque Barclay James Harvest, Time Honoured Ghosts (progr rock to me) Steve Hackett, Voyage of an Acolyte Still to listen to, so hence not in my list: Gentle Giant, Free Hand Renaissance, Scheherazade and Other Stories Van der Graaf Generator, Godbluff Jethro Tull, Minstrels in the Gallery Kayak, Royal Bed Bouncer 10cc, The Original Soundtrack (could be more Art Rock)
